Dish ViP 622 is a POS
By: Ben Boatright
October 19, 2009 @ 2:14 PM17ppm10>
I am now on my third 622. The third one, which is about 6 weeks old, died last night. DO NOT BUY ONE. If yours hasn’t failed…just wait. I called last night and in my rant to tech support, he didn’t even bother making me go through the steps. They’re upgrading me to a 722k. Hopefully, the situation will be fixed by the tech tomorrow. Dish has a long reputation for poor software in their receivers and poor implementation of their ideas. If this last ditch effort fails, I’m switching to DirecTV for good.

622 problem seems to be an overheat problem - prop up the unit's feet
By: Duncan
September 28, 2009 @ 11:51 AM32pam9>
Ok folks. I got two 622s about 20 months ago. One sitting on top of a dresser has worked flawlessly. The other inside a stereo cabinet (think overheating) crapped out about 4 months ago. In that time Dish has sent me 3 replacements where they all have had problems. They were all refurbished units and all have had the same problem with the picture freezing, or the unit not responding, and having to do a reset to regain normal operation. I checked all the connections. I even changed out the switch. I still have a problem. The tell tale signs that the unit is about to crap out is that parts of the picture start freezing. Thinking that perhaps I have an overheating problem, I just propped the unit up on four 1 x 1 x 1 inch high blocks to let more air circulate under the unit. This seems to be working. I also called DISH and told them I want a NEW 622 unit (no more refurbs). I did ask for a 712 unit (they seem to have a better reputation), but I was unwilling to sign on for another 24 months with DISH. We shall see what happens.

vip622
By: Ed
September 6, 2009 @ 7:28 PM08ppm9>
three service guys over the past couple weeks replaced vip622, feedline, combiner, outside grounding, LNB and the freeze problem still occurs. This problem is occuring on my Vizio so I moved the DVR to a analog TV in the other room which uses a HD receiver but is set for Standard channels off the satellite except for some HD only channels. I swapped the vip211k HD receiver from the analog set to the Vizio HD set and it works fine. The vip622 DVR is not freezing up on the analog tv that I swapped to.. I’m thinking somehow my Vizio may be interfering with the DVR. Can’t figure out why that would cause the DVR to lock up with no remote control function, black screen and then begin searching for satellite. I tried changing the HDMI, Composite and ch3 video inputs from the VIP622 but problem still occurs so that eliminates a input cable. Almost acts like a home computer lockup where everything freezes but the DVR has been changed 4 times. weird problem… Wonder if someone else has a Vizio with a similar situation.

Mine works perfectly
By: ZumaHans
August 27, 2009 @ 10:14 AM20pam8>
Sorry to hear about all the lemons. Mine is a peach. Two years of heavy harddrive use and no problems to speak of. At one point I put it in a rack with a very-hot audio amplifer that caused it to overheat and reset. Turning the audio amp off solved the heat issue temporarily, and moving the boxes apart solved it permanently.
This sounds like a shill, but the 622 has been a wonderful product.

Freezes in middle of viewing

July 30, 2009 @ 4:39 PM09ppm7>
Picture freezes and the remote won’t work, I have to unplug the electric outlet to reboot. Dish said to switch lines because I have an HD box without DVR in the next room that works fine. I switched lines and pics and remote still freezes on vip622, I tried a new splitter on the back of the unit and it still freezes up. On the 3rd box, been a customer for 9 months and my wife hates the vip622. I have the Turbo HD Gold package which is better than the Direct TV HD package. I might just get rid of DVR and get a straight receiver until they come out with a new single room DVR that works. Who knows if Direct TV’s new DVR is any good or has it’s share of problems too.

VIP622 Junk!
By: Gary McBride
July 19, 2009 @ 8:42 PM23ppm7>
I am now on VIP622 #5. DN refuses to replace to a different model without committing to a 24 month contract or pay full price for the upgrade. I have always been a fan of DishNetwork. This will be my last replacement, If it happens again, I am switching to Directv. Which at this point, the switch looks likely. Every unit overheats or powers up and down over and over…I have lost many hours of DVR recordings, and down time due to replacements. Please stay away from VIP622.

