Cheap, terrible computer
By: Very Disapointed

I go to a small college, the college has a program set up so that so everybody has one of these computers with an IT department to help if you have problems. I have had this computer for two and a half years and have had numerous problems with it. For instance, it has not turned on, motherboard broke, pen divice had stoped working, wouldn’t charge, shut off radomly, keys fell off, touchpad stopped working. Every one at my school is having similiar problems like me, sometimes even worse that what I have had. So it is not just “bad luck,” I also take exceptional care of my computer but still weekly there is always a problem with it. It might look impressive out of the box, but unfortunatly the test of time has other plans. I can’t wait to turn this pile of junk in at the end of the school year, it will be my pleasure!

My favorite computer EVER!

I have had this computer for 6 months now, and it has been the best! I play Half-life 2 on it at 1024×768 and it looks just fine. I use an external wireless keyboard and mouse quite a bit at home, and use the pen to take notes in meetings and while reading books.
I also use Knoppix by booting from CD. It kind of works, but I can’t get the network to switch from wireless to wired.
My best purchase was Microsoft Streets & Trips 2005 w/GPS. It turns the tablet into a color GPS receiver. I never get lost now.
I will be using this laptop for the next 10 years. And the only upgrade I need to make is going with the 1024MB of RAM instead of 512MB.

SOLUTION TO THE WOBBLY HINGE- DIY
By: Kofi

After no-show from Gateway, I finally decided to take the hinge apart. I got a techie friend to guide me with the wires etc.
We took the hinge apart and found that it is not fastened at the back! It is just press-fitted.
We took it out completely and set it on a vice(with some fabric to protect against scratches. Punched the inner rim at 4 points to form a rivett and re-assembled. Hinge has been fine for about a month and shows no sign of weakness.
Cheers!

For a convertible this is the best one of the market. The Toshiba has a better screen, but an external DVD. I really enjoy the front load DVD. I had an Acer convetible before this, and this one looks sleek, performance is outstanding (1.6 Centrino), and no major problems. The screen does hurt your eye if you have it at the wrong angle, but this is a problem with all tablet PC (except Toshiba who came out with the +XGA which you can view at all angles). The price is cheaper for what you get than the Toshiba. It doesnt have a lot of ports but if you need them Gateway sales a nive port replicator that is sleek and light. OHH! The hinge. All covertible tablet PC have a rotating hinge (Except Gateway/hp), and requires gentle turning . I rotate mine at least 3 times daily and my hinge doesnt show any unsteady or whobble to it, but it does seem to turn easier after a while. No worries, Gateway has provided a 36 month hinge warranty. Something that Acer didnt have. A must have if you dont mind the weight.

I have had mine for three months and I’ve had similar hinge roblems with my gateway tablet and it was allready replaced once by Futureshop where I got it from. Now I will have to ship it to Gateway to get it fixed. What a drag and I need it for my small business….. I like the pc fine if not for the hinge

I love this Gateway Tablet PC!!!!!

I have waited 2.5 years for the perfect convertable TabletPC. Most previous attempts ,(Gateway included), would lack a few features that should be standard on a general laptop offering. I was first impressed with its internal CD-r/DVD Rom Combo drive. Most Tablets Lack this feature, (hint, hint Toshiba, Acer). It is convenient not to lug around extra hardware.
Also, I have noticed that most Tablets have older or slower processors. The M275XL has the Centrino Pentium M running Win XP for Tablet PC. Its faster than most, and coupled with 512Mb of RAM, it handles resource hogging office and media software very well.
Other small but impressive features round out the this great machine , are the firewire port, multi-flash card reader ,14″ display, built in WiFi, PC card slot 60GB hard drive and two 2.0 USB ports makes this unit a top of the line convertable Tablet.
I have read the M275XL downsides in previous reviews from other (whiney) users. Yes, it does get warm. What notebook does’nt? Yes, its heavy only if you carry it for more than eight hours. But hurting eyes? An easily breakable hinge? Come on, give me a break. Any monitor would cause eye strain after long periods of use. If you are careful with the hinge rotation, maybe it would last longer than three months.
So far this wonderful and stylish unit is the best converable Tablet PC. I wish that I can give it a 12 rating, and I challenge anyone to boast a better product that is currently on the market.

Heavy, slow, poor screen

Really disappointed in this last g-way offering. The screen hurts my eyes and the hinge is going to break before it sees 3 months. g-way has a lot of hype about this product, d/n believe it, they have a LONG way to go to produce a competitive convertible.
