Demanding gamers require high power, THX performance, and true surround sound. Could it be a dream come true? A THX certified 5.1 speaker system for under $150, you bet!

Summary

This is a strong recommend. If you are looking for an affordable set of surround speakers for your game system or computer consider this one. The list price is $200 but we looked around and saw it for as little as $120 with an average price of $140. The speakers are light enough to mount on the wall, out of the way. The sub woofer is large enough to cramp you a bit under the desk. The system has a nice, clean look to it with the option of using the supplied grill or without if you are the type that likes to see the actual speakers. Attention to detail includes the ability to rotate the speaker for the best listening angle. The sound is rich, full and unbelievably clear for such small speakers. THX does not hand out certifications lightly, and this set has earned it.

Overview:

Welcome to the 21st century, where the line between home theater and personal computer has blurred. Part of this trend is the ability to achieve home-theater type sound from your computer or gaming systems. If you are a person that wants the best possible sound at an affordable price, we think the Logitech Z-5300 might be what you are looking for. DVDs and many video games contain explosions, crashes and other intense sound effects. The Z-5300 will put you right in the middle of the action.

Basic Features:

Our first observation when receiving this unit for review was the size of the box. It’s bigger and heavier than most of the full computers we get to work with. Most of the weight is due to the subwoofer, which also acts as the central point of connection for the unit. The back of the sub woofer has jacks for the audio inputs from your computer or game system, a connection for the included remote control, five output jacks for the front, rear and center speakers and, of course, the power cord. One aspect that demonstrates the attention to quality here is the fact that the unit is THX certified. This certification ensures the best reproduction of sound possible.

The five satellite speakers are light but powerful. They are easy to mount on a wall and small enough to sit on your desk. If you do not have a discreet six channel audio source there is a matrix mode available that will emulate the rear, center and sub woofer. The wired remote control puts everything you need to customize your sound stage at your fingertips. The satellite speakers employ an aluminum phase plug driver. This permits a broad audio spectrum from a single speaker. The subwoofer is dual-chamber, which emits a rich, full bass and excellent low frequency sound. There are also included connectors for most popular game systems.

Connections:

Everything you need to set up the unit is provided in the package. You may need to replace some of the cables with longer ones depending on your particular room dimensions. In most cases the time it will take from breaking open the box to enjoying the speakers will be under thirty minutes, tops.

You can connect the audio inputs in one of three ways; two channels, four channels and six channels. Standardized color coded cables are provided so all you have to do is match the colors on the cables to the audio out jack of your computer and the input jacks of the Z-5300. Above the input jacks on the Z-5300 there is a slider switch that controls the input source type. In the two and four channel modes the unit will up-mix the audio to a matrixed six-channel sound.

The same easy standard color-coding is used for connecting the five speakers. At the top of the unit are the jacks for the two front, two rear and center speakers. Just run the cables, secure the connections and place the speakers in the manner that provides the most direct sound to your sitting position.

The last connection to make is the wired remote control. This palm sized unit controls the volume of all the speaker groups and adjust the matrix mode.

Just plug in the power cord and you are ready to go.

Remote Control:

One of the nicest features of this system is the remote control. There is a large dial that controls the volume as well as switches for controlling the audio specifications. Rather than having different volume knobs for each speaker group there is a switch that alternates between system, fader (rear), center and sub woofer. As you move this switch an LCD displays what set of speakers will be adjusted by the volume knob. There is a button to toggle between power on and standby modes.

On the remote control there is also a jack for headsets. When you plug in the headset jack the speakers are automatically muted. The last set of controls permits you to switch between stereo and matrixed audio modes.

Evaluation:

We were impressed by the quality of the sound stage created by these speakers. While not up to the typical speakers of a home theater system they are very close. We played a few audio intensive DVDs through the Z-5300; films like the Lord of the Rings, Saving Private Ryan and Star Wars. In each case the matrix up-mix was well done.

While there is nothing that can beat discreet six-channel audio, the program used to derive the rear, center and sub woofer here is excellent. There was a feeling of true surround sound. The subwoofer was placed in a natural position, under the desk. It reverberated, reinforced by the desk around it. I could literally feel the low frequencies. Most small speakers like this do well with the high frequencies although there is typically a tendency to break up a bit at the highest end of the spectrum. With the Z-5300, the highs are natural sounding and crisp. The all-important mid range sound was true and clear. The center speaker did very well reproducing the dialogue; there was no muddling of the voices. The rear speakers provided a very realistic ambient sound although it did seem at times closer to Prologic mono rear than true 5.1 audio.

