Buy it Now:

Highs: Very quiet, fast, stays cool, supports both FireWIre and USB 2.0

Lows: Reliability still needs to be proven

This year we got the chance to test Maxtor's new One-Touch 300GB external drive which promises even larger storage capacities and many improvements over previously released drives.

Summary

We liked Maxtor’s 5000DV external FireWire/USB 2.0 hard drive in our review of it last year, however, many users complained of drive failures that we did not experience. Maxtor seems to have made dramatic improvements to their new line of external drives and appears to have been paying attention to consumer feedback.

The One-Touch series of drives are great for storing large amounts of data including music and movies and should prove to be a valuable asset to any multimedia enthusiasts.

With the included FireWire ports, you can stack a large amount of these drives on top of each other without having to worry about heat issues, and the auto power down feature will help ensure that these drives last a long time.

Read on to see what makes this product so useful.

Introduction

Last year we reviewed Maxtor’s 5000DV external FireWire/USB 2.0 hard drive and were immediately impressed by both its large storage capacity and fast speed. However, there were some improvements that we would have liked to have seen in newer versions. We also received several reports after publishing our review, that people were having terrible reliability issues with their 5000DV drive.

This year we got the chance to test Maxtor’s new One-Touch 300GB external drive which promises even larger storage capacities and many improvements over previously released drives. Offered in three trim lines, each with various storage capacities, the drives are priced at $249.95 for the 160GB version, $299 for the 200GB version and $399.99 for the 300GB.

Features and Design

Maxtor’s 5000DV drive reviewed last year offered a relatively revolutionary idea of having a one-touch back-up. Simply pressing the button on the front of the unit will activate the drives back-up software utility, Dantz’s Retrospect Backup Express. This feature worked as designed, automatically running a user-created backup script. The 5000DV not only worked as designed, but was very fast at doing so. However the 5000DV is not without its faults. First of all, the drive was large in physical size, extremely loud, and got very hot. In addition, there was no power switch to turn the drive off when not in use. As if Maxtor carried out our every wish, the new 300 GB FireWire, USB 2.0 One-Touch drive dramatically improves upon the Personal Storage Line (which the 5000DV is a part of).

At first glance, the drive has shrunk. The physical size of the One-Touch drive is a lot smaller than the Personal Storage drives and much better looking. Housed in a silver anodized aluminum casing the One-Touch drive stays a lot cooler than its predecessor. Now of course this could also be in part to the drives slower RPM speed of 5400RPM versus the 5000DV’s 7200RPM speed, but the heat has been reduced greatly nonetheless.

Secondly, Maxtor not only listened to our wishes of having a power switch, but they gave the drive the ability to turn off automatically when not is use via the included software. Now you can program the drive to turn off anywhere from 10 minutes of non-use to never. This will not only save the life of your drive, but will save you some money on your electricity bill.

And lastly, the drives overall noise has been reduced over the previous Personal Storage line. Even with the internal fan running, it is very hard to hear this drive over the noise your computer produces. On the 5000DV we reviewed last year, we could hear the internal drive working when in use; now the One-Touch 300GB is hardly audible.

Performance

In our benchmarking our One-Touch 300GB test drive appeared to trail the 5000DV we reviewed in all of our tests, but not by much. The One-Touch drive still outpaced the LaCie pocket drive in our transfer tests despite having a larger disk drive. Your results will of course vary depending on your system setup. We found that the USB 2.0 interface shaved 40 seconds off our same tests using the FireWire interface and with less CPU usage in the process. For a drive running at only 5400 RPMs our One-Touch drive still exhibited very fast transfer times.

System Configurations:

Windows XP Pro; AMD Athlon 2400+; Abit AT7 Max 2 motherboard; 1 GB DDR SDRAM 333MHz; PNY Geforce FX 5600 256MB video adapter.

Multiple One-Touch drives can be stacked upon each other vertically using the cases grooves, or positioned horizontally using the included stand. The stand definitely makes the drive look a lot sleeker and attractive should you decide to have the drive in plain site. The One-Touch button located on the front of the drive has also been changed and glows a very hip neon blue when the drive is on. When the drive is being used, the blue light will scroll up and down the front button giving it a 2000’s "Knight Rider" effect.

Packaged with the One-Touch 300GB FireWire and USB model are both FireWire and USB cables, an external AC power adapter, a vertical stand, a user’s guide, and CDs with drivers and the Dantz Retrospect software.

