I have a Gateway 610 XL that has the same problem. when you get either a blue screen error, or Windows unexpectedly causes the computer to crash, the screen will go off. Mostly your processor has died, or the CMOS has completely halted all operations until the board is fixed: “How in the hell am I Supposed to do that?” – While searching on the Gateway support website on a borrowed computer, Gateway finally got fed up with me I guess and sent me to Mundocorp, Gateway’s parts shop, and they sell all Gateway parts and some other brands parts. You should dismantle your Gateway, remove the motherboard, and CPU (CPU will somehow save the data that caused the problem and crash the other board) and replace them both. After, you should not have any problems! ;) PS: Get spares just in case, and if PS begins to act up, get a spare for that too :]

Nice system when it works
By: James
March 3, 2008 @ 9:35 AM36pam3>
I purchased my unit when they first came out and got an extended warranty. When the warranty ran out so did my power supply. Without others in the same boat it would still be collecting dust. Gateway support doesn’t. All they want is for you to send it in for repairs which I refused to do. Thanks to EBay and my fellow owner’s w/problems I now have it back in good shape. It may or may not last another three years but right now it is performing great.
I would not ever purchase another Gateway just because I feel it should have been recalled when the obvious design defect became evident. They have lost a lot of customers if the internet blogs are any indication.
Other than the defect I am happy with the unit. I bought two power supplies just in case though. Rev 01 to boot.

Blinking Monitor = Say No
By: Dontbuy Gateway
September 16, 2007 @ 12:07 PM28ppm9>
This system is bad enough for me to never purchase a Gateway again. Consumers don’t buy a computer only to be charged to fix a problem that everyone that buys this model will eventually face if they haven’t already. This model is a lemon and is no longer support by Gateway. The system should have been recalled, but no such thing in the Gateway computer world. In either case, I would not purchase a Gateway again because of the problems I had with this machine (Blinking monitor).

I to purchased a 610 media player nad like everyone else the power supply crashed. I found a forum that describes why this happened. For what this pc can do to have only a 180 watt power supply makes no sense. i have a Gateway wich I bought brand new in 1999 and still runs perfectly. It has been totally upgraded for my son’s gaming experience. No wonder they no longer make all in one systems.

The blinking is making me go nuts. Is there anyone who has been successful in correcting the problem? Other than the blinking, which has made it impossible to use the machine, I like it and would like to keep it but not with the blinking.

Been mostly good for 3 years

I bought this re-manufactured 610xl 3 years ago. Last year the hard drive failed, (probably due to weak power supply) $200 to have Gateway fix it. Yesterday, the power supply crashed completely. Although not a perfect unit, its size and capabilities have performed well for the $1300 I gave for it. If I can get the PSU fixed cheap, I’ll still be pleased with this PC.

Terrible...
By: Charlemagn
October 13, 2006 @ 7:13 AM32pam10>
I got this PC as a gift a little over two years ago. No problems were had for about a year and a half, and the system worked flawlessly. I was, overall, amazed at it’s ability and speed. I never had any problems with it. But about three months ago it just started shutting on and off sporadically. I tried many numerous things, all to no avail. Finally my brother, who is more computer oriented, told me it was just a bad power supply. Luckily we found a reissued version of that part on Ebay for $70. We installed it, and sure enough, the computer worked flawlessly again for about two months. Until recently, I turned the computer on and the screen wouldn’t even come up. I pondered and pondered at an ominous blank screen staring back at me. I’ve tried whatever possible. I’ve tried unplugging it and plugging it back in, and just turning it on and off, hoping that it will come to its senses and just function for me. I think it’s the video card, but now I’d rather just buy a Dell or HP laptop at this point. No more heartache for me. This computer, as stated by many, is a great and innovative design, but it’s just not built to last. Not worth the trouble.

I think that majority of the flickering screen is due to turning on the computer for a long time. Or at least is is what happen to me. I have turn on the pc for almost the whole day (in between on and off) and it began to flick the black screen like crazy. Afterward, I turn off and wait awhile, than when I turn back on, nothing happen. So I don’t know, I only turn on the pc 3-5 hours, nothing happen.

