Highs: Stylish design; easy-to-use GUI and menu; trackball works great; EDGE compatible

Lows: Bluetooth is not 2.0; bad camera; poor battery life

T-Mobile's new Sidekick 3 is here, and comes with EDGE compatibility, Bluetooth support and a music player. But is it worth the upgrade?

Summary

Both celebrities and consumers have indulged themselves in T-Mobile’s Sidekick. The personal communication device is perfect for keeping in touch with friends, as well as e-mail and web browsing. Although the Sidekick II was immensely popular, it was lacking some much-needed features such as Bluetooth and EDGE. With the introduction of T-Mobile’s Sidekick 3 in July, many of these problems and missing features will be addressed. The device offers plenty of features that are bound to keep users happy.

Features and Design

This new version of the Sidekick has obviously gotten a facelift. From the sleek black design and thinner width to the smaller buttons and trackball, users will feel like they’re on a more professional device, as opposed to a toy. Buttons are smaller and are easier to use, plus the trackball makes navigation quicker and easier.

The Danger-based OS the Sidekick 3 uses is not that different than the Sidekick II’s. It’s still easy to use and now features a music player application for playing MP3 files. Using the included headphones and USB cable, loading music onto your Sidekick 3 is as easy as dragging and dropping music files on the phone.

Those fed up with not being able to carry an extra battery will be ecstatic over the new removable battery. Removing the battery reveals an easy to reach SIM-card slot and mini-SD card slot. You don’t have to remove the battery to access the SD card though, which is a great design feature. Also, Bluetooth 1.2 is included for use with headsets. Although version 2.0 would have been better, most people will just be glad they can use a wireless headset with their Sidekick now.

Anyone who was hoping the 1.3 megapixel camera on the Sidekick 3 would be a vast improvement over its predecessor is in for disappointment. The camera is technically better than the Sidekick II’s, but the picture quality is still absolutely horrible and isn’t even very good for viewing on phone screens. The fact that Sharp has the nerve to say they included a 1.3 megapixel camera in this phone means that they either exaggerated the camera’s picture quality or they just made a horrible camera. Don’t plan on taking too many pictures with the Sidekick 3.

A decent screen is included and works great for your chatting, texting, and e-mailing. Viewing photos on it isn’t incredibly impressive, but it’s not terrible either. The keyboard included feels sturdy and is great for fast typing. It’s about the same as the Sidekick II’s and works better than any Blackberry out there. So don’t worry at all about sending long messages.

The price point may be a bit high for some, though, with the device costing $400 outright or $300 with contract upgrades.

Performance

When compared to the Sidekick II, this device has tons of improvements in all departments except the camera. Bluetooth alone is a selling point to get users to upgrade, as well as the included music player. Increased speed with the EDGE network is a nice feature that makes IMing and web browsing better, but it’s not the only device on the market with EDGE and web browsing. The Blackberry 8700 does it too and has better reception than the Sidekick 3, so those who don’t care about IM but need e-mail and browsing capability might want to stick with an 8700.

Keep in mind that this phone is targeted at a younger demographic. The inclusion of easy-to-use programs that feature IM, e-mail, texting, and web browsing are perfect for most teens/young adults who don’t want anything more than that. Just because it’s not running Windows Mobile isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Anyone who considers themselves a “power user,” however, would be better off with something like an MDA from T-Mobile or a Treo 700. That way you can run applications like SlingPlayer Mobile to keep you even more entertained on the go.

Conclusion

The Sidekick 3 is a great step up from the older Sidekick II. Users will enjoy the added features and the redesign alone is enough to consider selling your old Sidekick to buy a new one. Unfortunately, the camera is still horrible and the UI remains basically the same as the old one. People will also find themselves with a dead battery if they use it heavily throughout the day. Overall, though, the Sidekick 3 will definitely launch successfully and is worth the upgrade for most consumers.

Pros:

  • Stylish design
  • Easy-to-use UI
  • Trackball navigation
  • EDGE compatible

Cons:

  • Bluetooth isn’t 2.0
  • Camera is still horrible
  • Battery life isn’t long enough
Setup and Use

Unpacking the Sidekick 3 is nice and simple. Pop in the battery and start charging it. If you want, throw in the included mini-SD card so you can leave your iPod at home. Tunes sound great on the included headphones and there are dedicated volume buttons for easy adjustment. Using the music player is also designed to be extremely easy to use and has no lag when changing songs.

