It would appear that HP got the idea for this PC form a marketing meeting, certainly not a user group. It’s all about hype and looking slick but who cares if it doesn’t add some form of functionality or improvement on the user experience. The PC still hangs up like the typical vista machine, the HP hardware is cheap and needs to be replaced right out of the box with worthwhile components, and the ‘touchscreen’, lags in response and makes you appreciate the ease of the mouse (I should say ‘good’ mouse, see note on hardware above).

Overall- a hyped up over-advertised lemon that hp will probably make a bundle on for a year or so until word spreads.

When I bought it at Staples, the salesman cautioned me to get the extended warranty. As it turned out the Hard Drive died after 2 weeks and HP is supposed to ship me a new computer. Not a reliable machine, a real time waster since I will have to set up a second one – HP may go the way of Packard Bell with this kind of quality.

Wanted a touch screen. Saw this in a flyer and wow. Wow what a rip off.

Dvd/cd rom went poof within the first month.

Took a total of 4 days and about 5 hours & 2 emails to get HP to understand that I am more than capable to install a dvd player. But had to give them a credit card as a deposit to make sure that I send back the old one. Yea what I really was going to do was put it up for sale on ebay and become a millionaire.

Now I the 2nd dvd/cd rom is dead.

Lets see how long it takes them this time.

If there was a negative rating this computer would be a -10.

Hp customer service get some people that we can understand!!!!!!

We purchased this system at Staples on sale for $1249.00 US.and we are very well pleased. The erratic mouse is my only complaint and a USB wired mouse works much better. Looks terrific! Runs terrific after slow startup. All built in hardware working fine. System in use since 09/2007.

  5. Slow starter...

I’ve had this machine since October and got it from Fry’s refurbished. It has replaced the Samsung HDTV 20″ in the kitchen..for good. I have used it a lot. I use it alot for netflix on demand viewing in the kitchen. WiFi wont work but it is wire to the home-network. Yes the windows media center sucks big time. Use media player. ALso, go online and install the Hauppauge TV tuner(the one built into the machine) software and access the tv feature from the desk top icon to not waste time on the media center slowness. Much better. The video camera was a trick for sure. I got it working now perfectly so that I can see the Kitchen from the other computers on my network. It had to do with installing an Instant messenger web cam driver or utility…and it worked right up. My machine sits on the kitchen counter, in the corner. I can mouse and keyboard from the island about 6ft -8ft away, and remote from the island or from the bar at least 15 feet away. I noticed the batteries need to be fresh. IF you have skipping and keyboard problems, open the battery cover, twirl the batteries and ouila!, fresh again. THis works for all remotes and then you chunk the batteries after they are truly dead. What else do people complain about…oh yeah. Resize the hard drive c: down to 150G or so. The remaining reformat for a backup disk. Do all restores here. GO to Maxtor and get maxblast V5.0, make a bootable CD disk and then boot the iq770 from the disk. Back up C: to the new drive and you have a fully restoreable system with all the updates. If you dont do this you will regret it soon. And set the auto back to backup everyday so a restore point is created. We like it … DVD is great and I have mine getting all the digital channels I can get here in Santa Fe, NM. I also figured out how to get my DISHnetwork working on channel 73…and I use DishRemote 2 to change channels. Not the best picutre but it works. The analog capability sucks. ALways get the latest updates…Vista that is. I’ve never seen an HP update. It games too…Not Ghost Recon however.

I bought this as soon as it came to the stores. I have had the same issues with webcam, keyboard, TV tuner etc. I quickly grew tired of the Vista OS,and HP support really made me angry when the solutions they read to me were oriented for windows XP! I have since made the machine dual boot with Ubuntu linux. The wireless lan touchscreen, and TV tuner won’t work under linux due to the lack of driver support. But everything else is fine. So for an average computer this works great, but no bells and whistles. I am terribly disappointed in the machines slowness under Vista, so when it boots up instantly under Linux I feel alot better, and more secure.

If you see this machine, walk past it and find something else, If you want a touchscreen machine, you should look into buying the overlay and doing it yourself on a far superior computer than HP’s Touchsmart line of junk.

We installed this PC as our kitchen PC & TV, and do make *some* use of the touch screen. Unfortunately the built in smart centre apps, while looking good, are really to slow for day to day use – this is our primary PC. The performance is excellent – this runs games and apps like Photoshop really well and the large widescreen makes it entirely suitable for TV & DVD’s

Keyboard and mouse are pretty awful, and the webcam seems to need a restart before each use. I’ll be keeping the machine, but getting a new keyboard and mouse.

I agree with most of the comments here regarding the keyboard, mouse, and webcam issues. I bought my unit in February of 2007. Right out of the box and to this day the webcam fails periodically for no apparent reason. I’ve had extensive communication with their tech departments to resolve this issue but to no avail. I found out I have to delete the current driver and then re-install it again for it to work. The webcam also seems to lack several features such as zoom, tracking, etc. Also unless I’m positioned very close to the unit the keyboard loses its ability to type accurately. The mouse is a bit jumpy and also must be positioned very close. Overall I like the machine and its in-house portability.

