  1. Terrible Video

The TX1 looks like a great photo/video camera and it is if you’ll always be shooting in optimal conditions.

As a pro photojournalist, I’ve been asked to carry this little gadget to get video for our website, I’ve had it with me for about a month now and am ready to throw it in the drawer of misspent dollars.

The low light capabilities are terrible and I’m not talking night vision. Indoor basketball games leave you with a poorly exposed, grainy shot and with its small size and box-y shape, not even the IS helps calm the jitters. And forget about actual night time street shots. When lit by streetlights, the video is near trash can material.

The other big problem is the huge artifact streaking vertically from even the slightest hint of sunlight bouncing off of anything reflective. Nothing like three or four giant white bars intersecting your shot.

I use several Canon 35mm digitals to shoot stills, so I’m not just bashing Canon here. I also did not pay for the TX1 so I don’t feel a need to endorse it and tell you what a wise purchase I just made.

The other detractors have been mentioned on all of the major review sites so I won’t get into those.

Under great lighting, which rarely happens in life, the HD and color is stunning. It’s just a long time in between those perfect days.

  2. Can't take pictures with a camera you don't have with you

    1) Its a Canon, with stabilization and 10x zoom and excellent image quality.

    2) It shoots HIGH DEFINITION VIDEO!

    3) It fits in your shirt pocket (please fasten a lanyard to your button to prevent pocket slide out disasters), so it is always there when opportunities arise.

    4) It doesn’t matter that the MJPEG format uses lots of memory — an SD card can be reused at least 100,000 times! Always make two copies of the data on any flash card before erasing your original, though.

    5) Unusual application: I enjoy calling people who are helping me by name, but I can’t always read their name tags. By taking their picture with their permission, I can find their name by zooming in on the name tag in playback.

  3. Unbeatable for an ultra-compact

The TX-1 offers a 10x _optical_ zoom, which you will not find on many other ultra-compact cameras. It also offers a superior movie mode (zoom functions during recording, stereo microphone, etc.) and a rechargeable battery. The compressed controls and the small viewfinder display are necessary compromises. One thing many people don’t realize is that for all its faults, M-JPEG the advantage of being a comparatively open format and thus works with many more processing programs than a “better” but more proprietary encoding would. For an always-carry camera, it cannot be beat.

I’ve seen some negative editorial reviews from places like dpreview.com, who don’t know the target market for this camera. Well, I think it’s me and people like me who otherwise wouldn’t take photos or movies at all because we can’t be bothered with something bulky and fiddly that we can’t be bothered to drag with us no matter how perfect the picture.

Many of us just want a great little camera that takes movies that look fab on their widescreen camera. Voila, here it is

  5. Highly Engineered & Elegantly Designed Device !

I just purchased this hybrid digital still/video camera today and I’m submitting a preliminary review with my first impressions. I will submit a full user review after three more days of testing.

My first impressions of this camera are how amazingly small it is ! The photographs shown in the review here and on other web sites in no way accurately portrays actual size.

I have shot my first SD and LP setting 16 X 9 720 @ 30p HD video ! It looked incredibly sharp in the little swing out viewfinder ! This viewfinder, although tiny, is in no way fuzzy or lacking in brightness or resolution ! When in 16 x 9 720 HD mode, you see bars on the top and bottom (The viewfinder is clearly in 4:3 aspect ratio.)

I set the audio to manual easily. It has a PPM meter bar display which accurately tells you where you’re at with the audio. I will now dump my HD video into my Avid editing system and evaluate LP hd video setting.

    Later folks !

  6. Real cool camera!

I bought the camera two days ago and quite love it. But I have 3 gripes (so far):

    1. I got only about 5 minutes or so of video shooting 640 x 480 on a 1 gig SD card.

    2. Battery life ain’t great.

    3. Adobe Premier 2.0 imports the clips but hangs with a ‘insufficient memory’ message. (Had to use QT to reconvert the clips)

  8. Great overall camera

I really like mine, but it is, as they say, somewhat difficult to physically handle. It just takes getting used to. The video quality is well worth the price, but if file size/physical size/cost is too much of an issue, check out the incredible Casio EX-V7. The wide-vga movies from that camera are much smaller and actually just as good looking. The photos aren’t as crisp as Canons, though.

  9. 99% Perfect

I am very satisfied with the product.

    However, 1% less…..

Still or Video images in the dark cause noticiable noises…. This is quite bothersome sometimes.

Everything I wanted: simple to use, lots of features, great movies and photos. I have stopped using my new Sony HHD handycam.

Canons software is a breeze on both Macs and PCs, not like Sony’s software.
