  1. LaCie drives don't last

We have used numerous LaCie external HD’s and they usually last about a year max. Currently we have 2 of them attached to our server. One has died and the light just flashes, the other works but recently has problems when we copy large files to it or from it. The previous pair of LaCie drives died due to the power supplies burning out, prior to that, we have had older LaCie drives that have died and we have removed the disks and used them without the LaCie components. We have not been able to get support as they are supplied via several people in our supply chain and it is just too hard to track where they originated.

  2. Nice unit, but no front power button

I have three of these. One a working drive, one an onsite backup, and one an offsite backup. Hopefully this should take care of the extra risk associated with using a raid 0 drive. I get consistant read/write speeds of about 46 MB/s.

The only problem I have is that I can’t seem to use the “shortcut button” as a simple on off switch. I find this very inconvenient – I don’t need to launch an application with one touch of a button (I can double click just fine) but it is nice to be able to turn the drive on and off without having to reach around to the back. All earlier LaCie drives you could turn on and off via the blue button on front.