Use and Testing

Installing the One-Touch 300GB drive is very easy for both PC and Mac compatible systems. The included manual is very detailed and easy to read. There is also a quick-setup guide that comes packaged with the system which will allow you to install the drive in its basic configuration in a matter of minutes. Unfortunately, Windows XP was not able to recognize the hard drive at first so we had to install drivers. Unfortunately, Windows is not able to recognize the hard drive as an external device initially so you will have to install the software and drivers prior to hooking the drive up. We found this odd considering that most other external drives we have tested are recognized and useable right away, and some even have the client software on the drive, making for a quick install. Our review unit came formatted in the FAT32 file system format instead of the newer NTFS file system. Of course this gives the drive the most compatibility with both Windows XP, 2002, 98 and ME operating systems, but if you have a system that runs Windows XP and do not plan on using this drive with older systems, you may want to reformat this drive using NTFS file system to increase performance.

For Macintosh users, the One-Touch drive was just as simple to install, just use the software and follow the instructions. There are detailed instructions that come with this drive that will walk you through the process. Maxtor includes a warning notice for Mac users, so make sure you follow the instructions correctly.

Software

The Dantz Retrospect Express software which comes with the One-Touch 300GB drive appears to be much fuller-featured over the software included with the 5000DV drive we reviewed previously. We installed the back-up software and assigned it to the One-Touch button on our drive. One very cool feature of the One-Touch button utility is that you can choose to assign it to any back-up software program; you are not forced to uses Dantz’s software. Iomega’s backup software appears to be rather popular with many of our readers and we do not see why it cannot work with this drive.

We followed the instructions in the manual and the wizard in Dantz’s Retrospect Express and were easily able to setup a partition for backup using the settings we specified. During the back-up process, the software will tell you how much time is left until completed, so you can carry on other business in the meantime. One disappointing aspect of the Retrospect Back-up Express is that it will not create drive or partition images like Norton Ghost or Power Quest’s Drive Image. The Maxtor One Touch drives really aren’t for complete system images or complete backup images. It can be done but it is quite a process. If you’re looking to make complete images, this may not be the solution for you. Then you reinstall Dantz Retrospect Express, and at that point you tell the software to restore your system. Server administrators will most likely find these extra steps annoying and time consuming, but for the average consumer it should be relatively easy as long as you follow the instructions.

Since this is an “express” version, corporate users may want to opt for the full version of Dantz Retrospect which is capable of backing up workgroups and large enterprise servers and file servers.

In our real-world benchmarks, the One-Touch drive was able to transfer large files and directories without slowing our systems down to non-operable speeds. CPU usage was normal and we were still able to multitask while the drive was transferring. In each of our tests the One-Touch was very fast, quiet and smooth – just the way it should be.

Warranty and Reliability

Last year, after reviewing the 5000DV Personal Storage drive we encountered numerous e-mails from readers who had been experiencing drive failure after only a short period of time. The user review section of this review was also plagued with upset customers. While our test drive, which was the same retail version that consumers could purchase, experienced no known issues or failures, it became very evident that something was not right. So we lowered our overall rating of this product and posted an addendum reflecting the issues everyone was having with their drives.

The One-Touch drive we received for this review also experienced no known issues or signs of failing, but only prolonged use will tell us whether or not this drive is more reliable than it’s predecessor. So far, after leaving the drive on for a week straight, this drive looks rather promising. We have not experienced any problems whatsoever. Maxtor offers a one-year warranty from the date of purchase on the One-Touch drives, and while this may not seem very long, it is normal among hard drive manufacturers.

Conclusion

We will continue to test this drive to make sure it doesn’t experience any problems similar to those experienced with the 5000DV. We will also be watching to see what users post about this drive in our user review section to see if the One-Touch drive experiences any of the same reliability issues of the 5000DV drive or personal storage family. If we feel that reliability is an issue, then we will adjust our score accordingly.

We can say however with a fair amount of confidence that the One-Touch series is a reliable and solid performing product line based on our own experiences. Maxtor has added dramatic improvements to these new drives and appears to have been paying attention to consumer feedback.

We don’t think that there are any immediate improvements Maxtor needs to make to the One-Touch series other than perhaps lengthening the warranty, and for that we give high praise to Maxtor.

i bought a maxtor one touch usb 120GB external hard drive recently. i have been unable to get my computer (windows xp home) to recognize it as a drive. maxtor support has been of no help.
  • Porsche911
No offense but they mention in the review you need to install the software for Windows to recognize it. Try doing that before plugging the drive in. Instructions are there for a reason.