If you want to make a call, just select the “Phone” option and start dialing. Calls sound pretty decent on the phone and there is a virtual keypad for dialing without revealing the keyboard. Unfortunately, you’re still going to be getting Sidekick-based reception. Mediocre is the name of the game, so you’ll find yourself ducking in and out of rooms to produce a signal. Sharp really should have done more research and put more effort into producing a decent antenna to use, since the device is pretty much a brick without a signal.

The IM client is no longer limited to AOL Instant Messenger and now includes a Yahoo! and MSN login option. Using it is easy and is the same as the Sidekick II in almost every aspect. It’s a well-built client that doesn’t really need a ton of changes. It’s always nice to be able to keep in touch with friends and an IM client that supports multiple services is always welcome on a device like this.

E-mailing is simple and supports multiple accounts so you can get your Gmail and Hotmail all in one place without having to worry. E-mails tend to send and receive more quickly due to the EDGE capability of T-Mobile’s network. IMAP and POP are both supported, so any service should be easy to set up, unless you’re some kind of security freak.

Finally, browsing the web is always fun, so those wanting to do so should grab a Sidekick 3. It’s quick and easy to use with plenty of shortcuts built in for better navigation. However, because the Sidekick 3 includes a trackball, horizontal scrolling would have been possible and could have allowed webpages to be displayed without the need to be resized for the Sidekick’s screen. Still, this device does a decent job of letting users visit their favorite websites (although you still can’t login and use MySpace properly – sorry, to all you teenagers out there).

i think the sidekick3 is a alright phone it has nice buttons that light up a nice redish color, has a decent camera and it isnt very much different than a sidekickII but overall id say its more of a sidekickII and 1/2 more than a sidekickIII, but dont take my word for it!
  • chucky
i been using the sidekicks since the sideick I and i liked all of them. the main thing for me is WEB. i love the web. the email box is good and the IM is great to. camera is so so. wish they would have given it a better resolution.240 by 160 is junk. i dont talk much on the phone but eh phone isnt that good with the speaker. i dont use the MP3 at all or the calender. the danger network needs to be alot more reliable. to many outages and looses signal alot. the web is faster then both sk1 and sk2. battery is ok but i really need an extended battery with 6 to 8 hrs.i carry my charger every where i go and i charge i 2 to 3 times a day. over all i love the SK3 and im sticking with it as long as danger makes each one better. one thing i like about the web is dangers proxy server on the EDGE its fast and snapy.
  • Harley
I got my Sidekick 3 on July 10th, and man does this phone rock. It has everything you want. I just love the MP3 player. I ordered a 2 GB mini SD card for it, now it has replaced my iPod. Its like having your cell phone, camera, ipod, internet and organizer all in one. What more could you ask for?! But one thing I wish it had is video capture. That would have completed it. But overall this phone ranks a 10 with me.
  • b18
it not what i wanted but it's ok thought i mean the mp3 is the best feature on this phone but that is it the camara is ass i aint going to lie i dont like it the internet is faster T-moblie need's a better network seriously Verison has the best network im about to switch i could sell the side kick 3 on e-bay ill sell it cheap but my friend want it so i might not sell it any way lol
  • BIG ED
i got my sk3 about 3 day after it came out...but now i wish i would have waited, the roller ball gets stuck, the battery life is bunz, signals get lost, the speaker phone is garbage the camera is kool and the mp3 is kool(but the speaker kills it a lil) i wish we could have custimize the main menu and the battery...if u use the bluetooth the battery dies in like 2 hours...its crazy...i should have stuck with my razr
  • not for me
I hate how you cant bluetooth tones from other devices which forces you to buy from tmobiles over priced tones...how you cant put your own pic as the backround...how you cant send pics without attaching it to an email...how the picture quality sucks and how the speaker phones sucks!
  • becca
well i dont like the feature and how you have to attach the pic to an email! its tmobiles way of getting money so u have to buy internet... really suckish but overall its pretty cool
  • Jose R
and now i want to sidekick it out of a window!

the only good thing about this is the MP3 playback but everything else blows!

picture quality sucks! i keep getting sidekicked out of the Network most of the time... cant make calls... cant send text messages cant check Emails CANT DO SQUAT!
SK3 is total crap O la!!

i wish i could use some of my MP3's as ringtones but cant do that!!
i wish i could use my own pics as a background but cant do that either!!

    i' am sending it back!

