eMachines T2862 GOOD, not great.

Had mine for ~3yrs now. Updgraded to XP Pro, MS Office 2007 (w/MS Access), Visio, Adobe Photoshop, Limewire (for son’s music downloads), Norton Antivirus, Norton Partition Magic, all of which tax resources heavily, and it slowed a bit, no surprise, more RAM needed. Only 1 problem; needed to add a diskette drive so I bought a combo diskette/SD/CF/USB add-on. On installation discovered there aren’t enough parallel connectors on the motherboard to accommodate anything beyond the CD-drive it originally came with. Well,!@#$%, what good is that? I was trying to keep it simple.
But, otherwise it hasn’t given us any problems. Fingers crossed after reading about others’ power supply problems.

Well, this one never troubled me

In exception of the DVD drive everything else works fine and I had it since
Early 2005, the DVD drive went out right away, and I didn’t care I bought a Sony burner in exchange.
I very happy with the product, besides that drive problem I can’t think of anything else regarding hardware.

A friend of mine has the same eMachine with the same problem. I replaced the power supply, checked the power switch, memory, CPU. The thing still doesn’t power up. So it looks like the motherboard is toast. What a POS. I guess you get what you pay for.

Doesn't last long

I have this exact model and the power supply and motherboard are both shot. This seems to be a common problem for Emachines. Apparently the cheap power supply they utilize for this unit does not protect the motherboard or any other components. Stay away from it! Unless it is brand new, this POS won’t last for more than 2 or 3 years.

This was for the kids. Good thing. The power supply went and took the motherboard with it. When I did some research, this is a common problem. E-machines are willing to sell the repair kit for right around the price I paid to buy it. (Oh yeah, and you still lose all your data.) No thanks! I will not purchase other E-machines, or their parent company Gateway. In a nutshell, they sold me crap and want to charge an arm and a leg to repair it.

A deal too good to pass up.

This computer came as a package deal, with CRT monitor, speakers and Lexmark printer for just over $300, and this was around late 2005. It’s run well with a lot of use. I put 2GB of RAM in it and it sails even smoother. The only funky thing is that from the very first day, any audio out of the speakers has an annoying echo. I’ve tried to import audio from CD’s (store them as MP3’s and play them with RealPlayer) and you get that same echo with much of the vocals missing. It’s almost like the sound board is outputting L-R instead of L+R. In other words, it sounds like you’re listening to the difference between the stereo channels instead of the normal stereo audio. Really wierd. I’ve looked for some kind of sofware settings in the control channel, thinking maybe I had an echo effect activated, but I can’t see anything close to that in the speaker settings. So I finally called e-Machines and they told me to upgrade to a newer sound board. Sounds like a finacially beneficial solution for them. I hope it works. ($80)

Decent machine but slow

I recently acquired this PC and overall it is a decent machine but speed is an issue due likely to barely adequate memory. It boots up very slowly and is really slow connecting to various iInternet sites! In general it is slow to respond when opening programs. 256 megs of ram is just barely sufficient to get the job done!I will have to upgrade the ram to improve performance to acceptable speed.

I bought one of these PCs in December 2004, and initially had lots of problems with it – horrific read/write times on the disk and constant chain-faults. But, after using a restore DVD on it (a week after buying it…) it ran perfectly fine and continues to operate in excellent condition, although it is in need of a memory upgrade to accommodate certain software packages. Although I have moved from budget PC’s to high-end laptops for my needs, I still use this computer somewhat regularly, if not daily.

I too have been happy with the overall way the computer runs. Same as Taz – the power supply litterly sparked blue and yellow flames – had to yank it outside quickly! Mine is also a little over 2 years old.
Swapped out the power supply but mother board is DEAD :-(
You can buy a power supply for under $50 that compatable. Best Buy just wants $$ Now I need a mother noard ($50-100) depending on whre you look.
This was a xmas present from my son – sorry son, the PC is now dead.

I’ve been happy with the overall way the computer runs, but the power supply just stopped working this weekend with no warning. The tech folks at eMachines won’t even talk to me because it’s past warranty (the computer’s only 2 1/2 years old) and referred me to Gateway, who said to call back after I had the problem formally diagnosed by a retailer (hmmmmmmmm). Best Buy says they can replace the power supply for $110, but I’ve just found out the part (ATX-250-12E) has been discontinued anyways so I don’t know where they were getting their info from. I have to admit I’m very disappointed in this aspect of this computer’s performance – my old pc lasted for 8 years and NEVER had a problem with the power supply. And I can’t even find a website for the manufacturer of the power supply (Bestec)!

I’ve had to replace a number of parts including my CDRW, ram, and i had to add a PCI vid card even though i’m not really a gamer just to run windows effectively. it’s an ok box for someone who isn’t gonna use too many resources but 256 ram just isn’t enough

great system for the money. emachines does a damn good job at delivering electronics at a great price (after mail-ins, i paid $300 for everything!) AWESOME support when needed.
the cons, it’s a windows pc. microsoft is one of the worst software developers i have ever had to deal with. i dont care what version of windows you run, it’s a sh*tbomb.

Very low memory to handle Windows XP, Virtual Memory Minimum Too Low message appears if you use Word and Photoshop at the same time, and the graphics processor is a let down, especially when you also play great games like Counter Strike Source, DO NOT buy if you want this for applications that need mind power..it just wont handle it

I really like my e-machines T2862! It’s a great PC for the home. Takes no time at all to burn CDs and the 8-in-1 media player is awesome. I recommend this computer to the home user with a tight budget!!!