Conclusions:

This is a strong recommend. If you are looking for an affordable set of surround speakers for your game system or computer consider this one. The list price is $200 but we looked around and saw it for as little as $120 with an average price of $140. The speakers are light enough to mount on the wall, out of the way. Great value in 5.1 speakers. Bass, and midrange are both solid and clear sounding. Plenty of power. They really add another dimension to gaming or dvd movie playback. Won't be disappointed!!
  • FirebladeZ
I love these speakers. Great for everything, more bass than any 1 person needs, and stylish to top it off
  • FirebladeZ
This set of speakers has everything you could ever need in a computer sound system as well as your Home Theater. You will fall in love with these speakers as soon as their out of the box.
  • OuT4BlOoD
These speakers kick ass. Dont get anything else.
  • takitus
i love these speakers! only wish they had optical/digital coax so i could run 5.1 from my audigy 1 platinum without a DAC. sound card only has front/rear analog out. speakers only have 3 analog ins.
  • Max
MY GOOD FREAKING LORD these speakers are nuts. The guy at the computer store nearby said that these bad boys were overpowering the stereo's accross the store! When I heard these things, NOTHING BUT AMAZING!!! A GREAT BUY FOR SUCH A GREAT PRICE!!!!
  • PP
tell you what, I am living in a high rised appartment, I can even hear the sound of my speaker even i get inside the left!!!

I get complaint from my flatmate and neighbour after I get this speaker twice in the first day I am using this babe. My neighbour said they can only hear those "PUMB PUMB PUMB" bass frequence next store.

It's definitely satisfied my high demand on audio system.

I am sure this babe is the best speaker system within this price range!!!

Crystal clear Mid and High ranger, and the bass is definitely more than what you need whether on a game or movie!!!

Go for it, don't think!!!!! I promise you will never feel regret about spending this money on speaker!!
  • tom
Great speakers, every review before this is dead on. I was looking for a good bass system and this delivers. I'm using a Sound Blaster Audigy-2 ZS board with them and it's great. I love to just fire the shotgun in Dues EX Invisible war or send in huge arny in Command & Conquer Generals just to feel the rumble of it all. Get 'em, you'll love them.