Power supply problem....solved
By: Stephen
January 30, 2006 @ 8:45 PM06ppm1>
I’ve had the same problems as everyone else. My computer dies and won’t reboot, as a result of a bad power supply. I, also, have talked to everyone in India working for Gateway about this issue with no resolution except “sending my computer to Gateway to be fixed” for approx. $400 (give or take), and there’s no telling how long it would take to even get fixed. Anyway, I’ve talked to Gateway, Gateway’s supplier of power supplies (Skyline Engineering), and even the original manufacturer of the power supply (Delta Electronics, Inc.). I have successfully taken apart my Gateway media center and extracted the power supply, and once they begin manufacturing the newly revised power supply, I will purchase it and re-install it myself. This will easily save me atleast $300. If you find yourself in this same situation, please e-mail me so that I can provide you with the detailed description of how to do this, along with ample pictures so that you don’t have to go through what I did. DO NOT SEND YOUR COMPUTER TO GATEWAY, AND GIVE THEM YOUR MONEY!!! It’s not hard to get to the power supply, especially after you read my directions. Gateway is not owning up to their mistakes on this design, and I’m considering pursuing a class-action suit as a result. Their ethics are unacceptable, by charging such a horrendous amount for what probably takes them about 10 minutes to do, maybe less. Don’t be a sucker! E-mail me and let me help you out! No catch. stepwebb50@hotmail.com

Faulty Power Supplied...cont'd
By: Bruce C

I had the same annoying flashing black screen a little more than one year after buying the Gateway 610X. I couldn’t work while the screen flashed, so I hooked it up to my tv, and it wouldn’t flash there (although it did continue to flash on my Gateway monitor). However, just yesterday the computer made a loud noise when I pushed the power button to turn it on. The computer then shut down, and is now completely unable to power back up. I will never buy a Gateway product again. Extremely unsatisfied! How do we get a class action lawsuit going?

FAULTY computer
By: Todd S
January 16, 2006 @ 1:24 PM16ppm1>
Well, to add on top of these reviews…I’ve had the exact same thing happen to me concerning the power supply and crashes. I bought the 610XL in the summer of 2004 so I could take it to college. I’ve lost numerous documents due to crashes and I’ve had to re-install everything and set it all back to factory a couple of times. Now, THE COMPUTER DOESN’T EVEN TURN ON due to the faulty power supply. I assure you I’ve done nothing to harm the computer, and Gateway has to know that they sold a faulty product…being as they discontinued it shortly after I purchased mine. HOW MANY COMPLAINTS DOES IT TAKE TO HAVE A CLASS-ACTION RECALL?

Gateway 610 problems
By: daryl
January 8, 2006 @ 11:55 AM22pam1>
It was everything I wanted. I was space limited and it was such a bitchen design. Had gateway before, never had problems so I didn’t get extended warranty. Two months after my year ended, started having problems with it crashing. Got wore and shorter times before it just flat died. Called Gateway, and actually got halfway decent service. But I would have to send it to Dallas and pay for everything. 500 bucks and nine weeks later, I got it back. Frustrated but it seemed to work. Then this past November it started doing the same thing again, just eight months after I got it back. It was starting to get worse and called Gateway, They actually wanted me to send it back to them for the exact same repair and the exact same cost. What are they crazy? They don’t even stand by their repair parts and labor. I went round and round with these jerks for two weeks. They want another 500 plus the 500 I had already spent in repairs to fix it, I don’t think so. There’s some kind of Gateway Building in Irvine California, close by me. I went over there, went inside, got some peoples attention, went back outside, took my 610 out of the back of my SUV, put it on the ground in the driveway and proceded to drive over it back and for 6 times before driving away. I would rather get my satisfaction out of it that way than anything else. I Just bought a brand new HP and absolutely love it plus the customer service is absolutely perfect. Screw Gateway, I will never buy another gateway product.

HD killed... Now Power Sup Dead
By: Pete
January 6, 2006 @ 9:54 AM11pam1>
After dealing with Tech support I chose to replace the HD myself what a joy⦠by taking the entire system apart I inadvertently fixed the flashing screen problem that I was living with for about 6 months, canât figure out if it was just reseating the video card, cleaning the dust out or just dumb luck. That was about 2 months ago and now I have the power supply problem. I was thinking of doing an external 200W PS but canât seem to find the right connectors, if there are any tech guys out there that can point me towards a supplier that would be great. I wish Gateway would have just put quality parts in this system in the 1st place it has a great form factor and I would be glad to pay a couple hundred bucks more for a stable system.