  11. Not too bad, but...

    March 3, 2008 @ 9:59 AM

The computer seems fast enough, but I am not an expert in that area. I think it is too pricy for what it is.

I thought the keyboard and mouse problem was just me. We have it up high for the TV function and the keyboard and mouse are a couple feet away. I often have problems with the mouse jumping, and the keyboard missing strokes.

Touch screen works well, picture is fine.

My main complaint is the TV tuner seems to work fine for anywhere from days to seconds then it goes to a fuzzy black and white picture for no apparent reason. Only way to get a color picture back is turn it off. A warm restart does not fix it. I upgraded the BIOS and all drivers from OEM sites.

The HP Rep said to do a total restore on the system, but I have invested hours in installing programs, music, pictures, etc.

There is also no reason to expect a restore to fix anything since the problem existed out of the box with the original system configure that I would be restoring to. The next step is to send it to HP to fix. Given the intermittent problem and possible long times of good behavior I seriously doubt they will actual fix it. Although they might think they did.

I would just buy a new tuner card, rather than send it back, but the insides are crammed and the card does not seem to be readily accessible.

It is also strange that it comes with a built in webcam, but no info on how to access it, or use it. Probably buried in help files, but you would think they would highlight it in the easy setup documentation.

I have got the HP IQ772 which is the latest of the touch smart computers with the slightly better processor, better hard drive and upgraded graphics. I agree the keyboard is not very good but I was always intending on getting a new keyboard so that did not matter. The mouse is ok but I already had a great mouse. The touch screen is brilliant and works perfectly. The computer looks neat and smart, the CD drive works great and the litescribe is brilliant.

I sometimes contact HP by email and they always reply within 24 hours and are very kind and understanding and try to help with anything they can.

I will say one thing, for the money paid the performance could be better, I don’t understand why they could not put a better processor in it. Apart from that I am pleased with the computer.

When I bought this computer I thought it would be perfect for family use, turns out I was wrong. the keyboard is horrible and randomly cuts out, the touch screen feels like a last second add-on that isn’t accurate enough to use as a mouse. But worst of all most of the hardware built into the computer isnt recognized by windows vista, like the webcam, TV tuner, and wireless adaptor (at least in my case). So I’d recommend you take that $2000 and buy yourself a quality machine.

Pity because the touch screen is excellent and it looks fantastic. Paid £899 with 2 year warranty.

    January 21, 2008 @ 10:19 AM

I’m a big fan of the compact design and the touch screen is a neat novelty. However, that being said, I would NEVER recommend this to a friend. To start with, and unfortunately I read this over and over again, the keyboard and mouse are horrible. I would include the cost of a new keyboard in mouse in the total price of the computer if you consider getting one. A second problem I had was the inexplicable crashes. There’s no warning and no seemingly consistent set of circumstances leading up to a crash. Third, and most importantly, dealing with HP support over replacing my DVD drive (it too failed) has been a nightmare. I’ve been sent two drives that don’t fit my computer and now I’ve been told that I have to send my entire computer in to have it serviced. Now you would think that it would be pretty simple to send me a DVD drive that would fit my computer wouldn’t you??? Trust me, STAY AWAY FROM THIS COMPUTER!!!

I had high hopes that the HP TouchSmart would alleviate some of my repetitive stress issues and, through its all-in-one-unit design, keep me from going back to Mac. The keyboard was a nightmare, but after three weeks of use mine would no longer power up. HP support and my dealer agreed that I got a dud, but what a horrible experience for a computer for which I was originally quite excited.

It doesn’t have legs in the back to help the typing. So I prop it up into the space under the screen.

    September 16, 2007 @ 12:04 PM

The keyboard is useless. The mouse jumps around the screen and it sometimes misses keystrokes. I replaced it with a Microsoft wireless keyboard and everything is fine now. I had to return my first IQ770 because the external monitor port was shorting out. The Media Center is slow. The ‘notes’ feature that they are so proud of isn’t worth a dime if you have to wait for the program to load. It’s easier to write a note on the fridge like the old days. The monitor is crystal clear and the touchscreen is awesome. I’ve played some good games on this computer and it works fine. All in all I’m happy with it since I only paid 1,000 for it at Fry’s. Not worth the 1,800 list price.

First off, the keyboard and mouse SUCK. It does exactly what everyone above has said. HP needs to get their act together and fix it. I’m either going to return the unit or buy a keyboard and mouse that work!

As far as the computer goes, it’s really nice. I find it quick and responsive when opening applications. It’s not worth the 1,000 dollars I paid for it (refurbished). The only time I use the touchscreen is when the mouse craps out.