    Don't buy

you moust buy this speakers son the prise is veary low and the spekaers is god quality and the looks are lovely.
  • tom
Great speakers....only good for gaming(although they are meant for games)..Not good for music....not very loud. The bass is amazing. I only wish i could crank up the volume more.
  • Mike
Reasonable speakers considering the price. The bass is way too loud. The remote volume control does not allow a good range for the bass. It should go from 0-100% but is seems like it goes from 80-300%. The bass can only go from "too loud" to "insane".
Only recommend for 16 year olds.
  • Lou
First off as soon as you get the box and you pull the speakers out you can already notice the quality is good. ONce you connect them to your computer you will be amazed. I was. The Mids and Highs are real good for 2.5" aluminum phase plug driver, and the bass from the 6.5" subwoofer is really low it hits real hard. You can throw alot at these speakers and they will just keep throwing sound back at you.
  • P The D
The speakers present a good value to the customer looking for a 5.1 stereo system to connect to their 5.1 channel sound card or a stereo channel sound card. As many others have said the midrange and highs of this system are surprisingly well defined for a single driver set up. I am going to go against the grain here and say that the subwoofer is a little disapointing. I suppose i can't say that. As far as multimedia systems for the computer go this subwoofer is in the tob 90%. Bu I am used to the Logitech Z-560 which is arguably the hardest hitting subwoofer in multimedia system history, which i will admit is short. Having said that the sub is not only less powerful than the Z-560's sub but the very low bass at loud volumes is not their either. For a 6" driver it doesn't do half bad, but at louder volumes, and even meddium levels the sub sounds like it is blowing air and not creating vibration. The port is so huge and the driver so small that all you hear when you crank 50 Cent's - In Da Club is air moving. Proper positioning of the sub helps, but don't expect this to perform like a long throw 8" like the Z-560s or the Z-680s. Besides my being used to insanely good subwoofers this system has no fault. For most people it will be fine, but those that are looking for the top of the line are going to go to the Z-680s. At its current price of $150 shipped online it is a significant deal for those looking for a very good system that will get them 85% of what the best will get but at about half the price. The one thing that makes this system vastly superior to its 4.1 channel Z-560 predisessor, is that it is much more reliable. The market is flooded with refurbished Z-560s right now because they all brook. I would know folks, I bought two and they both died on me. I have had no such problem with the Z-5300s and have had them for about four months.
  • Xenon
That's how I describe these speakers... They TOTALLY blow away my old Creative Inspire 5300's.
A difference between night and day. With a price of $140-$200@ 280Watts of TRUE total power, and a THX certification, you can be rest assured that these speakers are by no means "Tin cans on a string." These speakers sound so great; I am, to this day still amazed by them. I have had them for almost 6 months. Music, Movies, Games no matter what you put these speakers through they deliver. I have these speakers hooked up to a Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS Gamer, that is a great sound card, and any of the Audigy 2 ZS series of sound cards are recommended for use with these speakers. Logitech, I salute you for the z5300's. Thank you for such an AWE inspiring product. For those of you reading this review I have this to say... What are you waiting for? Get these speakers now! You won’t regret it!
  • Damo
There speakers are freekin awsome. great bass response, crisp highs and clear accurate mids. I Would Reccomend These Bad Boys to anyone. well except to elderly as they would most proberly stop their pacemakers. well if you buy these your neighbours are gonna hate you, unless you are extreemly lucky and have cool neighbours.
  • Patrick
I won't lie, this speaker system is not the clearest, richest sounding one on the market, but it delivers powerful, heartpounding bass on demand! The satellites are very good too, you won't get any louder in the sub $200 range!
  • HOT ROD
i got these at a local pawn for 50.00 for a set to use on my audigy. my 2.1 setup was lacking, and now i realize how crappy my old ones were. i have bose speakers as well, and these actually sound very close. only some people could tell. as for adjustability, they are great with the audigy 2 card. do not use near a graveyard, as to not wake the dead. worth the $ even at full price!! i'm 34 and hate dead white noise. these have none to mention of. games really sound better, as well as music. the sub can be toned down, or made to aggravate the neighbors, and shake stuff.
  • Haha
These speakers are amazing. If your budget is about 200, do not buy anything else. Get this one. You won't regret it.
  • Ryoma_Kun
    Uhm... How should I begin??
    GREAT SPEAKER SET
    GREAT FULL POWERFULL BASSssss...
Most people would go for the 680's but when i compared it at the the there was only a slight difference in sound. The quality is the same but the 680's only go a little bit louder. 100 Watt SUB is patented dual chamber subwoofer it sounds like 200 Watt because of the dual chamber . Between the subs from z-5300 and z-560 i found the one from z-5300 better you hear lower sounds and it sounds nicer. The Sattelites are great disigned. They are all a guy could wish for in sound quality.

    Conclusion :

Go buy them before it's too late :D

If you go through all the reviews, it should sum up the pros and cons of this product. Overall, I am very much satisfied, if not delighted! But I was little dissappointed whne I did not see this listed in Microsoft Windows XP Plus' feature of speake enhancement profile- http://www.microsoft.com/Windows/plus/windowsxp...
Anyone has set it up on any other manufacturer's profile to get the good result?
  • Tigamilla
These babies totally sound amazing, before these I had a set of Creative P580s. They seem positively obsolete now.The sound is rich and crystal clear, the bass is whatever you want it to be, (for those of you that think its too bassy or not bassy enough - fiddling around with your soundcard equalizer has done it for me...) I run these through a creative Audigy 2 soundcard - basically its THX meets THX.DVDs games, music all sound amazing. Im waiting for my neighbours to go out for a day so can fully exploit the ridiculous power!! EXCELLENT!!
  • Carvallo
  • Thomas
The best speakers for gamers that are looking for great sound with extreme (read 'extreme') bass, but don't wanna pay much for it.
  • racecar
These are your typical overenergetic teen's dream. It took turning the sub volume ALL the way down, equalizing another 6-8 db out of the 80 Hz area, and a sock stuffed in the port to tame that sub! I'm working on about 20 hours of run-in now and they are getting better all the time. Lots of oomph. You'll be deaf before they distort. And once the bass monster is tamed they become a very balanced system.
  • mike1
I've had mines for a year now and its still pounding i'm thinking of getting a second one. Really good speakers i'm going to get another one and have both running at the same time.
  • bl1uedrag0
as the previous reviews have stated, this system is amazing. the bass is unmatched in this price range, and in my opion, even up to 350$ range. although the option to turn down the bass is almost non-existant, i dont see this as a problem. nothing rocks better for the price, and i am very impressed.
  • Diablo
really good speakers for the price. You wont expect to get bose at this price.A good bargain. I would recommend it. But if u have the big bucks I would say go for BOSE.
  • Lucky
I had previous Inspire 5200 5.1 speakers & these Z-5300e sure can peak at max 560 watts while playing "THE MATRIX" these bad boys can bass, rumble of my floor, walls, If it's in the Speakers it's in the Speakers Logitech THX...
  • Reo
Have had them for around two months now, and they are great. Preformed wayy better than expected, and creates an acurate sound field in 5.. Playing HalfLife2, i can hear exactly where my oponents are, and the sound is crystal clear.

