I bought my casio Exilim S500 early in 2006 and just the other day (April 2008) while I was taking photos, the lens got stuck open and wouldn’t retract. I can’t even power on/off now… I get an error type sound! By reading the other reviews, I think I am going to skip the step where I waste my time sending it back to the service center OR trouble shooting where it went wrong and how can I get it fixed. A new camera is probably cheaper @ this point.

Waste of money. It only worked for 4 months before the lense was stuck and the camera wouldn’t go on or off!!!

    DO NOT RECOMMEND!!!!!

I have had this camera for two or three years now I believe. I bought it when they first came out. It takes beautiful pictures, many of which I have placed on my website. The camera has never acted up or given me any problems. I have only good things to say about it. Seems like most of the people writing reviews have had problems. I have taken hundreds of pictures and had absolutely no problems. It has surpassed its warranty long ago and still works like a charm.

I bought my camera Feb. 2006 and was learning how to use it and enjoying it until the lens got stuck in the out position. I finally got it to work by removing the battery and reinstalling it. Abter 1 month of working, it quit! I paid $40 for an offical casio battery and after recharging for 2 days, the lens is still stuck out and the camera does not work. I am going to call the company and research other cameras. This was an expensive lesson about casio cameras.

Extremely faulty lens…after much frustration with the lens getting ’stuck’ it eventually came off completely and is now, obviously, utterly useless! not recommended.

This has been a great little camera, up until about the 14th month. Of course, the warranty is only 12 months. Figures! One day I went to turn the camera on, the lens came out about 1/8″ and the whole camera simply locked up. Tried another battery, and still nothing. Boy, why can’t Casio build their cameras like they build their wrist watches? Hmm…perhaps we should all learn and become familiar with the term “engineered obsolescence”!

Bought the S-500 for my wife on 12/22/05 at Costco (less than a week on so-called warranty). She’s been very pleased with the camera until yesterday when she pulled it from her purse with the lens extended and stuck. Powering-on results in vibration and sound of grinding gears!

Like others I’m unable to reach Casio service by phone, but learn online that I can send camera to a California service center and then get an estimate for repair cost. Having read other’s comments I suspect I’m about to purchase another camera – definately NOT a Casio!

I bought the camera 12 months ago at Circuit City. I was taking pictures and suddendly it froze. I went back to the store; they told me that it happens often to this model. Too expensive for just one year’s use.

I paid $349 for this camera at Sharper Image. No case and no memory card. Less than two months later I dropped it on my carpeted floor from about three feet and cracked the LCD from side to side. I have dropped eggs that haven’t broke from that distance. Casio would not give me a quote over the phone to how much or how long to fix. A third party quote was $150. I can get a new one with more megapixels for $199. Add the original purchase price and boy did I make a mistake. I miss using this camera but would never make the same mistake twice on something with no durability.

  10. Lens ring comes off easily

I got mine in January and have been in love with it. The build quality seemed excellent. But now the lens ring has come off just as the other reviewers describe, clearly a major design flaw. I cannot figure out how to get it to snap completely back on. I havn’t been able to reach Casio support, but reading about other folks’ experiences does not make me optimistic. It’s really a shame; it does not seem like a hard problem to fix with the right tools, and then Casio could keep me as a customer.

  11. Lens ring broken

I hope this gets to Casio’s attention. There is a serious defect on the Exilim S500 lens. We’ve just been using this camera for 6 months and last night when we were using it, the LCD suddenly went blank and the LCD did not retract back. We brought it to the service centre, and told us that it’s not covered by warranty and said it would cost us A$400 for repair! We could just buy a new one for that price :( It’s such a disappointment, specially that we’ve loved this camera. Now we know better!

  12. Broken and warranty not honored

We’ve had this camera for 6 months. We loved it. Then the ring around the lens popped off after simply turning it on; it could not be reattached. The machinery inside was exposed. Casio took it back since it was under warranty, but, after we sent it to them, we were told that the lens ring was not covered. Even with their warranty in hand that stated everything (excluding the battery and power cord I believe) is covered, Casio insisted we pay nearly $200. In addition, we have been waiting 2 months to get the camera back (we still don’t have it). We’re so very frustrated. I would pursue them legally if I could justify the expense and effort. We are using the only alternative left to us of warning people about Casio’s actions.

i’d like to bring this to every buyers attention.

the LCD screen of my ex-s500 went blank after a little more than 1 month’s use. the camera is in perfect condition. there is no scratch or anything on the screen, it just went blank.

i sent it to the california service center, and i was told yesterday that i have to pay for $135 to get the LCD fixed, because the LCD is not covered by the warranty.

i went back and read the warranty carefully, no where does it say anything about LCD. i am wondering what else does the warranty not cover, or what does it cover actually.
    jack.

OS X, hopefully I can download this and watch the Mpeg4 movie out of it.
I like this camera, but not under the low light condition nor night shots….I guess I’ll use this mainly for day time or when the light source is good. Easy to carry around.

    Pros:
you will think you love it until you download photos/videos and discover you cannot play videos on a mac!

    Cons:
    videos are not mac-compatible.

    Full user opinion
I am so disappointed, to say the least. Here i was so psyched about my beautiful little camera, and thrilled i could finally take videos lasting as long as the memory did. I downloaded them and had no picture. I kept asking casio how to fix this and they kept sending me suggestions. finally i found a line in the manual in the website declaring that in fact one cannot play these videos on a mac, the format they use is not compatible. amazing none of these professional product reviewers warn anyone of that. now i’m stuck with a $400 camera that i can’t use for video. avoid it.
