I’ve used this device for a Good 3 months and have hardly had any disconnections, yet there are disconnections. I’ve found it’s range and reliability a must at a cheap $30.00. I’d suggest this to anyone who has a need for quick Wi-Fi and Strong support and security.

Get Disconnected - Two

February 13, 2008 @ 9:40 AM25pam2>
I have had the DI-624(c) in use for well over a year and a half, and just recently the unit drops my network connections – not my Internet connection, which is running through a Siemens DSL modem. It freaks me out because up until a few days ago I had absolutely no problems at all with my three-desktop, one wireless laptop network.

Got disconnected
By: Andrés
February 4, 2008 @ 12:01 PM32ppm2>
I’m using the DI-624+ of a parent. I got disconnected from internet between less than 5 minutes. I need to download a file with some program with resume capability if not I must begin from the principle of download. I cannot use MSN Messenger in any manner. I got disconnected too fast so I lose messages I get bored about repeating what I said.
This frustrating Wi-Fi router is a bad choice. I own a CNet one with a much better and superior quality. Faster and stable than this one. Really, the CNet one kicks this for much. And you know, CNet is not a super Wi-Fi quality professional company, instead it is a medium to good quality. I guessed that D-Link is a super quality professional one, but I was in mistake?

When in doubt, reboot........or just reboot for no reason
By: Dan Thompson
January 30, 2008 @ 11:13 AM24pam1>
From a Wi-Fi standpoint, this router has decent performance. Range is good, speed is good (although wireless ’speed’ is still an oxymoron). The rebooting thing, though….. Very annoying! Mine (and many others, judging from forum trolling) has its own mindset and ideas of when it needs to take a quick dive and resurface. Definitely a fault with the router, as I can see it happen. The lights go solid, all wired comps yell “Network Cable unplugged” then all goes dim for a reboot. Thankfully though, it only causes minimal impact, as it comes back up more quickly than any normal apps (Windows file copy, browser requests, POP and SMTP) time-out. I have actually had utorrent running with 150 concurrent connections, while it dropped, and utorrent didn’t even blink, just started re-establishing connections. If you just surf, email and download, or have a small home network and want decent wireless performance and range, it may do, depending on the severity of the seemingly common reboots. Gamers, PAY ATTENTION!!! This router is not for you. My DNF % on X-Box live is ridiculous!!! Third Period Boots from NHL08, “You have been signed out of/into Xbox live” popup. Incredibly long sign in times, etc. World of Warcraft seems to ignore the reboot completely, LOTRO does a horrible lockup every reboot (It feels like it’s going to recover, than BAM, server disco right when you’re believing’). LAN Gaming seems OK, but everyone gets the little freeze at the same time, so we usually just blame the router when anyone manages a headshot or good old’ fashioned knifing.
All in all, if you see one at a garage sale for under $10, and can live with it, just ask the guy how often it reboots and start haggling. If you game, beware!!!!!!! Gets a 2, because I’m a Gamer!!!!!

I have had nothing but problems with this router. It never achieved anywhere near the rated speed. Even when forcing the system to operate over short distances with strong signals at each end of the link, the router resets far too frequently. I will NOT buy another D-Link product because the company has NOT admitted to having these problems.

Power Cycles
By: James
January 15, 2008 @ 12:15 PM27ppm1>
After buying a 624 and then replacing it with another due to a power cycling issue (it would reboot every 10-15 seconds). I’ve found that the second router does in fact reboot also, only every 1-2 hours.
Do NOT buy this router, it has only caused horrendous problems to me and I would recommend purchasing a Linksys equivalent.

