I’ve had this laptop for 4 years (college use) and haven’t had a single problem with it. Maybe I am lucky. I’m gonna continue to use it until it dies in medical school.

This latop works great, the only problem is that it rarely works. Like the last poster i’ve sent my laptop in for repair 4 times due to Video/LCD problems that made my laptop unusable.

Every time i get it back from repair, within 2 months its back to non-functional status with the same problem. There has been no end of frustrations with both the laptop and Gateway Tech Support/Customer Support.

I will never by another gateway laptop again.

My lab bought two of these, one for me to use. I’ve shipped mine back to Gateway 3 TIMES, due to faulty video or LCD problems. Once it was a motherboard problem. The other lab user just had his hard drive fail for the SECOND TIME. We bought these less than 1.5 years ago. Thank god for a 3 year warranty, I’m sure we’l be shipping these back more in the next year.

I have had my 450XL since Feb ‘03 and have literally worked it up one side and down the other. I’m an MCSE and support several small companies, and I use my 450 at each company. I run on several different wired & wireless networks – different applications for each. I have not had any severe problems at all (knock on wood), in fact I’m using it now to type this. A computer is like anything else. You’re likely to get a lemon once it a while. I recommend Gateway whenever asked and have purchased over a hundred of their machines over the years for my customers.

I have a XL450 and it is going to the shop for it’s second repair. First I had problems with it’s video, Gateways repair to the video card was to run a soldering iron over the solder joints. I Now have to send it back as the video is still having problems, and the audio out jack does not work anymore. I have only had this one a little over 2 months, and 2nd repair.

I’ve had my laptop for over a year now no problems I had the hard drive upgraded for a little more storage I only wish I had a faster CPU I’m running a 1.3 it’s still fast but more speed is always better. Recommendation A-0ne.

Out of the box the system was a bit slow for what it is supposed to be, one year later after the warranty has expired the hard drive started having fatal errors and I suspect this was always a problem. You can subscribe to Gateway Answers for support after the warranty but it’s spendy and basically answers read from a script, alot of wasted money.

I got my laptop, and I loved it . . . for a while. A month after I recieved it, I noticed some video problems. I ignored them and continued. Later, I noticed the same problem. I could even make it happen. I took it into Gateway, they sent it off, and told me I had a faulty video card. About 3 months after I sent it in, my backlight went completely dead. Yes the LCD part worked, but not the LCD. At that time, I also realized my DVD/CDRW drive didn’t write OR read at the advertised speed. I checked some forums for the same model, and other users from Dell, Compaq, and IBM had experienced the same problems. I took in my laptop to get repaired a second time. They fixed the backlight and gave me a new burner. The burner still doesn’t read or write at the correct speed. Not even a month after I recieved my laptop back, the backlight fails, AGAIN. I am currently waiting for it come back. I am A+ certified, and do not recommend Gateway products anymore.