This is Better and cheaper (In comparison). http://www.lacie.com/products/product.htm?id=10118

i bought the 300 Gb drive & are running it without problems on both my mac & pc - when im not using it for filetransport, its plugged to my G3 & act as a fileserver, itunes music server & ftp server - no problem whatsoever!!
  • Olsson, M
    Great drive with good performance.
    Used for an FTP server.

    But,

The drive failed on me after an week of around the clock use. Now waitning on a new one.
  • Ian Bell
Well, I have had this sucker plugged in for weeks without hardly turning it off and it is still going strong. So far I would highly recommend this drive.
  • Jason K.
Installation was extremely simple and my XP Pro recognized it immediately. The OneTouch is whisper quiet, fast and looks very cool (I love the 'knight rider' blue light). I've been using it to store tons of digital photos, videos and MP3s etc. I love it!
  • Henry
I just can't get over how beautiful it looks :)

Short term - so far it's been great. Windows 2000 NT OS recognized it immediately and got it working without having to touch a CD.
The only thing i have found that's a bit of a pain is that it need's it own power source. I don't know if this is expected in external drive, but i found that a bit annoying with all the extra wires etc.

Otherwise fine - been running videos and songs of it for about 2 days straight now and i've had no problems.
  • rad
before i ever got to use the bugger it corrupted my boot files on my xp sys and crashed my system cant even boot up in safe mode or try to restore it sucks!
  • Larsa
    Hi rad
Have you checked your BIOS settings, so it will not boot from USB-device as first choice ?

Got one myself, and it works fine.

I had a 200GB One Touch I was using for data backup, attached via FireWire. After only three months of usage, I got an XP error message of a "Delayed Write Failure" and lost the drive on my system. I reattached it, and Windows crashed entirely. On reboot, I got dozens of error messages, and a clicking from the drive. All of my data is gone, and Maxtor is completely unapolagetic. Based upon other reports, it seems that Maxtor's external drives have real reliability problems, and are clearly unsuitable for storage of important data.
  • James
I had Maxtor's 80gb predecessor to this drive and after several months it began failing me. I decided it may have been a unique problem and returned it for a 120gb OneTouch. I was very mistaken in thinking that the same problems would not crop up in a couple of months. Maxtor does not care about screwing you over and they will, do not store any useful information on their drives!
  • Steve
As far as I can see I was taken in by what I though was Maxtor's good reputation. Following is what I have found out since I bought this drive:

It is SLOW due to the SLOW transfer rate! Maxtor is using a FireWire 1394a chip at 400Mbps rather than the 1394b chip which goes at 800 to 1600 Mbps, and which is VERY AVAILABLE. This means that actual transfer rates may be faster with the older USB2! I should have LEARNED the difference between the different FireWire standards...just because Maxtor states FireWire doesn't mean anything!

Also, the Retrospect Software is an "Express" version - I guess not a full version. Although OEM somehow it is not even configured properly for the Maxtor drive. For example there is no advice in the Retrospect "HELP" for "One Touch." It is ignored. When you go to use the One Touch button it does not allow you any but the simplest backup. The advanced options in the Retrospect software are NOT available through One Touch. For example I cannot find anyway to use that cute (One Touch) button on the drive using the encryption or compression options in the software.

In addition, due to the fact the Retrospect software is OEM (sic) it is not the latest version of Retrospect (6.5) and Maxtor has no upgrade that I can find on its website.

I made the mistake of buying this hardware believing that Maxtor, being a "respected" company would be using the latest hardware standards and would be using fully configured OEM software.

Purchased three Maxtor drives and one never worked. The other two slowly died over the next few months. I would never recommend Maxtor to anyone.
  • fred farke
Bought the Maxtor one touch 200 Gig external drive.
Installed everything as per instructions and have win xp sp 2 on a dell dimension 8200 system.
While using the retrospect software that comes with the drive, my system crashes out during the back up process with an error message- delayed write failure.
Took the junk back to the store and got a seagate external 200 gig. Now I'm smiling again and love the backup software seagate provides because not only does this stuff work- it's darn user friendly. On the Maxtor, the one touch function caused the dansk software to give an error message then it would shut itself down. How Maxtor can charge a premium price for their gear is beyond me. If you don't believe me, then just google "maxtor one touch reviews and see the other complaints 9/27/04.