No more D-Link Products for me
By: J-M Vella
September 19, 2007 @ 12:16 PM45ppm9>
Out of the box my router never worked 100% correctly. It would not keep the correct date and time, some functions didn’t work as described. I was told to update the firmware, but when I did, the new firmware introduced new and worse problems, so I stayed with the old firmware and its problems for over a year. When I finally decided to go to the latest firmware, it was a disaster. It filled my inbox with logs of TWINGE Attacks. I contacted Comcast and was told by them that they have only had complaints of this problem from D-Link users. They tried to set up a conference call with D-Link, but it didn’t succeed. D-link was unable to deal with the problem and said they would replace the router. But the RMA department wouldn’t do it until more trouble shooting was attempted. The tech who was supposed to do it couldn’t deal with it and escalated to level 3. The Level 3 tech asked me to send some of the logs, which I did. I never received a response to that (sent 8/28/07). When I received no response, I sent an email asking why, but received no response to that.
Sept 18 I contacted D-Link again and was sent to a Level-2 person who then processed the paperwork to allow an RMA, and one was issued by the end of the day. When I read all the rules and procedures for the RMA I felt it was not worth the cost of postage to go any further. This is not a company I want to do business with. I’d rather go buy a new router from another company with better products and support.

I have used this router for one year and I conclude that it is very bad for me. With the default configuration it filters in wireless conecttions… I do not know why? It is very confused when you want to change configuration. We cannot get access to mailboxes in Hotmail. In Yahoo we cannot send medium messages. PBwiki and other wiki system does not work through this router.

Wonderful product! Bought it off Overstock two years ago and I haven’t had any problems with it. The only thing is when my devices were at the very edge of its range, and even then, the problems went away after an upgrade to Windows XP SP2. Firmware upgrades are available for this device, which I installed only because I’m religious about installing upgrades and not because of any problem with the device.

I used this router for a couple of years until someone hacked in some firewall rules which I could not delete. I reloaded the latest available firmware and it appears to reboot as often as every 30 seconds. Can’t get older software. Level 1 support is beneath contempt. Switched to Linksys.

December 15, 2006 @ 8:18 AM46pam12>
I will strongly suggest NOT TO BUY this product, dismal performance, unstabled, reboot on its own. this product has broken for D-Link reputation.
Call three times the technical Support, troubleshooting took for ever. and the technician was more confused that I was, in the of three agents end up with the same result, return the equipment for replacement.
Now I can see I am one of the many having the same issue. D-Link should recall all of this mishaps, if they still care about their reputation.

NEVER upgrade to firmware 2.75, as you will then be unable to configure the wireless portion of the router. 45 minutes with the help desk resulted in a recommendation to return the unit to the store. Firmare roll-back was NOT an option according to the help desk; however, after some internet research, I found it could be done (no thanks to D-Link). I have real reservations about the product and the lack of support.

One, I just tried setting up a DI-624 on an established DSL connected computer. There was not one piece of instructions along with the Router. The setup program, from D-Link said the router was not a D-Link router. I am now on the internet looking for a way to connect the router manually, as the software refuses to work with the supplied router. I would not buy another one, but then I did not buy this one. A customer bought it because it was cheap, but then he always buys cheap non working crap.

Had PS2 online gaming problems
By: Kim
January 5, 2006 @ 9:51 AM10pam1>
I’ve owned the DI-624 for about a year and would occasionally have to reset the router – that seems to be a common thread with this router. I just replaced the DI-624 router with a Linksys because it just wasn’t compatible with my kid’s PS2 for online gaming. Spent hours on the phone with Sony, D-link and Linksys trying to get them to work together, all for naught (you gotta love your kids to do that). Only when I bypassed the D-Link router and plugged the PS2 directly into the modem would it work. That narrowed down the problem. With a direct RJ-45 link to my new Linksys router I’m good to go.

I have flashed it many times and only get good performance at 54mbps and not the 108mbps as it continuously drops out at full speed. I would recommend anyone to look elsewhere as they have very poor communication/technical support.

I have tons of nightmare stories trying to use wireless Linksys products. I finally returned everything Linksys in favor of the DI-624. I have not looked back since. Everything worked right out of the box. At worst, I have to reset the router once a month. I love it so much I went out and bought 3 DI-524’s to use at a friends house, family members house and at work. All 3 ran flawlessy out of the box.
In addition to the routers, I am using 2 D-Link wireless cards in my laptops and 1 D-Link PCI card in my desktop–all work great.
I’ve enabled WEP and MAC Filtering on all with no setup problems.

