  1. Great device

I have had mine for over a year with no problems. I agree with Scott’s comments above. If you change RAID modes, you need to first backup your data and then restore it after you reconfigure. Comments about passwords and USB are the operating system’s issues, not the device.

  2. Much better than the Western Digital Raid drive

This is the best external hard drive I’ve owned. I’m using the Raid 0 mode to backup three drives inside my Mac Pro. Using Time Machine with this drive is as seamless as current technology makes possible. I plan to buy another of these for my home system.

  3. Good device

So far so good with this drive, set up in Raid 1. Out of the box it was set to what appeared to be RAID 1, but the little circular screw mechanism wasn’t engaged, so in Disk Utility (OS X 10.5) it just appeared to be in JBOD form. Once I’d figured out that the hardware RAID setting was wrong, I turned it off, moved the mechanism on the back to RAID 1, and turned it back on. Then Disk Utility reported it as half the previously stated size and I knew we were in business. I then partitioned it in GUID (therefore bootable for Intel Macs) with three partitions of varying sizes and haven’t had a problem since.

  4. Raid selection wheel - bad

Just bought this and can only get two modes JBOD and Fast after two hours of trying to get the stupid little dial to line up just perfectly. I finally gave up and used JBOD and software raid from the Mac OS. Not good.

  5. This LaCie Failed

After 6 months of use, this drive began to fail. Not a quick death mind you but a slowly over the 5th to 6th month of low usage. Just when we would think it had finally crashed, back it would come. No error messages, just failure to power up or stayed powered up.

Give it one star for its worth as a doorstop.

  6. Beware of misleading reviews!

Admin passwords? Reformat? Obviously the people complaining about these things know zero about hard drives and instead of giving themselves low marks for knowledge, they blame it on the product! Clearly, the reviews like these are a good example of why online review ratings can’t be trusted.

I’ve found this unit exemplary in every respect. Beautifully made, easily operated and, so far, very reliable. No problems whatsoever.

  7. I'm sorry but these "User Reviews" are silly

First of all, of course you have to reformat your disks if you switch RAID modes. That’s true of any RAID hardware.

This device doesn’t have an “admin password”. Storage devices don’t have passwords. They don’t understand passwords. They understand one thing: reading and writing to blocks. If you’ve somehow managed to set a password to allow access to a block storage device, it’s your computer’s Operating System that’s doing it, not the device. Passwords on your own OS are your own problem. It should also be said that the manual for this device does not contain the word “password” anywhere, that’s a hint.

  8. Not a helpful review

Flashing LEDs are neato and all, but let’s dig a little deeper, shall we?

I’m on a Mac. In spite of being sold at the Apple store, LaCie’s manual and online support are totally inadequate. Switching RAID modes is not as smooth as this review and said manual say. Apparently I have to reformat using Disk Utilities? It’s unclear and the manual doesn’t help. Also, the unit gets very hot if it’s not in open air so watch out if you’re keeping it any type of enclosed space.

  9. Windows can't install driver

Got this thing (purchased by my IS department) … and “found new hardware” can’t ever successfully install the USB device. Spent forever on the website trying to find an answer … tried to file a request, got sent to register (which I would have done later …ugh) and then lost all the request info … had to file it again. I’ve lost 3 hours of work because of lousy documentation.

  10. Returned for faulty power switch

I got my LaCie 2big Triple 2 TB drive on the Saturday before Christmas. Right out of the box I had problems with the LaCie Utilities disk. The disk was defective or blank. I got over that OK by downloading the instructions from the LACIE web site. Then I had difficulty with the RAID switch. I set it to RAID 1 and turned it on. Then I noticed the 3 position power switch only had 1 position ON-ON & ON. I called LaCie Tech support on the 25 & 26 and sent it back to B&H Photo on the 27th. I will wait get a raid drive that comes complete with all its parts working. I am disappointed because it was very a very quiet running drive but my information is too important to trust to a device that has issues right out of the box.

  11. Not useful device once you forgot your Admin Password
    Dan

    By: Dan
    December 28, 2007 @ 4:27 PM

This device cannot be reset to a default password if you forgot what you have set for your Admin password. Even worse, the system may accidentally change the password for you. The only way can reset the password is sending it back to the customer service according to the customer service.

Not a good design. I am going to ask for refund.
