I have had this phone for a little less then a year now. The phone constantly turns itself off and then back on again. I have had to replace it once and I have had this same problem with both of the phones. I would not suggest getting this phone…it is very unreliable!

Text messaging
By: megan
March 11, 2009 @ 10:18 AM41pam3>
I have had this phone for less then 2 months. I was receiving “net alerts” since i bought it and figured they were Nextel trying to sell me more service or something. Come to find out those were all text messages from other people who do not have Nextel as a service provider. I am only recieving texts from other Nextel users. Took it to the store to see if they could fix it, they said it must be a software problem and ordered me a new model since I had the insurance. A week later I got the new model, and guess what? It still only recieves Nextel text messages!! Have called customer service and was forwarded through three levels of sorry we can’t do anything but get you the same model… which I have now gone through two and it is horrible for texting period! Was also forwarded to tech support and am still waiting for an engineer to call me back.
Still have not recieved a straight anwser on wether or not it is a problem with the phone or with the network, have been given both anwsers by several reps.
VERY unsatisfied with Nextel customer service on the phone, as they told me if i wanted to change models I had to pay full price! But the rep at the store has done all she can to help me and is very undertanding with my frustrations.
DO NOT BUY THIS PHONE unless you want a bunch of headaches and the company takes NO responsibility and does not care!!

I have had this phone for about 8 months now, and have had it replaced about 6 times. First, the phone would just turn off and back on when I was typing a long text message. Then sometimes the screen would fade out and turn off. Then my backlight went out so I had to read it with a flashlight untill I got a new one. Now, when I open it my screen sometimes stays black. I just had the display replaced the other day with a “UPGRADED” display and it still does the same thing. I would not buy this sorry excuse for a phone. Although, when I called nextel this last time, they seemed very happy to do anything they could for me. I got a 200.00 credit on my bill and was told to go to a Nextel agent and get a new phone. so my advice if you have one of these, call and complain alot. My guy was nice right off the bat, so I didn’t get that fired up with him, but you may have to get rude and mad if you get a different one! IT works though!!!

Do Not Buy!

The owners manual needs to be rewritten as it doesn’t provide information on how to use the MP3 player.
But to top it off, I had this phone for 6 weeks when all of a sudden out of no where the internal glass in my screen cracked. I didn’t drop it or anything. It sat on my counter and when I picked it up it was broken. The outside glass was fine, not chipped or anything. I brought it to the Sprint store and had 2 other people in the store at the same time with the same model with the same issue.
I didn’t have insurance and after spending $190 for the phone they wanted me to spend another $99 to get it fixed as they were saying it wasn’t a manufacturer defect. This is hogwash! How could the inside glass break but yet the outside glass look and feel fine if I broke it? How can 3 people be in 1 small store with the same issue on the same phone.. There is flaws in this design and they do not want to warranty it. The next step is attorney generals office. Anyone else had this issue?

standard equipment (Calculator, Alarm, etc, not included

This is a nice phone but the instruction manual doesn’t cover much. Also, there is no built in calculator or alarm clock that all phones I’ve had in the past have had as standard equipment. Sprint charges a monthly fee for these add ons.

i880 Has an Alarm Clock in the Datebook
By: Nate
March 18, 2008 @ 12:08 PM41ppm3>
I bought 2 of these phones. I have used Nextel and Motorola phones for over 5 years. I like the large screen and buttons. Yes, in some instances you can hear hissing and clicking when calling someone but it happens when there are few bars. Camera and Videos work fine. It’s not rugged design like the i580 or i335 which are excellent phones. I like the push button open feature. There is a headphone jack and Bluetooth. I’m still looking for the calculator but someone on this review list said you have to download the ‘ppl’ whatever that means.
I purchased the insurance for $7 extra per month includes full replacement and internal parts.
I have been with Nextel/Sprint and have no complaints except maybe the hassle of calling customer service and dealing with reps that do not care about my call, in general.
I recommend this phone. You should get the insurance its only $7 bucks.
Oh ya, if you cannot take care of it then you might want to consider the rugged design phones and get the insurance. I don’t see any problems in the future if there are I have the insurance. If you don’t like your phone because it has problems the thing to do is email, call, and or write the Nextel/Sprint managers and supervisors and let your complaint be heard until you are satisfied. Complaints placed here on a review list do not get the attention of Nextel/Sprint powers that be. Please write and call the Nextel/Sprint managers and supervisors and executives for the service you deserve. There are thousands of phones on the market. Which of the phones should you get the insurance? On the one you’re using. You can always cancel the insurance. You can always sell your phone on EBay, and try Verizon or Alltel or ATT. Good Luck.

Upside down screen
By: Rachel
March 12, 2008 @ 12:20 PM07ppm3>
I’ve had my i880 for a while now and haven’t had any problems until recently. When you open it, the screen is upside down. The frequency of this only gets worse. I’ve also had it go completely white. It’s driving me crazy. Just thought I’d add my 2 cents about this in case someone is researching getting this phone. It’s an awesome phone if it weren’t for the glitches!

