It was working fine but now it won’t burn any DVDs or even recognize a disc in the drive! Had it for about 2 yrs.

Died in 4 months, stopped being able to read and media. Plextor was easy to work with for an RMA. They no longer repair so I was sent out a replacment in a little over a week from the time it left my hands to the time the replacment arrived. I wish I knew what the failure rate was. It worked well before, here’s hoping the replacement is solid.

    Hi Steve,

We moved your last comment to the forums since it was not a review of the drive, but comments on the review. We would love to talk with you more about the drive. Here is the forum thread: http://forums.designtechnica.com/showthread.php?s=&postid=19192

  4. Are we talking about the same drive???

I have had the 504A for about a month- got it on sale at Best Buy with $50 rebate. This is my third DVD writer (previous was Pioneer A04). This drive is superior to that one in every respect. I have burned many DVDs – no coasters (read ZERO) and average completion time around 12-13 minutes. And yes – I multitask while burning. So quiet I have to look at the lights to make sure it is working. Unlike the reviewer, I have NEVER been “disappointed” with Plextor products and this burner is one of the best purchases I have made in quite a long time. Don’t always rely on self-proclaimed experts to tell you which products they endorse/recommend. Talk to real people who actually use the products – read the forums – use Google. I had to respond to this review because I consider it a disservice to consumers and Plextor alike. P.S. – I do not work for Plextor or any computer-related business.

  5. Do not use with RAID array

I have a LEVEL 5 U160 RAID array on my computer and it won’t burn CD-R’s. Just DVD+R(W)s. After a long protracted troubleshooting process with Plextor tech support including reloading of the OS with minimal devices and rebuilding my computer without the RAID array, we finally figured out it has something to do with SCSI not allowing the PX-504A to prioritize on the system correctly. At least, that’s the explanation they gave me. Since the RAID array is the primary boot device for my computer, I ended up having to remove the PX-504A from my computer. If anyone knows of a brand that has a DVD+RW drive that will work correctly on a system with a RAID array, please let me know.

  6. Solid, reliable, quality DVD+RW drive

I’ve had the PX-504a for over 2 weeks now and burned about 15 DVD’s on various types of media with a number of burning packages including Nero, Pinnacle Instant Copy and CopytoDVD.
The drive has been nothing but fast and reliable–not one DVD coaster. It’s also not a bad CD burner coming from my 12x Plextor.
If you have a buffer-underrun, you must be doing something wrong with the hardware configuration of your PC or have some other type of conflict.
This drive lives up to the Plextor reputation as far as I’m concerned.

I forgot to mention that this drive was priced $120 less than the pioneer A05 (the other drive I was considering).

The first thing I did with this drive is burn my Ghost backup that is 4.2 GB in size. It took 13minutes to complete the burn. I would say that is pretty reasonable.

I did burn an audio CD and, although I chose to burn at the max 16x, the drive topped out at 13x.

My main focus for purchasing the drive is backing up data and drive images. As long as it keeps churing them out within 15 minutes, I am going to be happy.

I can’t wait for the media prices to drop.

There is a reason why there are not many awards on this product. Most reviews on the net have been average. And this product DOES NOT come with a DVD+RW disc, I bought this drive and then returned it for the TDK one. Plextor has dissapointed me.

  10. Fail proof drive

I agree with the other person who said that it works fine. I have a unfortunate accident that I have with the drive, instead of being in DMA 2 it was on PIO mode (program input / output) and the drive write down a dvd+r that it was suppose to be at 2.4x it works at 1x (impossible but true the dvd+r was fine but it take 45 min to finish). The buffer marker was form 89 to 7 and the light was blinking but it show to work all the way. Even I record some cd-rs after that (proveing that the drive can handle such pressure and not deliver a buffer overrun error) in that time I got aware of the problem that it something wrong the cds where recorded at 9x with Nero until I check all the reasons to the strange behavior of the drive. Is true that in this business all is not good at the first time but knowing that you can judge the book by his cover the plextor px-50a DVD+RW drive disserves a better review. That is my opinion.

  11. Plextor PX-504A DVD+RW

I don’t agree with this review at all. I have the plextor now for over a month and I have not been able to produce 1 coaster.. I’ve already burned dozens and dozens of DVD’s and not one problem. Smooth, fast and and I have not had a burn fail yet on them, even if I TRY and bomb the buffer while burning. (and various other ways of applying application torture)
This burner rocks! Also I had a +r and a +rw in the box (verbatim)… All together this is one of the best burners around at the moment!