    TOTAL WASTE OF MONEY!
  • s3xxii
what sucks about it is that u cant put no ringtones on it except tmobiles, but u can put ur own picture as ur screensaver if u wanna noe how email lilangel86123@yahoo.com
  • Sam H
just got my hands on a side kick to try for fun. its awsome but you cant get good service where i live and they dont offer it for verion wireless so i would have to pay exstra to talk to my family.
  • Christian
This phone is so addicting. I LOVE IT. everyone should get one!
  • hannah
i just got it yesterday and i am already in love with it!! it is SO awesome!! i would totally recommend it to people who like to text more than they do talk!! like me! it is so amazing, the only thing is, it is hard to download music on, the instructions in the manual are very difficult to understand.
  • Justin
I just got mine 2 days ago and its absolutely amazing! The mp3 is so easy to get songs on. You just plug it in, drag, and drop. The images look poor on the camera, but when u put them on the computer they look great. The websites are good and the battery life is good. Overall
its just an awesome phone. The only problem is the service, but that's with all tmobile phones.
  • Todd
I am a T-Mobile customer in the Dallas area. I have a Sidekick III and I believe there are flaws. I have sent in now 3 separate Sidekicks III's for replacement. All have had the same problem. People can never hear me very well. They claim that the volume is not problem, but mostly a "muffle" in my voice. I am constantly asked to repeat myself. About every 3rd sentence is synthesized or has a "robotic" sound on both ends. When I put my sim card in other phones I have non of these problems. I am curious if any other users are having these same issues with their SK3.
  • SK3=Crap
The Sidekick 3 is a piece of junk and rarely works properly for more than a few hours. Email is completely unreliable and stops working for days at a time. Danger is very slow to make any updates or fixes. Text messaging has never been reliable since the product was released. Sometimes takes 3 days to receive texts or send them. The clarity and volume of voice on the phone is horrible. More often than not have a horrible echo on the phone and robotic sounding voice. I would NOT recommend this phone to anyone. It's a huge waste of time and money and has been a very frustrating experience. Danger has made it clear they don't care about updating it or making it work for current customers.
  • jessica
I just got this phone and absolutely love it. The only downfall that I have noticed is the camera, it kinda sucks. But otherwise, I'm addicted to it and lllllooooovvvvveeee it!! Definitely would recommend
  • chris
I have had my Sidekick for a month now. The text features are great, the web is so so (because half of the time I can't get a signal) and of course the camera sucks.
  • quyshiem
well im not a reg t-mob customer..but after having used my sis sk 3 i decided to get one...now its very swavy i can say..n in demand...but other thn te fact its a sk3 and the mp3 player..it isnt the best phone..n limitless features for a smartphone...i love my sk3 but it needs improvement on the cam...and it doesnt have video recording etc...but all in all its sub par
  • Pinkahbo0
I've had this phone for 3 months! It's been a nightmare to say the least. This phone is worse than its predecessor (the SideKick 2). The Bluetooth is not all that fabulous. That's the least of this phones problems; the reception is TERRIBLE! I loose service anywhere and everywhere. I can have full bars of reception and out of nowhere (without even moving) it drops to no reception (X) It takes an eternity to pick up service. I'll be on AIM or on the web and it'll loose service for no reason. To top that off, I get no reception in the middle of Manhattan! DO NOT BUY THIS PHONE!! It's JUNK! I'm buying a different phone this week
  • JC
Yeah, so I picked up the Sidekick after getting bored with my Sprint A-900 Blade. I thought the blade spoiled me with it's 1.3MP camera however it seems all of us have the same gripe about the camera fuctionability. Sharp never really did make great cameras or camcorders outside of the (like the Sidekick)original at the time Viewcam.. even that was subpar. I cannot say I dislike the SK3. It took some getting used to & once I sat down for a second & figured out how to hack the themes options I was good (now when I shut it it says "I got a jar of dirt" jack sparrow... The only other gripe I have is that some sites claim to work with T-mobile however the Sidekick is not present on they're select phone option. Why is that ?
  • Ali
I think other people should try the sk3 because it woks very well, the only thing that I don't like is the camera it does not work very well!
  • Cliff
The phones pimpin, the signal is fine, easy to use its been goin well for me. I think its worth every penny.
  • George
The phone is tops. I would give it a 10 out of 10, but the camerac could of been better and there is no video recording. The phone could of been a bit better.
  • Janice Robillard
We have had the Sidekick 3 phone for 7 month and it does not take a charge. The plug inside the phone is loose and does not charge. Tech told me this is common because we push too hard when inserting the charger. I have been to the local T-mobile store and they put a fully charged battery in and behold it works! I sent phone in as instructed by the service people and now they tell me I have liquid damage!! The "liquid damage indicator is red" The problem has nothing to do with liquid damage. It is a faulty plug! My phone is in warranty and they will not replace my phone. The warranty is not even up. We have 5 months to go on our contract and no phone. Not happy!! T-mobile should stand behind ther warranty and not let the liquid indicator be their "GO, NO GO test! What kind policy techs do they employ? I want a job there.
  • Micheal
I have had a Sidekick 3 for 3 days now and already my trackball dosent work properly... The camera sucks and the the side strips could of been strongers
  • Autumn
Okay, I know how people don't like this phone, but how can you not! Ever since I bought the SK3 over 2 months ago, it has been my entire life! Anything I need to find out I can just look up on the internet, or just ask one of my friends on AIM.