-Found Power supply to be problem
-Found Power supply has faulty board, and nowhere to buy a direct replacement with fixed board (delta power supply.. a revision 00.. i read there exist one with fixed board… )
-gateway KNOWS this, DELTA Power supplies admits it!!
===============================
-currently running with external power supply and works fine… (200w and 350W)… but the base unit (the lil black boom box) has not sound on both units.
-my guess is it blew out a part on the mobo.. while blowing the old power supply… will have to open it up and check.

gateway media center 610xl restart

This updates my Aug 23, 2005 review. The problem I had is still there. I have had 27 events where power is lost, screen goes blank and computer restarts, since Aug 23. I have decided to just live with this situation until a catastrophic crash occurs. Then, I will agree to send it in for repair. For more info go to ” http://www.xpmce.com/forum/gateway610xl-sudden-restarts-v... Also, the address for the GATEWAY “EXECUTIVE RESPONSE TEAM” is 610 Gateway Drive, PO Box 2000, No. Souix City, SD, 57049. “THEY” provide the best alternative to getting results even though they can’t help me with my problem as of this date.

December 27, 2005 @ 10:38 AM11pam12>
Obviously, the screen going black on these PC’s is commonplace and Gateway is not fessing up…I had a moron from Gateway today tell me “it’s a software issue” !!!???…the screen goes black and comes back on no matter what program I’m running…I will pursue this from a different angle (legal) to see if there is anything we can do in terms of a class action suit…a company puts a computer on the market, sells it for $2000, discontinues it six months later and leaves customers to fend for themselves….WHAT THE HELL IS THAT ???…mine too has been back to Texas more than once and the last time it came back it was damaged so had to be returned AGAIN !!!…I am SO ANGRY with GATEWAY….they are clueless and if enough people hear about how they treat their customers, they won’t be in business much longer….I hope they go under soon……….

Don't buy a Gateway!!
By: Jenn
December 20, 2005 @ 5:46 PM09ppm12>
I purchased my gateway Christmas of 2003. My Gateway 610XL has been to Texas three times. CD/DVD burner was not working, so I spent hours on the phone with tech support. It was sent to Texas for the first time to address this problem. It was sent back with a note saying the CD/DVD burner worked, but it was also sent back with screws falling out of the area between the base and the monitor (they blamed it on poor shipping). The CD/DVD burner still did not work and the monitor was loose, so it was sent to Texas for a second time. When it came back the second time, the area around the monitor was damaged and the monitor was not completely put back together. To make matters worse, the CD/DVD burner still did not work. I decided to just forget about this option on my computer. After a couple of months, I was no longer able to watch T.V. I had recorded. Again, many hours with tech support turned up nothing. I was told it needed to be shipped to Texas again. I was sick of the crap, especially since I needed the computer for work. I waited a couple of weeks before sending it. I am so glad I did. The monitor started going out on me. It got progressively worse to the point where it was only on for a second or two. So, I sent it to Texas again. I got a call from one of the guys in Texas who said my computer had been sent in “too many times” so he replaced a bunch of stuff. My computer was also restored. When I opened it up and turned it on, I instantly had an error message and an autotest program window. 45 minutes with tech support, and I find out that they forgot to uninstall software on my computer. So, I had to restore my computer again. I also had to manually install my drivers to get anything to work after the restoration. I attempted to talk to a supervisor after all this and was put on the phone with another tech support person who did everything in his power to keep me from talking to a supervisor. He was rude and I basically got off of the phone with an address to write a letter. In the last week, I have started to see the “NO SIGNAL:CHECK SIGNAL CABLE” message on a black screen. I will never, ever, buy a Gateway computer again!!

"What's with the flashing screen?"
By: Marc
December 5, 2005 @ 5:29 PM49ppm12>
I just reported my “flashing screen” problem to Gateway Support and they have offered to send me the shipping supplies and pay for the shipping costs this time (I had to pay for shipping when my “power supply failed”). Based on this generous offer I suspect they are already aware of this Flashing Screen problem. My Media Center just returned a month ago because the system kept shutting down and the Support Center reported I had a faulty power supply. I’ve never had so many problems with any computer I’ve ever owned (and I have 3 running in my home at all times).

Awesome when it works
By: Tom
December 4, 2005 @ 9:51 AM49pam12>
Have had the computer for about 18 months, has not worked reliably in about 6 months. Tech support is not familiar with the power supply problem. I can occasionally get the thing to turn on by reseating the memory cards, doing a rare combination of unplugging/plugging in the power cord, followed by a rain dance. Sometimes the above does not work.
Have emailed customer service to see what they have to say on the subject and whether they would refund/replace/repair the thing. I included a link to this page with all of the similar negative reviews. If they are unwilling to help, I would be happy to join, help and/or organize a collective fight against the MAN!