Base is great, i don't see the problem with base adjustment.... I havn't had to adjust it outside the controllers range ever, and generally the middle point sounds good for most things. If you DO want to tweak it more, theres plenty of programs out there that can tweak it for you for free.

This is an excellent speaker system, and i HIGHLY reconmend. Realistically, for PC, and Home Theatre applications, you don't need more wattage than this can do, unless you're looking to deafen yourself. Generally i have it on setting 2-3/7, 4 when watching movies.
  • brian
extremely crisp strong sound, sub is incredible, all controls are on the remote, im more than ecstatic that i got these speakers for 100 bucks.
  • speakerman
pretty bangin system for 280 watts seems like 500

I'm just writing to say that you can actually enlarge the speaker cables by adapting a normal audio cable to them. You just have to buy a coded cable (red & white), separate them, plug it into the cable of the speaker with an adapter you can get in any audio store, and the other side to the subwoofer.
  • colin o'brien
I got my set off ebay for $100 and they are worth every penny. I have seen other speaker sets that are worth $300/$400 and my speakers are just as good if not better. If you get the chance to buy them DO IT!!!
  • Ian
I've had these speakers for nearly 4 years.

All I can say is, Wow.

I refuse to listen to anybody else's sound systems any longer - These things blow everything I've ever encountered out of the water.

I've only just now discovered the uses of the "Matrix" mode, and I'm very impressed.

A++ to Logitech, and I even paid full price when these were new!
  • Max
Absolutly amazing...bass is extremely clean and deep speakers sound wonderful! Deffinatly deserve the THX certificate.
  • Nahum
After reading reviews in this and other websites, I finally made up my mind to buy this speaker system to replace my old one, the one that I assembled my self. I bought it for $185.

After listening to it, I fill very disappointed. The sound quality is somewhere in the medium range. It is loud however, but I'm not looking for loud system.

The mids were lacking some frequencies, while over in other frequency. In other word it's not natural enough for my ears.

The highs have too much hisss.

My old system can produce exellent highs, but poor on mids and low.

The bass is way too much. I realy don't like bassy music.

The system is only good for watching movies and playing games, not for music listening.

Someone mentioned that this system sounds like Bose. If Bose sounds like this, I will never buy Bose.

My $25 phillips earphone sounds alot better, and $25 for this earphone fills inexpensive. $185 for this 5.1 system fills very expensive.
  • Conquer451
Its not a true 5.1... Not matter how I tweak with it and set things up, the different channels cross over each other. I am a big fan of Logitech products but I wouldn't repurchase these however. Its great if you don't have a 5.1 source and want "fake" it.
  • Goodfellow
I had this sound system about 2 or 3 years ago, and it worked amazing for me! I had it with a Creative Audigy 2 and 5.1 worked excelent! the matrix mode was kinda confusing at first because I didnt know what it was for but it soon made me clear I didnt need it :) I got a Z-5450 now and I have to say.. Wouldnt go back to the Z-5300. As I recall the Z-5300 could not go digital.. Thats one of the minor things about the system.. But for about 130 dollars.. You got a perfect sound system :)
  • Dave
I picked this setup up a few days ago at a great low price I could not turn down.

First thing I found was that I needed to add some RCA cord to connect the back speakers as they were a little too short.

The wall mount and turn bases on the speakers are great but I'm not using it that way right now as the desk works just fine on my setup.

Setup was as easy as routing the wires to the bass speaker, connecting the RCA contacts by matching the color, and connecting the control which is a similar setup to a monitor cable.

The sub woofer puts out a lot of bass and is something I chose to turn down for my type music but it also holds the amp and has a massive cooling fin setup on the back which I really like as I can run the system for days without any problems of overheating

Overall sound with a 5.1 setup like mine sounds great to my ear and I do a lot of audio recording so now I can record in 5.1 for some more effect.