I also understand that people are having problems with their phones not working, but the SK3 is very fragile, and if you do not put it in its case, or if it gets wet.... we'll then you just wasted $200.

Awesome phone and if your entire life revolves around the internet, then get this phone!
  • Kellie Orander
So I was all about the image of the Sidekick and what it could offer me. I am a loyal Verizon customer and decided to switch over to T-mobile for the sole purpose that I wanted the Sidekick. My main problem is that the phone loses service everywhere I go. I never had the service problem with Verizon, so maybe it is more than the phone. I would tell everyone to skip the phone and try something better. IT DOES NOT LIVE UP TO ITS HYPE.
  • Jose
So many people want the sidekick because it's a cool looking phone. Basically the sidekick 3 is not all that great. I bought one because I thought it was going to be the best phone ever. But I was wrong, for its actual price, its missing a lot of features everyday cell phones have. You would expect that this phone would be a quad-band phone, yet it's only a tri-band phone. It also is missing the video capture. It does not have an alarm. You cannot receive picture messages directly to the phone; you actually have to go to an online album. And also the camera works perfectly on broad daylight but it does not work at night. Flash on this camera is pointless. It does have an MP3, but you're not able to use the songs on the MP3 as ring tones. And lastly you cannot send ring tones or pictures via Bluetooth. So this phone is actually not that great. It does have a great design and the keyboard, but that's about it. So all in all I give this phone an 8, because even though this phone is missing some features, it's got a nice look to it and is good on web browsing and receiving data with EDGE.
  • Dre
I've had this phone now for about two weeks, and it sucks already. You lose service just about everywhere you go, the phone doesn't have basic features like an alarm, or a calculator those are two things that come in handy for me, the camera sucks at night as well as during the day light, it doesn't record any video, the speaker phone is not really that good either. I mean don't get me wrong I like t-mobile but this phone is NOT worth all the money that I paid for it. I'm truly disappointed.
  • Nicole
I've had my SideKick3 since May. It stopped working after only 4 months! It doesnt even turn on, all it does is, once the battery is put in, occasionally it will vibrate. Thats it. It really isnt worth the money you have to pay. They could have done a lot better with this phone. Like put an alarm on it, calculator, better camera, and just better features all together. There is no point to the bluetooth, you cant use it with anything.
  • Amanda
I've had my Sidekick 3 since May, also. This is now my second one with the same reoccurring problems. Horrible speaker, service dies out, track ball stops working, texts send late, it ignores calls...I suggest you do NOT get this phone!
  • Leon
We bought our son the phone as a present. After using it for a couple of months (still in the warranty) the back light does not work anymore. After talking with customer service for 45 minutes they asked us to look at the liquid indicators; this phone has 3. How many phones have that many? The two under the back plate are white .The one under the screen is discolored, therefore voids the warranty. Come on now why under the screen? After months of use of course there will be some condensation built up in that area. Not to mention we live in Las Vegas where the temp gets over 115 f in the summer. So keeping it in your pocket is out of the question. The service T-mobile provides is not the problem but the warranty program needs to be really revamped. I do not recommend anyone to buy the SIDEKICK 3.
  • Jackie
I got this phone for my birthday last December. By The time it was March things started not to work. Finally the Sidekick broke in September. At first I thought it was the battery, so I took my friend's sidekick battery and placed it into mine. Turns out it wasn't the battery it was the phone. Although if this phone does break on you and your entire phone numbers and such are in the phone, there is a website to get the numbers. Personally I loved the Sidekick 3, but I will never get one again. It has easy texting, messaging, etc. But some things about the sidekick are bad. If you don't have a warranty on the phone then you are screwed. My parents don't want me getting a sidekick again simply because it is a waste of money and isn't durable.