Love all but the one error!!!!!
By: Chris
October 27, 2005 @ 5:04 PM37ppm10>
I purchased my 610XL 4 months ago, and as soon as it arrived, the screen was black except for an error saying “NO SIGNAL:CHECK SIGNAL CABLE”. However, it is not the signal cable that is the problem. I did some research on the internet and came to find that in order for the video signal to work, the systems video card sends a signal to the screen to show a picture. So, I called Gateway. They sent me a whole nother pc and not even two days went by before it was doing the exact same thing. The only thing I can figure is that they chose a really bad video card for this module, or either it was not compatible. But, to fix the problem, just take the plastic cover off of the back of the pc and tinker with the video card. It is the long, wide green piece. That should solve the problem for a little while. Every once in a while, you may have to do this to regain the screen stability. I hope this has been helpful

What's with the flashing screen?
By: Larry
September 14, 2005 @ 9:18 AM56pam9>
I have such mixed feelings about this machine. When it works, it really is quite a showpiece. It is quite a sleek design, often soliciting ‘cool’ remarks from friends & family. Live & recorded TV quality is marginally acceptable. I am running s-video out to my 34′ family room set and extending the remote using an IR to RF interface. But I too have fallen victim to the “CURSE OF THE FLASHING / BLINKING SCREEN.” I have read comments related to power supply & backlights…but there is still a piece of the puzzle missing. I can’t put my finger on it. Though the screen does flash periodically without rhyme or reason, I can almost allways make it flash by running my daughter’s SIMS 2 University. I know the program is a big users of DirectX, so I am inclined to blame DirectX … BUT … there are flaws in that theory. Flaw 1). The problem occus (though not as often) even when DirectX is not involked. Flaw 2). I good hard smack (hit) on top of the monitor sometimes fixes the problem (for a while)…(Never heard of physical violence correcting a software problem :-) ) Gateway support is, of course, lacking. I’ll continue to waith threads & hope for the best. I will not pay Gateway for repair. I would welcome the opportunity to particpate in a class-action lawsuit, if this problem is really as pervasive as it appears.

Good and Bad
By: TomLeonard
August 6, 2005 @ 8:25 PM31ppm8>
The 610 is a really good well packaged Meia Center computer. Like many others I have had the screen go black and then, in a few seconds, restart. Whatever I had not saved was lost. Purchased an on-site warantee that GATEWAY would not/could not honor and was forced to ship it to the DAllas repair facility. It was returned in a few days but the problem returned in a month. Sent it in again and after a week, I asked when I would get it back. Never got a satisfactory answer. Wrote to the North Souix City headquaters to get someones attention. This worked and the representative agreed to get my computer back to me without the problem fixed. I will live with the intermittent until the power supply fails completly. I have been without the computer 3 weeks and it will be 4 more days before I am scheduled to get it back by surface FEDEX. Not very satisfied with GATEWAY and probably will not buy another one.

Media 610 - NOT RELIABLE

Having the same problem as hundreds of others–the Power Support Supply failed. Return under warranty. When I got the computer back, it still had the same problem. It’s at Gateway again–waiting 3 – 4 weeks for parts! They’ve had my PC for all but 2 days of the last 8 weeks, and probably for another 3 weeks–some warranty. They will not replace; customer service rep was rude. NEVER BUY A GATEWAY!–they do not take responsibility, even with a know manufacturing defect.

Well, I’ve owned mine for 8 months and yes, guess what? The Power Supply! Of course, I bought it as a re-manufactured system and figured at least all the bugs were fixed. Same problem everyone else is having…no luck finding one because of it’s one-of-a-kind design. Absolutely loved it before now. I think I can find someone to re-build the existing power supply and hopefully cure the problem. Wish me luck!

Repair Nightmare
By: Laura
May 23, 2005 @ 5:15 PM26ppm5>
My screen went black on 4/28/05. I sent the system back on 4/30. I received an e-mail on 5/5 stating that Gateway repair center had received my system, and would have the repairs made within 3 – 5 days. Today is 5/23 and still no computer. Calls to tech support/dispatch center/customer service yield the same result: Sorry, we don’t know the status of your system repair or when it will be returned to you. No there is isn’t anyone else for you to call. No no no. Today’s techie informed me that “I just got an e-mail today saying that there will be a 4 – 6 week delay in repairs on 610 media center pcs due to part shortage.
In researching other sites, I found the following information which has been helpful to others:
Ms. Jill Dean, Consumer Affairs
Office of the Attorney General
500 E. Capitol
State Capitol Bldg.
Pierre, S.D. 57501-5070
Executive Response Team
610 Gateway Dr.
PO Box 2000
No. Sioux City, SD 57049
I bought the 4 year, on-site repair warranty, but have since found out that there are virtually no on-site repairs possible for the 610XL other than a new mouse, keyboard, or remote control.
I have the feeling that these machines are beginning the break-down phase with no replacement parts. Oy. I hate Gateway. Never ever again