VIP 622 DVR is garbage

May 4, 2009 @ 8:27 PM59ppm5>
Same as everyone else. First unit beat the odds and lasted a couple years, but have been through 4 “refurbished” units in the last 14 months. Dealing with tech support is a long, drawn out, frustrating adventure. I would reccommend a speaker phone and some snacks because you’re not going anywhere for a while. And if you succeed (in convincing them to replace it because there is no fix) in only one phone call count yourself lucky. Can’t wait for the end of my contract.

March 11, 2009 @ 9:40 AM17pam3>
Well, I can’t remember if this is number 3 or 4 for us.
This one has taken to a fit of rebooting.
Last one would lock up when the phone rang and the caller ID would pop up.
They are junk, and then they tell me they are shipping a replacement, which I have to pay the shipping charges. And too boot, it will not be here till early next week.
So, no TV for the entire weekend, and to top it off, my buddy tells me he has Direct TV and they send out a tech and replaced his DVR with a 4 hour window. I get mine left on the porch for me to install, and then box up the old one and take it to the UPS store.
Oh yeah, and all my movies will be on it when it goes…..

ViP 622 = Unreliable junk
By: Michael Wilson
January 21, 2009 @ 10:40 PM42ppm1>
When considering selecting Dish network as your provider, be sure to consider the reliability of the receiver. THe HD receiver, the Vip622 is best regarded as junk. I’m on my 6th on from dish. The support folk acknowledge that it’s junk, but readily admit there is nothing that they can do about it. I infer from that that statement that the corporate folk must consider this an acceptable trade off.
Think it through before selecting DISH Network and the ViP622 DVR

622... The Crap that is a DVR
By: Brian Biddle
November 16, 2008 @ 10:59 PM34ppm11>
We are on our 3rd 622. Same as everyone else… constant resetting. I’ve been told off the record that they know it’s an issue and are in a state of “fact gathering” a also told that their equipment is fine and the problem is with my electric outlets (which is not the case at all). I’m going to be simpleton and try a 4th 622 and if this one is junk (which I expect it will be) then I’m moving on to Time Warner (and that’s not looking too encouraging either.) In a nutshell, cable/ satellite TV is crap… they all take your money and screw you in the process…
Time to turn the TV off and read some books…

Poor Quality!
By: Raul
November 3, 2008 @ 11:05 PM59ppm11>
When it works, this receiver is pretty nice. Delivers a very solid picture. The problem is that 3 of them have died on us. Every time it’s the same thing. It reboots and then “loses signal” for good. The guy who has been swapping them out admitted that these are all refurbs, so technically none are brand new. That makes sense given so many people have had problems with these things. I went with Dish Tv because they had a couple of channels I really wanted. What a mistake. They subsequently dropped those channels and I ended up with crappy quality equipment. WHAT A MISTAKE! My contract runs out in December and I can not wait to go to DirectTV.

I have had two receivers replaced in the past 10 months. You loose everything you had recorded when it goes out. All it will do is turn on and reset itself over and over gain. If I had it do do over I would go with Direct.

Terrible
By: Paquerette
October 6, 2008 @ 4:29 PM58ppm10>
We upgraded to HD and got the receiver, it only lasted 1 week, they send a replacement and the second received lasted 1 week again! We cancelled our account over this agravation of not being able to watch tv. The receivers were running hot, and we constantly got the ” No Signal” thing. They wanted to send us a third receiver, but really in less than a month…they won’t admit there is a problem with the box, that should have been fixed before they came out. We loved Dish Network and had been customers for over 7 years, they were the only ones that had a French Channel ( i’m french) and i gave it up because it was so bad!