What a pice of crap. My first 200gb One Touch suffered a "delayed write fail", then began clicking, and suffered complete physical drive failure. 100% data loss.

I am now experiencing a similar phenomenon on my home pc, running a 250gb one touch that I bought at the same time. I knew by now that the product could not be relied upon, so didn't put anything critical on there. Yesterday, I got a "delayed write fail" message, and wasn't able to read anything on the drive. Switching the unit on off brought access to most of the files back. Nonetheless, the tech at Maxtor told me to remove the data immediately, as the delayed write error showed that the drive would soon be complete toast.

I asked him what the deal was with having two drives, on two different machines, fail within just a few months of purchase. He told me candidly that the drives were not reliable enough for critical files, and should only be used to back up data that was available elsewhere! That isn't what the package says, and I feel completely ripped off.

I am now the proud owner of $600 worth of One Touch paperweights.

I bought the 200-gig firewire/USB2 external hard drive. I can't get the one-touch button to work on my XP-home edition desktop but I think that the driver for my USB 2.0 ports are to blame (they aren't the default drivers from Microsoft that you need to make the button work).
I was getting the "Delayed Write Failure" message that other people mention but that stopped when I reset the option to idle-down after 1 hour to never idle-down.
I quit using the Retospect software and started using the backup utility that came with the XP operating system. I like it a lot more because I'm used to it.
All in all, this hard drive is pretty good for what I paid for it.
  • Alec C
Originally bought my OneTouch in October last year. Since then have had three replacements fail on me. Maxtor should be ashamed of themselves. I even managed to get one of their technical support managers to admit there was a problem. In the end I gave up and bought a Western Digital External Drive - and haven't looked back. IF ANYONE OUT THERE IS CONTEMPLATING BUYING THE MAXTOR DRIVE - DON'T.
  • Frank
Title says it all. I had no complaints about this drive until yesterday when when it started making a strange tonal noise and was not recogized by my computer. A call to Maxtor confirmed that this noise was indicitive of a drive failure. I am getting a credit from my retailer and will choose another brand. I will not get another Maxtor based on what I have experienced and what others are saying.
  • Stan
I had it 1 month and the damn thing died. It messed up my XP boot and had a list of write failures. Tech help blames inproper shut down. I did nothing but use it as it was advertised. I lost all my data!!
    Very unreliable!! Buyer Beware!!
  • Leo Yoder
I have been able to figure out how to restore complete data on the computer after it is backed up by one touch button before repair. After computer repair erased all data and programs. Computer was resored to factory specs. How does one restore from the one touch back up? Thanks,
  • KH
I transfer my files on to the 300GB drive and my could computer couldn't recognize that after i try to put he files back. Very mad about the unstability of the drive and made me loose all my files
  • Robert Whi
This is the worse software I ever experience. It does
not backup a multiple folders with one-touch method.
  • Michael
Been reading the posts on the delayed write problem on Maxtor drives. FYI, I also see the problem with my brand new SeaGate 300GB external USB drive. Could it be a Windows problem??
  • Stan
I have 5 external drives. 4 Maxtor various models and one Vantec case with WD. I had no problems till I upgraded to WinXPsp2. Does anyone else with these problems have the same issue. perhaps it is XP? I keep reimaging and the drvies keep crashing. the partition tables get corrupt.

    Any Ideas?

I had a 200GByte firewire / USB2 running on my PC on the USB2 port. Works fine. I bought a 200 GByte from Amazon for my daughter (good price) which failed in less than one week. The replacement lasted 4 days. Now getting a refund. I am now nervous about my own drive, and wondering if I need to backup my backups!
  • Mae
I bought a 200 GB Maxtor Onetouch from amazon (uk). After a breezy setup I was on my way transferring files. I managed to get about 5GBs on it, but then after about 2 hours I get a "Delayed Write Failure" error on a 250MB file mid-transfer. Since then I can only transfer files that are less than 20MB or so. After a search on the net for "Maxtor Onetouch Delayed Write Failure" and seeing the results I'm beginning to feel like I've been duped into buying a £100 paper weight.
  • bob
I have 8 drives which are under heavy use at work and a further 5 in other depts. Not a single one has had any problems at all.