BEWARE PHONE WENT ON FIRE
By: Donna
February 26, 2008 @ 11:01 AM49pam2>
BEWARE, I brought this phone last year and had to replace it 6 times already. The screen flips upside down and then the phone screen blacks out also sometimes the ear speaker blows out as well. I just got one brand new out the box this time I was charging the phone and it went on fire. I only had the phone for two weeks. Thank god I was not sleeping or this could have caused my house to go on fire. If you are thinking about getting this model I do not recommend it because if it isn’t one thing it’s another with this phone.

Upside down much?
By: Kevin
February 18, 2008 @ 9:30 AM10pam2>
Although it’s a pretty sick looking phone, it’s been nothing but problems since I got it. I’ve had this phone for about 3 months now; shortly after the first month, the screen would be upside down upon opening it every once in awhile. Then the problem gradually got worse. Not only is the inside screen upside down 90% of the time, but the external will artifact until it is completely white. The inside screen is also prone to red discoloration that can be downright annoying. The memory card slot is prone to problems as well. A brand new SanDisk microSD will not be read correctly 50% of the time. I’ve gone to a few Nextel tech centers, and have been told these are all extremely common problems. I’ve already gone through two i870s for various problems, and I can’t see how Motorola is able to release these expensive phones with so many defects that run rampant. It would be best to save money for an i580 or similar rugged phone.

January 14, 2008 @ 4:43 PM37ppm1>
I have never had more problems with a phone in my life!! The backlight doesn’t work most of the time, it turns off on its own and I can’t get it back on. When for some reason I get the phone on I have to push the power button for 30 seconds, stop, push it again, stop, push it again and then it might work. The light for the keys works when it wants to so if it’s dark you’re basically just out of luck. DO NOT BUY THIS PHONE!!!! I have called support and they tell me there is nothing they can do for me they try resetting it and nothing works.

Plain and simple the phone sucks. The phone turns on and off on its own. The phone also makes a strange cracking noise at times. Sometimes when I am on the phone, I have to hold down the call button because sometimes it will hang up. There are times when I try to use it and I can’t cause the phone freezes. I am waiting to get some extra cash so I can get a new phone!!!

Backlight problems
By: Ryan Kinney
December 16, 2007 @ 12:14 PM55ppm12>
Motorola is going to have to discontinue the phone and send the newer model through warranty repair. It is pathetic that you can get the stupid free phone and never have a problem but when you spend tons of money (on the i880) you can’t even use it for a month without having to discontinue the use of the push to open feature due to the backlight not working. If you open it halfway, it will light up and come on, but on mine when the phone is left stationery, the backlight doesn’t fade, it turns into a white screen; when you press a button, it goes back to normal.
If motorola doesn’t send a newer model, I would advise you to buy insurance and wait until the phone is discontinued, because the insurance company sends the newer model when the phone has been discontinued, it has happened to me before.
The new model will probably do no good except for a new warranty period, as motorola has shown no signs of releasing a powerful phone that is in any way dependable!!!

Not user friendly. If you press the power button too long it sends it into Transmitters off mode…..to undo it you have to go deep within the menu to fix. I don’t even know why you would want your transmitter off in the first place. Screen went out 2 months after purchase. I am on a 7 dollar per month warranty thing where I can get it replaced….went to service center about screen that went blank and they are repairing. They don’t stock parts they now have to send it off for repair. I have one of the most expensive phones available and I can’t get good replacement service COME ON????

I have had nothing but problems since day one with this phone!! It turns off on it’s own, turns on and says transmitters off so you can’t use. Then it will just turn off in the middle of a conversation and turn back on and you can’t use it because it’ll turn off again. Reception is AWFUL! I live in a large city and most of the time I don’t have service at all or not much.

Problems with phone
By: brandy
August 31, 2007 @ 9:24 AM49pam8>
Hello, I have had this phone seven months. Like many of you the phone has lots of problems. When you flip open the phone there is no back light. In order to use the phone I must open the phone half way. When I open the phone half way every thing is upside down. I too was told to remove then replace the battery. It still did not work. I also get a message that the transmitter is off?? I did not purchase the insurance because I had my i860 for years without a problem. Now I am told to send this i880 phone in and I should get it back in two to three days. Can something be done about such an expensive phone with these problems?

I hate this phone. I am now going on my third one on 4 months. It keeps developing a problem that when I open the phone half way the backlight comes on, but when opened all the way it goes off and you cant use the screen. Every time I send it in I have to wait 5-7 business days.

I have had more problems in the 4months that I have had this phone then with any other phone I have ever had. Screen drops out, turns upside down, takes forever to download text messages if it downloads then at all. Transmitter shuts off by itself; phone shuts off by itself. Can’t use a MAC to load music and always has a problem sending pictures. This phone SUCKS!! Its highly over rated. The amount of text and the insurance has nothing to do with the quality of the phone. And yea, it has no darn calculator!! I’ll give it a 1 because it does ring.