622 resets constantly
By: Blake
September 24, 2008 @ 9:30 PM38ppm9>
We finally bought an HD tv and added HD programming to our existing Dish Network service. The 622 they installed worked for about an hour (fantastic HD picture!) and then started reseting. If we unplug it for a while it will sometimes work for a few minutes before starting to reset over and over. Getting this unit replaced has been a real hassle – the local contract installer for Dish stood us up a couple times. Finally we contacted Dish directly to get a new 622 shipped directly to us. Waiting for it now. BTW, the installer said we must have gotten the “one in ten thousand” 622s that was bad.

622 locking up and rebooting

The 622 is great when it works.
I have had three replacement 622’s and all have the same problem. Intermittently the 622 will lock up with blue screen and the hard drive will run for hours. The only solution seems to be to unplug and leave overnight. 622 is in an open space.
This seems to always occur at critical times in programs :(

8 Months of excellent service
By: Ruben
June 24, 2008 @ 1:06 PM18ppm6>
Wow, sounds like when this unit first shipped there were some real software issues… However, I received two of these for a 4 TV hookup last November, and both have worked flawlessly for over 8 months. The units do run hot, but neither one has ever gone into an overheat condition. I love the image quality of HD programming and the programming and DVR flexibility that the unit provides. True, some SD channels look bad on our 52″ Sony Bravia, but that is not the DVR’s fault. I have an external USB hooked up so that I can save additional DVR stuff there (I archive lots of classic movies for viewing at my leisure) – works SUPER. If need be, you can record three programs and watch two recorded events all at the same time! Double WOW! Absolutely no self-reboots, audio drop-outs, lip sync problems noted. Am I blessed, or what? I think “or what.” Note: DO NOT coop this unit up in an entertainment cabinet, they run hot! Also, it occurs to me some of the issues noted in this blog may be caused by incorrect dish antenna alignment (audio drop-outs and pixelization?). If properly installed these receivers are the best on the market!

The VIP622 is the biggest piece of crap I've ever owned.
By: JD
June 6, 2008 @ 11:38 AM58pam6>
This thing actually would be a good receiver if it actually worked. The problem is once you get more than like 15 shows programmed to record, you realize the software is absolutely abysmally horrible. You literally cannot do anything to modify your programs without the receiver freezing for a 1-2 minutes and then resetting itself, which takes an unbelievable 6 minutes. This happens literally every single time you add a new show to record, delete a show to record, modify the time it’s set to start, prioritize one show over another, etc. (like I said literally anything to do with modifying programs).
This is so incredibly annoying and it happens on EVERY SINGLE VIP622 one once you add enough programs to record (call “timers”). I have owned 5 different receivers, and they all work fine until you add enough programs, maybe 15, the more you add after that the worse it gets. Dish said I should be able to set as many timers as I want without any problems, but they fail to realize or even acknowledge that tons of people (the people who actually set it to record more than just a small number of programs) have these problems, so they just keep sending out replacements that have the same problems once you add in all the shows you want to watch (for me it’s about 30-35).
I don’t have a choice because I’m not in charge of the TV service where I live, but I would never ever pick DISH HD service with this receiver being the only choice (or the VIP722 which is the same thing with more space). Maybe once they realize what a complete piece of crap their receiver is and change it to something that actually works I might consider them, but not until then. Do yourself a favor and if you like to watch TV and record several different programs, like more than 15-20 do not get this receiver or you will be terribly disappointed and frustrated.

April 14, 2008 @ 11:38 PM09ppm4>
I upgraded to the HD/DVR reciever in Sept 2007. The first box had a bad modem causing the home phone to be out of service for quit sometime. Dish sent another reciever which wouldn’t even give us a picture. They then sent us 2 more replaces(a screw up on there end). We finally got one that worked up till last week. We installed the 5th replacement on Thursday, guess what it’s also bad. A service tech is coming out on next week. In the meantime, I’m watching a black and white picture on a large high def Panasonic TV, that is when the 622 isnt’ resetting itself!

