I bought this external unit in early 2004 primarily for computer backup purposes – as I do a lot of client work and often need to unload Gyg’s of data when a project is over.

My unit came with a convulted ULEAD DVD bundle that Installs every video recording product they make – no option to choose what component I wanted. I had to manually remove all the video products once installed. It did come with Nero Express – which is gawd-awful after using the Roxio products for so long. And speaking of long – it would never support super-long filename/folders. Finally found a shareware program that supported burning files on DVD media

The pre-packaged software reset my computer as well. Not just Roxio, but the drivers as well. The DVD burner is slow…has never quite gotten up to speed, and burns DVD’s that will not play in anything else. By the time I finally got the whole contraption to play DVD’s, I noticed that sound would not play on any DVD. The DVD tray also has a bad (REALLY BAD) habit of falling out, when you eject a disk. Pioneer has made another inferior DVD reading device.

I got Pinnacle bundled with mine and it’s a nice bit of software. If Roxio is crashing your system, then it’s a system prob. Roxio is the industry standard pre-installed software for most machines.

The Roxio software supplied with it bluescreens my system – took half a day to recover. Run the other way.

I never had any truble using 8X dvd-r for burning. On the contrary I never knew it can write on ‘+’ format!

The drive works well, except with only 2x -RW it will soon be troublesome to find suitable -RW media on the shelf.
I was in a large electronics department store the other day and the only brand name -RW media on the shelf was 4x, which this drive doesn’t support. At the same time they had sold out of 4x +RW media. So I was stuck.
You would be crazy to buy this drive, when 16x units are not that much more expensive.
