The WRT310N has a poor installation Guide and CD. It would have been better for me if it had come with no instructions at all. For instance the guide doesn’t tell you why or what the cd does, it just has instructions saying, “put the cd in your machine”. Since I don’t understand why one would need to install software on a computer in order to get a router running, and not wanting a bunch of junk installed on my machine, I tried installing on a Windows 2000 machine. It turns out, the software wouldn’t work. I finally configured the router manually after googling for info on it.

The router at first seems to do everything one would expect, but it turns out, it needs to be restarted every couple days. I run a couple small websites on my network and occasionally download files using p2p bittorrent. The WRT310N couldn’t keep up even with that modest traffic and would lock up. I have since taken it out of service as my network gateway and use it simply as a gigabit hub on two machines that transfer a lot of data between each other locally.

When browsing the internet through the WRT310N, there seems to be more initial latency – apparent slowness in loading a page – than when I browse through an old RT31P2 router. With regard to wireless, casually testing distance with my HP Pavillion notebook, I get a better range from my old WRT54G.

So, as you can probably guess, I’m unimpressed, and searching for another router to do the job this one was supposed to do. It won’t be a LinkSys. I get the impression their R&D money is spent largely on how to produce a product cheaply, rather than on the design of a competent router.