I think a lot of the problems here could well be caused by mistreatment. Hard drives are quite fragile even if they are in a metal case. My friend chucks his about all over the place and wonders why they die on him.
  • Mark
    I bought a 250GB external drive (5000XT).

It has a 1 yr warranty on it. Well .. lo & behold - it is now about 13 months old and I'm starting to get the same "delayed write failure" errors that other folks have posted .. files are disappearing, processes that use the files on the drive are crashing, etc. I run chkdsk and it tells me the drive has problems.

I went out and bought a Western Digital drive to backup everything up onto, and am sure that my Maxtor is about to crash. I'll never buy another Maxtor - that is $300 of hard-earned $$ down the tubes. I would expect the product to last more than a year.
  • nweightman
I bought my Maxtor One Touch II 3 weeks ago, Since then I have had all my work disappear once, and nearly every day i have to goto Windows Disk Manager to tell it the drive exists. I'm using Windows 2000 and other than loosing my data once, and of course having to essentially map the drive once a day, i not had many problems................ It's just part of buying an expensive paper weight. I'll keep hold of it for a month, if it gets worse, it doesn't get better, i'll get my money back.
  • RPY
I bought a Maxtor 205G One Touch back in 11/2004 and exchanged it two months later in January it due to a complete drive failure as others have described here. It is now another two months and again I have a drive failure! This drive is powered on 24/7 with backups written everyday and is never moved or transported. I'll contact Maxtor and see what they will do, but after looking on the net a bit and seeing that I'm not the only one experiencing this I don't think I can ever trust this product again.
  • Y&Y
I bought a brand-new Maxtor One Touch II 300GB a few days ago. While on use, it clicks and clicks loudly. So far no error yet. My former Maxtor One Touch 300GB has worked without any noise. Is this a bad abnormal sign, or within normal limits?
  • felix
lost 3 drives in 4 months - so much lost I am broken.
Nothing to add apart from - DO NOT BUY ANY DRIVES FROM MAXTOR.
  • Frank
Bought a Maxtor One Touch Firewire drive to backup files on my Mac. After about 3 months if failed. Maxtor was not cooperative or helpful. It's make me mad to read that so many people have had the same problem. I think a class action lawsuit needs to be brought against them.
  • n./a (uk)
i won 3x 300GB one touch and 2x 250gb one touch, longest one i have owned for 2 years, not had any problems at all with any!
go maxtor, still the leader for external drives,

i also now have 1x maxtor one touch II, software much realiable and works a dream

I've got 2 of OneTouch (1st gen) drives:
    250GB (7200rpm, 8MB cache)
    300GB (5400rpm, 2MB cache)

The 300GB has started dying and probably has bad sectors within FAT-table. Running scandisk deleted the faulty directory, but not able to correct the bad sectors: trying to read the file fragments causes loud clicking from the drive and finally an I/O error reported by OS (Win XP Home). IF it were a normal IDE disk, the fault could POSSIBLY be repaired with a low lever format operation, but doing that on a drive in an USB enclosure, is impossible without opening the case and voiding the warranty. Because of of that, I am returning the drive.

While my 300GB drive never got hot in use and died anyways, my 250 gigger runs REALLY hot in 24 hour operation... and is still running (and continues to surprize me). I could probably fry eggs on the casing... ^^

First generation OneTouches do not have a fan fitted (although they actually have a slot for attaching one) so the 7200rpm versions (= all but the 300 giggers) run way too hot. Second gen possibly have a small fan fitted (and even the 300 giggers run at 7200rpm).

I do not recommend first gen drives except the 300 giggers. Yes, I've had one of them fail, but that's probably just very bad luck. The drives inside are 300GB MaxLine II. They should be reliable plus, they are the only ones running at only 5400rpm. 5400rpm does NOT cause any performance penalty over the 7200rpm ones since in most cases, the interface is a bottleneck. Drives inside 7200rpm OneTouches are either MaxLine Plus II or DiamondMax Plus 9, so the drives are not always "enterprise" quality.

Had 300 GB one touch a whole day. Software is garbage. Wouldn't install and scrabbled my computer and caused a myriad of software problems. Spent hours messing about. I now remember buying a Maxtor HD about five years ago and setup software was a nightmare to use. That is two out of two Maxtor - I'm not impressed !

Is it really too much to ask for to get something that works straight away out of the box without loads of hassle !

