Great Camera

I tried Canon. This little Nikon produces much sharper and much contrastier images. I love it. You buy Nikon because of the glass. They are an optics company, not a copier company. Why 6 megapixels? I’ll trade m-pixels for dynamic range, low noise, and high flash sinc any day. This camera is great.

Great camera for beginner.

I’ve never owned an SLR in my life. However after several recent disappointing photographs taken with a digital point and shoot I made the plunge.
I did a LOT of reading before purchasing. I wanted something simple enough to learn on that wouldn’t break the bank when it came to lenses. What tipped it for me was Nikon’s VR class of lenses. I almost immediately purchased the AF-S 70-300mm lens and wow! I’m an amateur photographer trying to learn the basics but I have never in my life taken pictures this brilliant and focused before! This is a fantastic beginner SLR.

I bought this camera expecting a lot from the Nikon brand. Rather new to the photography world and read that this was a good beginners camera. What I did not realize was the amazing quality of photos and ease of use. I’m absolutely amazed by this camera and wish I had more opportunities to use it. I totally reccommend this to my friends and family; as well as anyone who asks about it. I own several other point and shoot digitals and this one far outweighs them all combined.

Replaced Canon XTI with D40

I was a tough decision, but I wasn’t happy with the performance of the XTI. The images often (as noted by dpreview) were underexposed, and focusing and metering were problematic. Even with good ‘L’ glass, I found image detail was too soft for my tastes. I purchased the D40 as a backup to my D200 and I must say images from this camera are impressive with better detail, spot on exposure and very quick focusing (even with 3 points, the focus is fast enough for sports photography). The build is solid, excellent ergonomics (Canon take a note here) and of course the camera is compact.

Overrated

I had this camera for a few weeks. I think the Nikon name is pretty overrated, you could save money getting a Canon which IMO produces better camera’s. The D40 isn’t bad, picture quality is good like the review says, but it just doesn’t have the advanced options you would want.