Yes, the keyboard is lousy but the computer is wonderful!!! And concerning the keyboard, I got so feed up I contacted HP Support. The called me back, saying they will send me a new keyboard/mouse at a discount that would fix the problem. Only after I paid for it, I looked online and realized that he had sold me the keyboard/mouse at the price I would have paid online anyway, no discount! More then a little upset, I called HP Shopping (I was talking to a tech supervisor before), told them the situation and that I was feeling cheated. They agreed, knocked off $7 and sent me a $50 coupon for use at HP.

I recommend you try this to take care of the keyboard. Otherwise, buy a plug-in version.

  30. Good System
    Eric Burford

    By: Eric Burford
    July 5, 2007 @ 9:13 AM

I bought one of the first, and I’ve read the other reviews.

The keyboard is a little touchy; it must be quite close to the system to avoid any key skipping. Incidentally, I also have a z555 and now, after moving it to a different room, where the keyboard is quite far away from the CPU, that keyboard skips.

So I think the keyboard/mouse skipping issues people have is more about battery/strength of the keyboard signal, and their proximity to the CPU.

Setup was really easy, and I like the Touchsmart "dashboard" interface that HP has added.

Its a beautfiul addition to my office that I share with my 5 year old daughter.

I went and got a high-def cable tuner just for the PC, and then was happily surprised to see my XBOX stream HD channels to my non-Hi-Def TV set from the IQ770… Bonus!

Now I can watch MOJO and Howard Stern again where I haven’t upgraded my other TVs to Hi-DEF.

As a PC, its not super-duper fast; and if its doing a lot, it gets sluggish in general. The black-screen between Touchsmart and MediaCenter, no biggie for me.

For what I use it for, general browsing, email, my 5year old daughters games, watching and streaming TV shows, its great.

And its such a great form factor. I really like it.

I wish the keyboard had built-in feet to raise it up at the back, but I guess they were removed to make hiding the keyboard under the CPU easier and less likely to jam. A low-tech solution to raising the keyboard could be some sort of support to place the keyboard upon the desk, when I’m using it.

Back to my daughter’s games; she’s 5 and went from the mouse to the touchscreen without any pause, or hesitancy. Its amazing how quickly young people take to new technology.

If you’re looking for a VOODOO PC, get a VOODOO PC, but if you want a stylish PC, revolutionary form factor, that looks really cool, does well with most apps, and adds a new interface such as touchscreen and the HP Touchsmart applications, go for it.

So its $1800, heck… I like it and I’m very glad I have it. But I am a gadget freak afterall.

  31. Useless Keyboard and mouse
    Ben

    By: Ben
    May 15, 2007 @ 8:47 AM

I bought my IQ770 2 weeks ago and I already regret it! The keyboard and mouse are absolutely useless as mentioned by others as well. It skips letters constantly and the mouse makes the cursor jump all over the screen. In fact it appears to be some issues with processing the signals from the mouse and keyboard as the skipping issue is worse if CPU and hard drive activity is higher. In addition to this the PC seems to struggle with everything. Switching users is incredibly slow so is entering or leaving media center. The screen goes black for several seconds before anything happens. WiFi drivers needs fixing. Preinstalled drivers completely useless could not connect at all. After updating drivers could connect, but only if SSID broadcast is enabled on the wireless router. Do not buy this computer!

The keyboard is TERRIBLE!!!! It eats batteries faster than anything I have ever owned… HP should give you 280 AAA batteries (4 per week) per year. No task is easy when you have to carefully check everything because of letters not working or double printing. I would never recommend this PC because time is valuable to me and I don’t have time to deal with an inadequate keyboard…..

    Bruce Fireman

    By: Bruce Fireman
    April 4, 2007 @ 2:33 AM

This is a good piece of kit but it is let down by the keyboard and mouse. The keyboard skips letters – particularly it seems r, t and u, and repeats letters, even though I have adjusted the properties to “slow” – and the mouse skips all over the place. I am going to have to replace them, which I fear means more wires and cables cluttering up the desk (oh dear a missing r in cluttering).

I’m not entirely sure how useful the touch screen will really be in practice. I hardly use it, but then I’ve mainly be using the machine for spread sheeting and writing.

It will be interesting to see whether the reseller will supply a different key board and mouse without charge. I live in he UK and our consumer protection laws are such that I could reject he (here we go again) reject the whole lot.

This all-in-one would have been perfect if it had a Intel dual-core processor instead of a slow pokey AMD.

I’ll wait and hopefully HP will do it right next time.

I agree that it’s not as good looking as the iMac, but it’s super powerful. HP is notorious for adding updated models a few months apart, so you might want to wait till this goes on sale ($1800 seems spendy to me). Otherwise it’s a great system, I can’t wait to get one for the family when more are available (sold out at my local Best Buy).

Bought one of these for the family and we absolutely love it. If you are a tech head like me you will like that its fast and powerful and handles anything you throw at it. Plus everyone who sees it thinks the ThinkSmart is cool.