Is there anyone out their who can easily read the writing at the top of the first page in the Quick Start Guide ? Has anyone from Maxtor read its own manual ? Does anyone from Maxtor actually care ?

I've had more aggravation in the last four hours with this piece of garbage than I have had in the last four years with all sorts of hardware - and I reckon I'm not done with sorting out the mess Maxtor's software has left behind yet.

If you want an external drive look elsewhere. The box is fancy but the rest is cr*p.
  • rpg50
The Retrospect Express HD software that comes with this drive is very buggy. Before you install it check out the Danz user forum - lots of unhappy people there. http://forums.dantz.com/ubbthreads/index.php
You can install the Maxtor drivers without installing the Retrospect backup software (that is what I'd recommened)

Like most people said, this drive is VERY UNRELIABLE!!!! Mine died after around 2 month.
It gave out a few 'clinching' nosies & when I tried to acess it, windows froze. Upon rebooting the machine, window said that the drive was now unformatted & of course all my data & videos were gone.

The realiability of this drive was even worse than those 25cent cheap DVD-R disks I bought a year a ago and most of them are still readable now.

I found it very ironic on how Maxtor claims its external drive to be the idea solution for backing up your primary hardrive, if the drive itself fails more frequently than the primary drive.

Maxtor's new hardrives appears to be LESS reliable than their old hardrives. Mine 40Gb internal Maxtor diamond max 8 is still kicking after 2 years compared to this piece of CRAP that died within 2 month.
  • Andrew D L
Brought the device to work to transfer some files to my office machine; all worked well. Returned home to find the drive unresponsive; shows up as a Drive letter but no size is reported. Windows say there is nothing on the drive now. Not sure what is wrong at this point but I feel like this is a POS.
  • Jeremy S
I bought this drive, after six months of extremely light use the drive died (clicking & whirling noise on power up, continues ad infininum along with increased (!) heat as well). I contacted Maxtor's tech support via email, they said they'd replace it... But, with my warranty expiring next year, what if that one fails!
  • Wesley
This is the second drive I have gone through. The drive has literally been sitting around, when I went to use it, Windows will not read it anymore and drive makes funny sound. Tried 2 computers, nothing. No more maxtor for me.
  • Stu
    I lost 295 gigs after 14 months of use. 1 year warranty expired...so I'm FUCKED...never again will i buy a maxtor.
  • Scott Quin
Was working like a dream..........until it FAILED. My opinion went from great to TERRIBLE. It seems that Maxtor have really let down A LOT of people with the LOW QUALITY of this product. I AM EXTREMELY UNHAPPY!
  • Jon
I bought this piece of junk 2 weeks ago. It works like a charm, but later I hear clicking noise then poof the drive just went blank. Oncetouch now died along with my data. :(
  • Ivor
I have had two 80gb Drives and now the 300gb drive all fail at less than a Year old.
    These products are seriously flawed.
I personally would reccommend an alternative type of Backup for your data.

Wow very interesting reading the response to this drive. Looks like I have been relativley lucky.
Bought 2 new MAXTOR OneTouch II drives for a 52min film I had been working on for months. Both drives were just chocablock full of critical clips and sound files. I had only just finished the whole film and sent it off to be pressed to DVD and the very next week a drive started to act very slow. I caught on fairly fast and started shifting files as fast as I could. I only lost about 90gb of source material for the film but I'm so lucky compared to all of you poor people that no doubt lost some very personal imagery/data that this drive was supposed to store reliably.

Thiss company sucks a 300G and 250 crapped out. Never again for maxtor

After months of poor performance my One Touch 120 Gg has bitten the dust.

This this is a piece of junk and has cost me plenty in terms of file losses.

If I had the time I would shoot a lawyer at their misleading advertising.

    Its junk, don't by Maxtor!!!

T'was the middle of the night, after 20 hours on the phone with my BIGGEST-name PC manufacturer trying to fix my computer. Had to erase my HD, needed external backup, opened the sealed 120-Gig One-Touch box I had bought a year ago, loaded software, plugged it in, and ... nothing. Would not spin up. Called Maxtor next day to troubleshoot. Response: "Year-old? Sorry; out of warranty!" "But I can prove it's never been used. It doesn't DO anything." "Sorry."
I'm buying anything BUT a Maxtor tomorrow (and a custom PC next week). What good are great features without reliability or service?
  • Dave
200 gb one touch worked perfectly until the day I actually needed the backups. Then suddenly the drive is unformatted. Typical piece of junk.