April 6, 2008 @ 10:08 PM05ppm4>
We have had 3 receivers fail in a little over a years time. The 1st receiver stopped working and would not power up. The 2nd receiver hdmi port stopped working. The 3rd receiver would continuously reset itself. Dish has replaced all 3 receivers at no charge because we pay the monthly charge for the dish protection plan. All 3 receivers tend to run really hot. I recently installed cooling fans in the tv cabinet which has taken care of the receiver running hot. If the 4th receiver does not do any better we will be dropping dish. I hate this because when the receivers are working they work great. Awesome picture quality and great features. Maybe the 4th time is the charm. Good luck if you get one.

Stealing Money: About the Service
By: James
March 28, 2008 @ 11:26 AM54pam3>
I know this might not be a right place to jot this review down. I don’t have any problem with the instrument. They work fine.
It’s about the service. Is Dish Network all in one? Or- the agent that I have been dealing with is like this. I feel like every month, I am paying at least 1.5 times more than what I should be paying. All kinds of dramas Dish Network comes up with to charge the customer over the service price. I have really been fed up with all kinds of charges they come up with.
It is just me or there are some other people out there who have been reaped off by Dish Network.

Ben is wrong - it works great
By: Cat
March 13, 2008 @ 11:16 AM15pam3>
Ben on 3/3/08 says you can’t move HD content to an external hard drive, which is totally false. I have a 500 GB hard drive which is almost completely full of HD programs, movies and shows that have all been previously recorded on my 622.
He also says he ordered his before they were released and waited months. I ordered mine by calling Dish Network on the day they were released (they didn’t take orders before they were released–Ben must have tried some other source), and mine was installed 21 days after that. I’ve had mine for over 2 years, with absolutely NO problems. It does everything it’s supposed to do and exceedingly well. Sure, Ben and DJ may be on their 6th receiver, but sometimes it depends on how you use a product. I’m on my original, using an HDMI to DVI cable, with optical sound.

622 sucks
By: Ben
March 3, 2008 @ 9:39 AM41pam3>
I ordered the 622 before it was even released. I waited months to get one. When it finally arrived I had to immediately get a replacement. Component out was burned out. NO HD from HDMI either. I am now on my 6th receiver in less than 1 year. The latest issue to come up has to do with recorded material transfer. They claim that you can transfer your recorded material to an external HDD. #1 you can only transfer SD. NO HD Content at all. #2 the system shuts down and reboots every time you try to transfer more than 1 program at a time. I’m only trying to transfer 30 min shows and I’m lucky if I can get 1 done before reboot. The NEXT surprise is they make you pay $40 to activate the transfer feature. Unless you’re using a pocket dish. Even then it does NOT work. If you do have an external HDD they fail to mention that it has to be self powered and in between 40-750GB. I just bought a MYBOOK 1TB=1000GB and found out it is NOT supported. They push all of these so called features as great selling points but they fail to tell you about all the specifics until after the fact. When I called to complain I got 2months credit for my DVR service. $12 big deal. I lost 100’s of hours of recorded content every time I had to switch receivers. I finally got a hold of an honest CSR who told me that all these known issues/BUGS were worked out in the new 722. However I can NOT have one unless I pay $600 for it. I’m seriously thinking about going to DirecTV.

I have the worst service ever from Dish network. Equipment broke 2 xs within seven months. They don’t warranty it so you have to pay to have it serviced. They also make you sign an 18 month contract. Customer service is difficult to deal with as well. There is no one to talk to but someone in another country reading text from a computer screen that can’t carry on a conversation without it. I was without service for 1 month waiting for the tech to show up on 2 accounts.

Poor Dish Receivers
By: Kent Roorda
January 30, 2008 @ 11:10 AM19pam1>
I have been through THREE 222 receivers and TWO 622 receivers and all have the same problem: Audio and video are out of sync with each other. HD is supposed to be just that; High Definition. However, with this receiver, you get LD… Unless you consider out-of-sync audio & video High Quality? Obviously, the actual receiver in the 222 is the same as in the 622 (the 622 is a DVR). I’m getting very tired of swapping receivers for new ones that are just as bad and problematic as the one’s I have sent back. After a while, one quickly learns that the receiver(s) that have been sent back are not ‘broken’; rather, they are just poorly engineered. Thus, a new, replacement receiver isn’t going to do any good. It’s just a waste of time.