"Luck of the Draw"
By: Robert M
May 15, 2005 @ 10:01 PM47ppm5>
I initially purchased this router a few months ago (Jan 2005) in my first attempt at a home wireless network. I initially had no problems getting the router setup initially. The wizard was very intuitive and all told it took me about 30 minutes to completely rewire and setup my home network with two PCs connecting to it. One wireless laptop in my bedroom and the other wired in the den downstairs.
The router worked for several days and then suddenly stopped. It would establish a connection with both the wired and wireless PCs but would not assign IP addresses. I was stumped and after 3 hours on the phone with DLink tech support they were too. Several resets and a few four letter words, the router was back up and performance seemed great. However, occasional sporadic episodes (once every 2 months) continue to plague it. A simple reset seems to solve this issue.
If one can ignore reliability issues and headaches of this router then, given the amount of features offered by this device it seems well worth the price. Oh yea, I only paid 20$ for it ;p

I purchased the DI-624 to replace my aging DI-614+. As all good techies I updated the firmware to the latest and greatest and setup the router. It was your typically great/simple D-Link setup. I was up and running in minutes and my TiVo picked up the DCHP settings right away (an issue I had with my DI-614+). I am a Network Analyst and I fully recommend this unit. I give the unit a 9 simply because these companies are shipping units out without the latest firmware updates. (Linksys, and Netgear are included on the naughty list.)

The setup wizard works like a charm for setting up a wired netword. Wireless networks are a tad tougher to setup but that’s because Windows XP is not yet the user friendly OS when it comes to networking. Of course, with the info provided on http://www.homenethelp.com and http://www.portforwarding.com you can easily resolve any issues and make this router the centre of your network. I have a network with a wired network pc and a wirelessly connected laptop and everything (including file sharing and printer sharing) works perfectly and with high transfer speeds also!

I to want to upgrade from a 11b to a 11b/g and having used Dlink bridges in the past wanted to go with a quality name. Well this has been haunting me since I purchased this not so wonderful device. When it works the functionality is great, but every 5~7 days I have to reboot the device. I was told by tech support that if the traffic from one wireless user is to great it will lock up the wireless portion of the router. Oh mind you this is after they had me hard boot and try all firmware versions. After 15 emails and 2 tech calls I am back at the starting point and dummy me listened to tech service and continued to work with it past the store return date. Now I have a great door stop and went back to my Speedstream 2624 11b and it works without a problem.
It is definatley not the seemly product I bought.

had old d-link wireless router and want to upgrade to match new laptops. Bought the 624 and the hi gain antenna after reading many reviews on all routers. It is a hit and miss on any manufacturer. Out of the box the router worked briefly. I experienced problems when I tried to change the settings. I called tech support and waited 7 minutes. The first guy I got did not speak english well. he ended up hanging up on me. I called back and waited 4 minutes. got a guy who spoke english with a slight accent. he was excellent. he new exactly what the problem was and the router worked better than I imagined. He had me reconfigure the router. Due to experience from the old d-link router, I unplug the router when not in use. They tend to over heat and not work. the old router uses a 5.0v power source, the 624 uses a 2.5v power source. unfortunately, my daughter pluged the wrong power source in and fried the 624. I got a new one and having notated the reconfiguring I did previously, I did not have to call tech support. The router works flawlessly. and with the additional VPN connectivity features, my work computer works flawlessly. One important notation, try to reconfigure the router before upgrading the firmware. If it works with out the firmware, do not upgrade. I can say I’ve been lucky, after reading the other reviewers

