I bought it and found out before I used it, it’s only with 148.6 GB and feel quite cheated, but overall, satisfied with the function wise though with pros and cons.

Someone above stated that the drive requires both USB cables to power the unit. This is not true in most cases. The extra USB cable connection is for those individuals who have older computers that do not supply 5 volts DC. Some USB ports on laptop computers do not supply enough voltage, but most ports do. There, now go out and buy one of these drives, it’s excellent quality.

I have just bought a OneTouch 4 Mini from Maxtor in a store and I am not happy at all with it: 1) the big label on the package says 160Gb, but it is not binary GB, so I end up seeing only 149 GB on my computer (there is only a small definition in tiny characters at the bottom of the package), 2) I chose it also because it was supposed to be powered only by the USB cord. Again when I got home I discovered it needed 2 USB connections on the computer (and there is absolutely no note about this requirement anywhere on the package). As I may soon buy a new laptop, I have already checked the spec. of several of them: many have only 3 USB port. Once you connect this external hard drive and a mouse you’re stuck! Conclusion, for me it is pure thief from Maxtor!

    Michael,

That’s a good point. I don’t use Outlook or any pop mail so I didn’t think about that. I’m looking at the external version now and will take that into consideration. Thanks for the comments.

  5. Backup software useless to me

The older version of the backup software worked fine. You could set it to back up whatever files you wanted. They have crippled the user interface deliberately to not show the Documents and Settings Folder and the Program Files folder. Why on earth would I NOT want to back up my email? Great drive. Rotten software.

Went to Office Depot today to buy another USB 2.0 cable (left mine at home) and found that the Maxtor Onetouch 4 mini does not work with a normal USB 2.0 cable, not sure why.

    1. Will not store and confirm custom backup settings, reverts to the “default” backup which only backs up the “my documents” folder.

    2. PC crashes (blue screen and reboots) when attempting to use the Drive Pass password protection.

    3. Backup-Now command does not respond.

I have an older Maxtor II mini and did not experience so many problems.

I just upgraded and love it, I wish it had a firewire connection, but maybe in the future.