Tech support seems good to work with but cannot cure the problem.

One Good Report on the VIP 622
By: Jerry K
November 15, 2007 @ 10:22 AM39pam11>
After reading all these reports, I feel very fortunate that I possibly have the one working unit in existence! I purchased mine over one year ago and it’s still working without any of the problems reported. My older 1080i monitor doesn’t have HDMI connectivity, so I don’t know whether I would encounter the audio delay problem. I don’t record more than about 75% of the disc capacity, and I’m just about to receive an external drive, which I’ll connect to the 622 (at a one-time charge of $40) to keep the storage on the main drive low. I have to say in my experience that the 622 does a great job in all respects of recording and display. So far.

Good for a week
By: Bill
November 14, 2007 @ 10:13 AM26pam11>
I switched over to this unit a month ago and after a week, it would shut off by itself and the disc would spin endlessly. I returned this unit and got a new one. After about a week, the screen would freeze for 20 seconds to a minute. I called Dish Network and canceled my service. I am being charged $200 for breaking my contract early. I don’t really care! It’s better than paying $80 a month for something that doesn’t work.

Dish VIP 622
By: Steve
October 31, 2007 @ 1:27 PM21ppm10>
I’ve been with Dish since 1996, had a Dish DVR since 2000, and upgraded to the VIP 622 with HD service almost a year ago. Everything was outstanding until mid-September when the HDMI output on the 622 died. The replacement constantly loses sound, freezes, or shuts itself down (up to every 10 minutes). The third 622 is in the mail, so its status is still unknown.
Here are my observations on the 622 and Dish:
1. Dish has the best DVR interface I’ve seen anywhere. (I’m familiar with both DirecTV and TiVo systems.)
2. Dish has the best HD programming packages that I’ve seen anywhere.
3. The VIP 622 does run very hot and I’ll install a small fan when the third one arrives to see if that helps.
4. When working as advertised, the 622 is an excellent HD DVR — I only long for a 722 due to the increased storage capacity.
5. Dish technical support is as good as any other support I’ve worked with anywhere. They are more than willing to stay on the line with one as long as it takes to work out all issues.
6. The 622 manual does leave a lot to be desired and glosses over a lot things that help (someone like) me understand what is going on in the setup, but their website does help a lot.
7. Due to the recent spate of problems with the 622, my wife will probably force me to go to DirecTV or cable TV if the third DVR doesn’t fix our problems. She’s had enough and she does virtually all of our recording from the DVR to DVDs.
8. Dish customer service is a bit ham-handed (at best), but once more, their technical folks have helped me a lot. I left Dish for about a year between 1999 and 2000 due to a stupid $5 dispute over the status of my first Dish system when I sold the house and moved to another state. After I tired of even worse service and higher bills for less programming from a cable TV provider, I came back and am not really ready to dump them just yet.

Junk junk junk!!!

October 23, 2007 @ 9:35 AM54pam10>
We’re on our third receiver in less than a year. The receivers constantly reset spontaneously (which makes it a little upsetting to call tech support only to be told to reset the receiver!) While I feel somewhat better finding that I’m not the only one with this problem, I am outraged with DISH. I was just on the phone with them, and the tech service person told me that my situation was very unusual and he had never heard of anyone having trouble with this product!!! I guess I’ll be calling DirectTV. The only positive thing I can say is the tech support people have been pleasant and the wait time on hold hasn’t been too long.

VIP 622 won't hold 1080i
By: Kim Dobson
September 30, 2007 @ 12:30 PM18ppm9>
Recently Dish Network did a software upgrade. I believe the software upgrade was L442. When that happened my VIP 622 would not hold a 1080i picture to my Panasonic Projector…. before that no problems at all. We have changed the receiver 3 times and still doesn’t work. Works fine on my 42 inch plasma though and worked fine on the projection system before the software upgrade. Anyone else dealing with this issue?