Stay away from the D link 624
By: Unhappy
November 2, 2004 @ 8:50 AM10pam11>
Notwithstanding all the research I did, donât believe the hype the D link 624 is a hunk of junk. We have a desktop, Xbox and a wireless laptop. With this thing, if the Xbox and desktop are on at the same time the Xbox seems to hog all the bandwidth and kick the desktop off the net are, however the wireless laptop is fine; incidentally the desktop and Xbox are both hardwired to the D link 624.
Well, you would say why would that be a problem as the Xbox is a pig when it comes to bandwidth online; however I had a D link 604, which is a hardwired router and experienced no such problems EVER! With the purchase of the wireless laptop and all the crappy advice from the so called experts, I assumed and thought the D link 624 would just be a smooth and seamless transition, to wireless networking WRONG!
Alert! for the Xbox users stick with firmware version 2.42 regardless of what the dolts at D link tell you, as version 2.50 will just kill any live Xbox play as it is an unstable piece of crap. The only redeeming quality is the wireless laptop works as long as my cordless phone does not ring as the single drops wherever you are in the house and yes the bay station is away from the router.
In short, I have resounded to myself to the fact that we canât use the desktop and Xbox at the sometime and pray that we donât get a call if someone using the laptop on line as its goodbye connection. Save your money and purchase two cans and a ball of string as you will get a better connection and less of a chance of lousing your single in midstream. Whatever you do stay away from the D link 624 as you will regret the day you purchased it.

I had updated the firmware to 2.50 and noticed dropped connections only on my notebook with the D-Link wireless PC card. After two calls to tech support they told me I must have a 2.4Ghz cordless phone in my house or close by…whatever. I have it working great now exept for whenever I try to enable any of the security measures I immediately lose connection to the network. I finally disabled Windows Wireless Config and opted to use the D-Link configurator and it hasn’t lost connection at all for at least four hours but I haven’t yet had a chance to check out securing my network. It seems much faster that my old DI 614+ but what a pain in the butt it was to get gong.

Installation is tricky. Microsoft zero configuration utility in WinXP is able to connect and has been stable. Dlink configuration utility is best left unused.

Worst ever

Works for about 3.5 minute intervals then disconnects. This product is the worst ever. Don’t waste your money. Replaced with a Linksys, now wireless network NEVER disconnects.

Worked great for me

I’ve got 3 PCs and a Mac wired into the router and have 7+ laptops and tablets connecting to the router (not at the same time thankfully) all the problems I’ve seen have been with the cards in the laptops, not the routers. Setup was great, the powerbooks connected fine. All these other folks seem to have problems, but I’ve got everything for a 166 Dell to a G4 Mac running through it and its never given me problems.

Doesn't work

My DI-624 just doesn’t do what it should. Works fine as a wired ethernet router but the wireless side is hopeless. Gives out weird IP numbers to my wireless laptop. The retailer spent 2 hours with it and can’t work out the problem. Cheap to buy but not cheap when it doesn’t work.

Not worth the hassle

Product appears good but when you need support it is a crying shame. Do not bother upgrading the firmware. It will break the router. No hard reset possible

Average Router/Features
By: TedB

After 2 hrs of set-up, I was able to use, once again the router portion-not wireless feature. Four calls to tech support made-the first three took longer than expected due to the tech’s not speaking english, and being eith er on a speaker phone or having the phone lines echo to India and back. On the fourth call, the person was friendly, spoke english, and walked me through the problems.
He said, If you are using Zone Alarm–this router will not work. You have to turn off Zone Alarm. There is no fix or support. Also, I have several PC’s and 2 MAC’s, Dlink does not support MAC’s. Remember the 192.168.x.x. site, there are so many user features, they were all triping over each other, and several had to be turned off. I do like the idea of being able to turn the antena off, when I’m not using the wireless feature, but I have to go in and turn in on/off for every use, if I want to maintain security. Speed is not at 108 Mbps- I saw average of 60/65.-Could be because the first several Tech’s told be to turn features on/off. One tech said to turn off something, and on the next call, I was told to change it back. I gave up trying to set up my VPN and other security ports. Thank GOD I have 30 days for a return–I just may be exercising this.

A poor performer
By: Luke

A very poor performer backed up by even poorer support, as long time user of Dlink products I am highly disappointed.
The DI-624 has all the features, but it can’t deliver them. It offers poor wireless performance in several tests and very poor range. The worst thing however is it’s stability. You only have to google DI-624 to find hundreds of discussions on the unstability of the DI-624, and the support from Dlink is even worse, who can’t even seem to release a decent firmware version.
I would recommend anyone considering this router/modem to reconsider.