  • Chris
I live in Baltimore Maryland and I got this phone because of the features it has, for the first 3 weeks I had the phone I was in Seattle on business, and it worked great! however after I arrived home I have had more problems than I can mention, text locking up or not going through or coming in only after power cycle, phone calls not coming in, horrible reception .......I lost reception in downtown Baltimore and Washington DC, some of the best signal areas in the country!!! And no bars!!!!! To add to the problems, I have spent approximately 48 hours total on the phone with customer service, and they know nothing!!! They tell me to do the same things all the time and act snippy when I tell them I did that with the last tech, they are horrible. Do yourself a favor and do not sink you money into this problem child! And for that matter stay away from T-Mobile, I got a Samsung blast for another line that stopped working 3 days after getting it!!!!
  • Amanda
I wanted the Sidekick 3 for a long while so I finally broke down and bought it! Not what it's cracked up to be at all! For one the applications are expensive and you have to buy the Time Traveler App. to actually have an alarm! Every phone these days has an alarm! Plus the alarm won't wake you up unless you have your phone on ringer, if you want to turn your phone on silent and have the alarm wake you up it won't, it will go off but nothing will play, so you MUST have your ringer turned on! What a bummer! Also the speakerphone is horrible, the ringtones I believe are too highly priced and you can't send direct pictured messages via text messages you have to send them to an email. What really bothers me the most is the text messaging!!! I used to have another phone that would send and receive my messages fine but now this phone half the people I send messages to don't get them until hours later! You can't put pictures as wallpaper without buying the application...So pretty much any standard feature on a normal phone must be bought on the Sidekick! I overall say this phone is not worth spending your money on the only good thing I believe there is about this phone is that it looks nice, other than that it really is not that great!
  • K. T.
I don't think the problem with the signal is because of the sidekick. Maybe it is just T-Mobile. Damage to the sidekick happens because it is not treated as it should be (a fragile object).
  • Sandra Benton
I got the SK3 from my husband as a Valentine's Day present. Number 1: it didn't come with the mini SD card as it had listed as an accessory in the book and when I called T-mobile, they only ran me through the ringer, said they'd send one, a month goes by, no card. Then the say they don't have any, I will have to buy one of the more expensive cards. Number 2:The first phone had issues with the digits (keys) not working or overworking where I'd press e and would end up with 20 of them and had a hard time texting, dialing, etc. I sent the phone back, received a replacement where I continued having issues. Finally, I ended up with the 3rd replacement phone and had it for a day, the trackball would not register when pressed down therefore making it impossible to play specific games and to use certain features. I held onto the phone for 2 months until it became a hassle and sent it back. When I received the box and opened it, they sent me back the same exact phone claiming water damage. Now, I have never got water onto, near or in the telephone so why would the sensor go off? I spoke with a representative who told me first that sitting in a sauna can do that, that you didn't have to get water into the phone at all. Well, that's odd cause I have never been in a sauna before! She also said that keeping it in it's carrying case can do that, so why then do they make the cases? She also told me that just holding the phone and sweating can cause the same issue. Therefore, normal use and care of the phone can set off the water sensors voiding out the warranty. How fair is that? Now, I have heard the Danger does not stand by their phones, I have also heard of