Audio video out of sync with HDMI on Dish Network
By: Donna
September 26, 2007 @ 11:08 AM12pam9>
Switched to HD 622 receiver in Feb 07. Installation tech told us to use HDMI cable for better video. Paid $30 for cable. On switch to HD immediately had audio sync problems. Had problems with other cables as well. Dish changed out receiver 3 times before telling us it was a known HDMI cable and 622 receiver problem and they were working on it. It is now Oct and we still have the issue. It was sporatic for about 6 months and now for the last 2 weeks it is constant. It only happens on the 622, our HDVR has perfect audio/video sync.

Audio lip-sync problem with HDMI
By: redd
September 21, 2007 @ 10:11 AM55pam9>
Been with the dish network since 2003. Never had a problem. July 2007, decided to upgrade to the vip 622. Had to call tech support four times in one month. DVR would shut off on its own, or decide not to even turn on at all. After getting it up and running, I noticed the audio on HD channels was out of sync. Called tech again. Was told to unplug my HDMI cable and try to use either composite or component cables. They even blamed it on my HDTV which is only one year old.

ViP 622 DVR Resets itself for no reason
By: Sai Ki
August 12, 2007 @ 2:19 PM41ppm8>
Same woes here!!! I subscribed (contract!!) to Dish Network hardly 2 months ago. I have already gone thru 2 622s so far. The system restarts by itself for no reason. After so many hours of trouble shooting with tech support (real painful experience though) Dish Network replaced the first 622. Everything seems fine with the second. However, the second 622 also started resetting itself!!
One common theme (I think) between the 2 DVRs was that the problem seem to start once the DVR’s hard disk is full. Once you let it filled up, the problem does not go away even after you delete older recordings and make space.
I believe it is a technical issue something to do with the software. Dish Network sent a technitian but the guy was perplexed with the issue. Here is what I have tried so far (so people can try them to see if it works – some of the steps per tech support and some on my own).
1) plug-in to another outlet (assuming grounding is not proper in a particular outlet) – STATUS: Does not resolve
2) restart the DVR by unplugging and keeping it off-power for about 10 – 15 mins – STATUS: Does not resolve
3) Reset by pushing the "power" button on the unit – STATUS: does not resolve
4) Plug-in directly to wall outlet as opposed to a power surge protector – STATUS: did not help!!
I am at the verge of cancelling the contract and I am really frustrated. I am usually patient and willing to work with Dish Network to resolve the issue. But dish Network does not seem to know whats going on. I cannot believe I am the only one with this issue and I am glad that I am not the only one going thru this (misery loves company). Hopefully Dish Network does something to resolve the issue.

Over heating
By: Kevin
August 11, 2007 @ 10:21 AM04pam8>
My first 622 worked fine until the hard drive failed. Dish replaced it quickly. The 2nd over heated despite having 10 inches above and behind the unit in the entertainment rack. Sent that back to Dish as well. When the 3rd one started over heating I pulled it from the rack and set it on the some books in the middle of the floor. Even when the room was 75 degrees, the VIP622 would reach a temperature of 143 degrees after 5-10 minutes of use. Dish is willing to send yet another replacement, but they won’t tell me anything about the problem. It is VERY frustrating to set these up over and over again, record a few of our favorite shows and then have to replace it.