defective power supply
By: Sandy Smit
April 18, 2005 @ 8:02 PM00ppm4>
The majority of gateway’s 610 media center pc’s are being returned to the Texas repair center because of a defective power supply. Gateway will not admit this but it is the truth. We purchased four of the 610 media centers and within the first year two have been sent back for the power supply issue. Gateway’s repair does not solve the problem which will recur over and over again. The 610 media centers are junk. Gateway took them off the market quickly as soon as they realized what junk they produced.

i will never own another gateway product because of the trouble i have had with the 610xl media center. when i downloaded servicepak2 it crashed my computer. i have talked to every one at gateway including their aunt’s and uncles and any other halfwit they could come up with. they show my 3 year xtended warranty in someone else’s name , need less to say they want honor my warranty. when i put my restoration disk in the drive a message comes back saying does not reccognize disk , this is gateways own disk . no wonder they closed their retail stores their employees were probably afraid to come to work for fear of their lives. gateway JUNK

This is not a GETAWAY Computer design system. It is belongs to an Turkish designer with the coordination of FIC mainboards and small factor product company. So the PC is excellent but do not have a good support. It is well designed but it is so difficult to open it. Only the easy place to reach is the memory slots and tv tuner card.. The all other devices is hidden in the box and there is no any support to how to open it.. Anyway I like the shape and pratically usage of it. I wish the support would be more normal.. Or anyone can took the support from the hand of them ! : )

This unit had everything I wanted. Unfortunately, I did not get it. I have had many problems and have been unable to use the tv portion of the Media Center for months. I have been waiting almost 3 months for an IR cable that they insist I try before another repair. The unit could read the codes from my satellite receiver prior to the second repair but has been unable to since. I have spent hours on the phone with techs of various abilities and a couple who could not speak English well enought to understand the problem let alone provide a solution, sent it in 3 times for service during which the hard drive was wiped out and reloaded. I have wiped out the hard drive and reloaded it twice myself. They cannot replace the unit because they no longer manufacture it and WILL NOT replace it with a comparable unit. I have spent hours on the phone with the techs and have written the CEO, VP of Sales, VP of Customer Support and the Board of Directors. This company does not value or even care about its customers. I will never have another Gateway product again.

Bad Power Supply

Bought my 610XL less than a year ago. It has performed poorly from day one and has gone down hill since. One night while using the system, it just blacked out and has not powered up since. Effort s to get help from Gateway has been a nightmare. Nothing but continuous run around. This is my 6th Gateway system, and now certainly my last.

Bought my 610XL less than a year ago and found out today it’s been discontinued by Gateway….now there’s an encouraging fact…actually, I love the machine but have had an intermittent problem with the screen going black at will only to come back on when I jiggle the screen ???….only way to fix it is to send it back so backing up 200gig of data becomes an issue….I’m extremely disappointed in Gateway and probably will never purchase another unit from them….I actually upgraded my warranty to three years so I’m covered from that perpspective…just was looking forward to this type of PC taking off….looks like it won’t…..good luck if you’re one of the poor souls that bought one…

Pulled my 610xl out of the box and little screws start falling out of the pedestal, every time i moved it a new one will pop out. The hinge between the pedestal and the control ports was loose blocking the bottom inputs. Turn it on no operating system, will power up no OS. Gateway is sending a new one no charge, but who knows how long I will have to wait. Talked to a customer service rep tonight who was very rude because I could not understand her slurring her words she starts screaming at me. She says it will take 7-10 business days just to process transaction. Then it will have to be built then shipped. Looks like the people just slopped this one together and shipped it without checking it out. I am still very excited though to receive a new one that works considering all the features. Make sure that it is tested before shpping if you order!!!!!!!

I’ve had mine for four months now, with nary a problem and superb performance. Out of all the computers I’ve owned (at least eight over the past ten years), this machine has been the best to work with–and the easiest to set up and use. It takes us so little space and integrates so many peripherals I used to have scattered across my desk. This is a computer I plan to keep as long as possible.