I planned to purchase second 300GB drive, since my Maxtor 300 started to give clicking sounds. After checking all the feedback I will never purchase Maxtor products. Looks like I have been very lucky (one year OK), just after warranty. I have used chkdsk/f to fix several errors, always turned on disk after windows was running and turned off after windows was down. I have been runing disk quite a lot average 200hours/week.
  • Frank
Maxtor II 300 used lightly, failed after 8 months. Amazon offers money back but do I want to send back a disk carrying all my data. Anyone recommend a reliable replacement?
  • Christie W
Just bought it, installed, and set up backup feature. 2 days later screwed around and deleted an entire year of pictures and used the Restore feature the get them back. THANK GOODNESS for the Maxtor drive. It worked like a champ. Maybe it won't last - but it's already paid for itself.
  • EdwardC
Never functioned. The only good part was a full refund from vendor.
  • M L Meyer
After 12 months of my One Touch II, 300 GB working well, I began to hear soft clicking sounds. Then came total failure. Fortunately, my year's worth of photos were all backed up on DVDs. Don't trust this product.
  • Rob
My Maxtor external hard drive won't work and Best Buy wants $1,500.00 to retrieve the data.
  • Dusting Pham
Well, I owned it for a few years now, and every few months I backup my pictures... but last night when I turned it back ON, it requires me to format the drive...

Terrible product... and sure is not ONE TOUCH
  • Tom
The instruction book is difficult to understand with no definition of terminology such as new script, run script, open script; likewise, what is the difference between restore and duplicate? After a system failure, I found technical support people nearly as unfamiliar with the product as myself. Even though I have an engineering degree and have worked with computers for decades, I found the Maxtor One-Touch frustrating to use and unreliable.

I bought the Maxtor 500GB to store my work files - It worked for four months. Then access was off and on - hte powere light switch was flashing yellow - accoeding to the manual - it was a power chod issue - the next day the clicking started and then nothing - no access - no recognition of the drive. Took it Back to Best Buy - they couldn't do anything and shipped it to Seagate. They called back and said that I had dropped the hard drive - ridiculous!!
  • pacoinmass
I bought the Maxtor OneTouch III to backup my home files. Worked for 6 months before clicking noise showed up. Windows doesn't recognize it and can't access any files on it. Have spent last 60 minutes on hold. Have requested replacement drive but will never buy another Seagate (60 minutes on hold is incredibly ANNOYING) or Maxtor (product failure after 6 months?) product again.
  • Chrisjim
If the external drive is making a clicking noise or is inacessable then the enclosure circuit is probably dead. This happened to me. To retrieve the data I just removed the drive from the enclosure and installed it to my pc.

Just unscrew the enclosure to remove the drive, order up a new enclosure, and install the drive to it.
  • PatFerr
Well, I had my drive for about 5 months, and now, it just clicks and does nothing. I want to blow this thing to hell. I just need a shotgun. This PIECE OF S$$# is not worth the gunpowder it would take to blow it back into hell where it came from, and Maxtor/Seagate SUCKS. I wont buy another drive from either ever again. EVER.
  • NDo
Have had Maxtor One Touch for 2 years now and it continues to stop working - without notice. Very hard to work with and understand and VERY frustrating to have to keep reformatting it. This isn't supposed to be what a backup drive does - it is not reliable. Won't buy it again, ever!
  • Kenneth
I want to emphasize, before anything else, that my drive is working fine, for now at least.

The drive is making this very noisy whining noise which I suspect is coming from the fan. The drive is working fine, and datas inside the drive is not affected at the present time. This is the second time a Maxtor drive I owned have this kind of problem. This will be the last time I will buy a Maxtor drive. They will have to get my money from my cold, dead fingers from now on.
  • Jon Nichols
Purchased this a year ago for redundant external storage. Today it started making a clicking sound and is inaccessible. I've just read HUNDREDS of user reviews expressing grief and horror over losing everything.
  • Joe Stevens
No protective circuitry, no fuses etc. Any kind of power issue and your data is simply gone. A 12 cent fuse would do wonders to protect the logic board on the ATA drive inside of this thing.
  • Terry Lakin
I used the unit for about 2 years but then it became undetectable by all computers. Warranty was past one year, but Maxtor offered to recover my data for $700! After much trouble shooting, the HD is working fine as an internal drive in my computer. The IC/chipset in the case must have gone bad-no recognition of the USB or fire-wire connections. Maxtor was of no help and offered nothing. Read many strings about others who have had drive failures, placed another non-Maxtor HD in the case, and the onboard chips flash the HD into only recognizing a 128G HD, even if it is much higher. Quite a process for people to undue this Maxtor Sabotage. I will not buy any more Maxtor products. Maybe Seagate buying Maxtor can improve quality and service, but for now- See you later Maxtor.
  • Colin McCaffrey
Failure with no warning seems to be spinning fine but no longer recognized by either my PC or Mac. I bought this unit 19 months ago.