Shameful DISHNETWORK Equipment
By: Mike
August 7, 2007 @ 8:56 AM13pam8>
We switched to DISH after over a year with Directv and had to replace the first VIP622 because it was defective. Called up support and they sent a replacement in a few days. But the sad thing is they refused to ship it back for free from our residence. Therefore we had to drive 17miles each way to the nearest UPS store. We hooked up our replacement VIP622 and within days it began to reset itself for no reason. It done this every week for atleast a day. But as of 8/06/07 the receiver will not work at all and CONSTANTLY resets itself and we have done all the silly troubleshooting that Dish instructed. After all this trouble we are most likely going to contact the BBB and file a complaint against both Dishnetwork and the retailer because of their poor workmanship and forcing us to drive 30+ miles each time THEIR receiver breaks on us. Very bad business. I plan on filing with the BBB this week and requesting the BBB to file a resolution that will get us out of the Dishnetwork Contract as well as the retailers contract.
If you are with Directv then STAY WITH THEM AT ALL COSTS. Because Dishnetwork has very under par customer service and very very poor equipment. You have been warned!

July 25, 2007 @ 10:38 PM55ppm7>
I have been with Dish Network for about two years and had the old non Hd receiver until I decided to upgrade to HD. I never had any problems with the old DVR. I have nothing but problems with the 622. It freezes up constently and in effect reboots which takes about 3 to 5 minutes a pop. I have been through 3 of these receivers now and am going to have try yet another one. I am at wits end with this thing. Don’t understand why they are using such bad hardware.

Best DVR
By: Jeff
June 30, 2007 @ 8:43 PM10ppm6>
I’ve used the original TiVO, a TiVO Series 2, a TiVO Series 3, and a Motorola 6412 from Comcast, and the ViP 622 is the best of all of them. Multi-room viewing is a killer feature, as is the ability to record up to 3 HD shows at a time while watching another (one via an antenna, and two from the satellite).
I’ve had it for 6 weeks now, and it has not lost a show or shown signs of any bugs. I guess there were some glitches earlier in 2007 as new software updates were released, but I’ve had no problems since I got it in early May.

Trash the 622
By: Steve
February 27, 2007 @ 6:40 PM05ppm2>
I bought a new 46″ Sony LCD with all the bells and was ready for some fine HD that I had watched on other set not even close to my purchase. I ordered the 622 and the HD package from dish. From the first day we experienced pixalization on the HD channels and the box kept resetting by itself. then we started getting audio burbs and drops. I called dish and was told i had a bad 622 and a new one would be sent out. Received the new 622 and tech installed it and said they have not had any problem with one before. That night the quality was much worse. I couldn’t even watch a recording the pixilization was so bab. I called dish back and was told it was a known problem with the 622, but they didn’t know when a fix would be downloaded. I was also told dish doesn’t compensate for known issues. What?? That was it, enough lying and bad TV. The 622 and dish are out of here!!

Not the best DVR, but decent

January 22, 2007 @ 6:31 PM04ppm1>
It runs with really no problems, but the user interface is a little lacking in areas. Before I was using a MOXIE box from Charter, which had a much more intuitive interface. It was much easier to program what you want to record. I’ve had this for a couple months now and I’m happy with it on our HDTV, but now that I want to use it on a 2nd TV I’m finding out that the 2nd output is SD not HD, which is disappointing.
It’s a good device but I wish it had a little more.

Service folks wanted to rewire my house.. no reason this 622 was replacing flaky 501 and an even flakier 811. Service guys smelled heavily of smoke and didn’t even take off shoes. after they left I successfully foud the two problems.. 1) they didn’t attach the rf out of the 2nd and the seperator output for the 2nd sat receiver was “hosed” and they wanted to rewire the house and “diplex the signal to lord knows where. No weaxch time the receiver is awaken from sleep it must do a Swithch check because the seperator is hosed and it’s only getting a signal on sat1 … Service folks didn’t need to come and they could have shipped the unit. 50 minutes on hold for a account repep to escalate the call ..Shameful… unit hooks to a Yamaha AV amp thru component (RGY) and digital sound is better than the previous. Remote works better as dose the local off air HD receiver.. Not the best out of the box but better than what I had before..