a retention department, and when the rep told me to just buy a new phone, I almost flipped a lid! If I can't trust that they stand buy a guarantee and I can't trust that they wouldn't have jeapordized my warranty to leave me stuck with a faulty phone, why would I give them more money? All they said was they were sorry but they could do nothing for me. Just having the Sidekick and having had to go through 3 of them only makes me want to give up T-mobile altogether. It has been nothing but a pain and their Customer Service these days seems more concentrated on what money they can rake in, more than Customer Satisfaction. I pay $250 a month on my plan with downloads, monthly fees, etc. I'd think they would do something more to help but I guess they'd rather lose an 8 year customer who spends a crapload every year. Hmmmmmmm? I may not be back here at all.......nice place to vent though!
  • Magan
I bought the sidekick 2 a few years ago and couldn't wait to get the new sidekick 3. I had the phone for 3 months and it started making a high pitch squeal whenever I plugged it in to charge. It also would take hours to send text messages. A month later when receiving phone calls my ring tone would play like a broken record. I have another friend with the Sidekick LD and he has the same problems. I spent about 8 hours on the phone with customer care trying to get a new sidekick 3 and when they finally sent me a new one, it didn't work! I would advise saving your money and going with someone other than T-mobile.
  • John
When I first got the sidekick, it wasn't so bad. The "G" would take a minute or two to reconnect when I just walk out of the train station. In about a month later, it started to take an even longer time to reconnect and then out of nowhere I would lose the "G" in my own home! I don' think its T-Mobile fault, it's just the sidekick 3 most likely wasn't fully tested out for the problems (that's why sidekick id, and LX had just recently came out). My sidekick still doesn't work after a year now. I highly regret buying this phone. If I could make the score any lower, I would.
  • Tina
I've had my sidekick3 for about 2 years now and I'm totally satisfied with it. It has decent connectivity and signaling. Great for texting, good mp3 player and speakers, and the applications are really cool too. I've noticed now though that the IM's are getting a bit slow. I wouldn't blame the lack of signal on the phone itself though; its t-mobiles fault. They're just not that great of a phone company in general. If it weren't for the sidekick3 I would've stayed with Verizon. :)
  • Jeffrey
I have just recently got the Sidekick3 and I decided to get this one over the LX and Slide because it seemed to fit me the best. The Slide was too crammed and the LX seemed to look like an older version besides the bigger screen. The web browsing on Sidekick3 is decent. I haven't had any problems with reconnecting. I think the people that are having problems with that have to do with the service signal not the phone. The MP3 is amazing. The messaging is just so fun to do and I think this is the best Sidekick out and I am totally 100% satisfied and recommended this phone to recent and new Sidekick users!
  • Brittney
I can't be without my sidekick 3. The only thing that I don't like about it is not being able to send pictures through text (LX does though). It has everything I need at my fingertips and helps me a lot with school (flashcard application, e-mails, etc).
  • Ms.B
I have had this phone since it first came out and it SUCKS!!! Waste of money!! Text messages are delayed for hrs or days and sometimes i dont get them at all!! calls drop regularly, emails are delayed for hrs! almost cost me my job!
  • Cris
This phone is fantastic. I like the D'WADE better even though they are the same, the only problem is that I unlocked this phone, and without a code with only 2 easy steps. So that means I can't use the web (because I don't have T-mobile)and I can't use downloading catalogs or anything, but that's not to bad. Thank you, but yes this phone is great.
  • 808state
I bought this phone last year and boy, what a mistake! I honestly do not like anything about this phone other than the keyboard. I would not recommend this phone to anyone. Also, the sidekick package you MUST buy to utilize all of it's accesories is a bunch of crap!