Called Maxtor and some woman in India informed me Maxtor will not restore the 200 GB of audio files under warranty, only replace the drive. Restoration was quoted at $1400 US.

I am about to remove from enclosure (voiding warranty) so I can put into an internal slot on my PC get the data, and then NEVER buying Seagate or Maxtor again.
  • Becky Banks
I bought this product and it has crashed 2 computers. Every computer I plug it into begins to run very slowly and then it crashes. I finally narrowed it down to this drive due to the fact that I installed the disk and began having problems with it right away. It is a bad product.
  • Gina Nelson
I had my hard drive for about 18 months and it is no longer recognized by either of my computers. They will replace it for free because it is defective, but want $1900 to give me back the data that is on it!! They admit their product is defective but I have to pay them for my data? Are they nuts? I will NEVER purchase another one of their products again and I will tell everyone I know about the scam they are running!!
  • Scott
Click, click, and click. That's the sound my 7 month old Maxtor one touch III makes as it no longer works. JUNK
  • Bertha
I had my external hard drive for 12 months and now my computer or no computer recognizes it. It is a piece of crap you pay a good amount of money to have your data personal pictures taken care of and it's just no good. Data recovery wants to charge me $1200.00 to recover data isn't that so messed up this people know that their equipment comes defective and their still selling their item I will tell everyone I know too that the brand is no good, I will never purchase another again.
  • Frank
My Maxtor died after 2 and a half months of usage. It no longer powers up. Maxtor is a piece of crap...I wouldn't refer that hard drive to anybody.
  • Frustrated
Completely agree with all the comments before me. I've had my Maxtor One Touch 4 hard drive for about 5 months and today, out of the blue, it has failed to power up. I've just wasted a good few hours trying to get it to work, but to no avail. Given the stories about the amount that they're charging to get your files back, I'm not even going to bother with the warranty. Fortunately I have my important files backed up with a reliable piece of hardware! I don't want another free one if there are so many people complaining about them being defective.

    I wouldn't recommed this product.
  • Leon
Where were these reviews when I went to buy this hard drive?? I had mine for only 7 months and it failed - click click, click click.... $1700 later and I have most of my files back, but Maxtor won't honor it's warrantee because I had it worked on by a professional lab, (other than Maxtor). AAARRRRGGGG!!!!

By the way, the actual hard drive inside was a Seagate with a Maxtor case. I will never buy another Maxtor or Seagate!
  • Richard W Taylor
I experienced early failure with my very first Maxtor One Touch III, and had it replaced by the retailer. Over a short period I accumulated a total of 5 One Touch III's, and 3 of those 5 have already failed...4 out of 6 including the first one. ("...fool me twice, shame on me!") I started using Seagate Free Agents after that and have yet to experience a failure. Go figure. Can I expect any resolution from Maxtor/Seagate for the bad One Touch III's?
  • David
I got one and after 10 months its starts to grind once switched on. The grinding would disappear, but what does that mean? Something is on the way out. I'd avoid the Maxtor products unless you've got no choice.
  • Erika
My new 750GB Maxtor One Touch died after 3mos of very light use -- first a grinding noise when I turned it on. I was stupid and turned it off -- bad luck, it would not boot up again.

I've had great luck with earlier (and smaller) Maxtor drivers, but the 750GB has no reliability.
  • bill2004
I have bought Maxtor One Touch 500G Ext HDD just a few days ago.Only it worked one time!

When I put my valuable data into the External HDD, I could not access to my data again, the shop says we can't do anything for your data but only we can change the HDD with a new one.

So I recommend if you want to buy such a garbage from Maxtor, back up your data also in another place.
  • lezlibelle
This is ridiculous. Five years of work backed up for about a year, now I can't access it. It ended up being a $250.00 metronome. Click, click, click...