I give this a 9 out of 10 only because the rear speaker cords are not long enough IMO.
  • Luke
The amount of bass is way too much. Obnoxious thumping drowns out the mid and high range. These speakers might be good for gaming, but very annoying for music.
  • Brent
This speaker set is fantastic value , If your like myself and use your PC as a jukebox , then you will be McLoven this system!

I have to disagree with over-powering bass , Control remote lets you adjust levels accordingly. As well as a bridged output "matrix" mode , for a basic MP3 stereo input with all 5 speakers.

I knew if it had THX , then it would sound good , But for the price compared to a Bose for example , You cannot go wrong with this one.
  • Nick
I use this system along with my computer for a lot of music listening use, and this setup is amazing. Everything is crisp and clean from high end to low end without much too any distortion, and when I want it to be, it can get LOUD very quickly. Bought it at Circuit City summer 07 for 150, which is 50 off the list price, and haven't looked back since. More power (280 watt, 560 RMS total) and better sound than other comparable and cheaper 5.1 and 7.1 systems. I can honestly say this system reproduces sound as well as, if not better than, most home theater systems one can put together piece by piece (not to mention it's far cheaper than spending the money required to assemble a complete home theater system from scratch). I use the Z5300 in tandem with the Creative Audigy 2 notebook external sound card to really boost the sonic experience and I couldn't be happier. If you can find these now, I would absolutely recommend them. After all, how many other people do you know that own a computer speaker system (or any audio system, for that matter) which is THX certified? If you're like me, you're the only one, and that is something you can be proud of, as the THX tag isn't something to be lightly regarded when it comes to sound reproduction. Bottom line: Buy these speakers. You won't be disappointed.
  • David
BEST SPEAKERS. Bought it about 6-7 months ago and it delivered the sound, the feel, and the bass! I don't know what else to say. I usually like to test the speakers by going all out. Left speaker went out one day and I called up Logitech customer service. Man were they awesome! They told me that they'll be sending me brand new z5300 speakers at no cost and don't have to return the old ones. Couple of days later, old speakers started to work fine and did a mean test again. Worked great. So.... old speakers still have. New speakers on its way! For free ^_^ that's all.
  • Matt
I have had my 5300 for 4 years now (or something like that) and I loved the sound from the start. I think the adjustments are handy - I like being able to adjust the sub separately (which I can't do on my $600 set).

Only problem I've run into is within the electronics. First, it would make a "pop" every time I adjusted the volume (every click on the dial would pop through the speakers). Now, it's worsened to the point where I have very little volume at all through the system. Pretty frustrating, but they served me well for a few years.

Having a difficult time finding support/replacement parts for this.
  • David
Does anyone know if you can hook these up to a laptop or Digital Drum set? I have a Roland TD-6 drum set and it seems as if the power would be plenty. Thanks! On my desktop they are by far the best speakers I have ever had!
  • garrett
I think this is the best so far but Logitech has discontinued it. So, ya, but it's a great set. The sound is incredible. Yes, it can be hooked up to any of those units through headphone jack. Does anyone know where to get replacement satellites for it? Email me im18andhopeless@hotmail.com
  • Franklin
I got these several years ago and FINALLY I'm breaking down and writing a review on them. I must say for the price ($150) they are a lot better than I ever expected. Living in a rural town in Minnesota, I often open the windows so we can hear music for our parties. These bad boys do MORE than enough to satisfy the average consumer. From watching a movie or playing PS3 or a Saturday afternoon of the iTunes jammin.. These are MORE than adequate. My wife OFTEN tells me to turn down the bass. When they made these.. they made them right! I haven't heard the Z-5500 series yet. I can only imagine them being a tad bit better. And I never hear distortion UNLESS it's in the music itself. Overall.. easy set up. Easy mounting equals easy listening.. Logitech hit a homerun with these. I can't speak for others obviously. I'm 100% satisfied with these. I got my money's worth and a nice bonus!
  • paul
I've had them for a few years now. I bought the z-5300 new on sale for $98. I've never actually ran these thru a computer with 5.1 soundcard and frankly I really couldn't care less. I use them in the living room to watch TV, DVD plus VHS movies and listen to the occasional cd. I couldn't be happier with the theater-like sonic experience. I found that turning the sub setting on the remote down to 10 o'clock creates a very clean distortion free bass sound without sacrificing any low end hammer. Not hard to fathom why their THX certified. 4.5 out of 5 stars.