622 receiver is junk
By: tim
December 5, 2006 @ 8:33 AM52pam12>
I recently upgraded to a Dish 622 receiver. The HD programming was perfect, but the SD programming was very poor quality. I described the picture as grainy with color bleed. This was on both my brand new HD tv and on my existing tv. The tech was 7 hours late showing up for the install (scheduled for 8-12am and showed at 7pm) and I only had it on HD channels while he was there so I didn’t see the problem with the SD channels until he left. The tech was very nice and left his personal phone # so I called him first thing the next morning. He said he’s seen this same problem about 10 times and it’s a receiver problem. Even so, I called DIsh and they sent me a replacement receiver. Same problem with the replacement. Called Dish again, and they scheduled another installer visit. He ran a cable straight from the dish to the receiver to eliminate all house wiring and the problem still existed where HD pic was flawless and SD pic is grainy. I was using an HDMI cable. We also tried S video and the banana jacks and all 3 methods looked poor. (Also keep in mind I had Dish before and I know what the pic quality should be with SD programming from them.) The 622 was nowhere close to the quality I had before with my 625 receiver. This installer called several co-workers and 2 of 3 guys he called admitted seeing this problem several times before. I called Dish again. This time they sent a regional technical manager to my house. He didn’t even try an experiment to fix the problem. He acknowledged this as a known problem with the receiver and that there was nothing he could do to resolve the issue. I called Dish yet again. THey wanted to sent another tech to my house by I refused to continue on with this painful waste of my time. I sheduled an installer to come rip out everything HD and returned to my 625 receiver and have good quality picture again, I just don’t have HD. I’ll wait for DirecTv to add more channels and switch to them.

We were former customers of Dish and decided to go over to Directv for a couple of years. Dish gave us a come back offer that was hard to resist – we were excited about the ViP622 and signed up – we are almost 30 days into this with failure galore. We will jump back to Directv luckily because we got a 30 day guarantee from Dish. Thank goodness we were only at day 26 when she crashed on us. I won’t wait for the software work around and the continuing tech solution of turning the unit off and then back on….sorry Dish – I don’t want to be your beta tester.

November 10, 2006 @ 5:07 PM59ppm11>
I bought my 622 in March from Solid Signal because I didn’t want to get into a lease. I had our local Radio Shack do the install for me.I have only two complaints thus far. The first one is the audio drop out. It has happened only once, but I had to do a hard reboot to get the sound back. The second complaint I have is in the guide. I used the scan for local channels and added them to my line up. I am not able to set timers for my local channels because the description in the guide just says digital service. I hope Dish Network sends out a fix for this. I know it is possible for the guide to display the local channel information because my 811 in the other room does this.

I leased the 622 three weeks ago. At the time I had it hooked up to our old Sony 43″ CRT rear Pro. with component cables. It worked fine with an ok picture and the second tv work ok (great DVR). Then We purchased a Sammy HL 5687W 1080p, hooked it up and it was unbelivable. The picture was amazing. It was worth the wait and the TV picture was every thing they said it would be. That was for one day. Then the HDMI connection went cows udder up. Not all at once. It would lose signal, I would move the connection and it would come back to life. Now We are on component cables again and DISH says it will be months before the software problem is fixed. I asked them if it could be an internal connection problem with the cable but they all said that it was software. This really sucks big time.

Amazing picture - Audio bug :(
By: Mike
September 26, 2006 @ 9:36 AM03pam9>
After much research and consternation I chose Dish and this receiver as my first foray into the Satellite world. The features on this receiver are phenomenal and the picture is amazing! My only problem is that the software contains a bug that causes the audio to occasionally drop out every so often which requires a hard reset to fix. Dish informed me last night that this is a know bug and that they are working on a solution. I understand that this is bleeding edge technology and but hope that they get it resolved within the next 30 days.
On another note I am convinced that cable and satellite installers are not the brightest people in the world and most of them look as if they were just released from prison before showing up at your door. They guy that did my install was an idiot and left my receiver sit out in the rain in the bed of what was supposed to be a pickup truck. I have not been able to confirm whether or not he was driving a pickup truck but it had wheels and a ladder rack that was manufactured out of leftover conduit pieces and held together with wire.
