This is the worst television I have ever purchased. If you ever need a TV, do not buy AN RCA . I did and it will be the last RCA I ever buy!

Three lamps in three years is too much and a piss poor company to try and deal with. Very, very poor customer relations!!!!!

We have had the RCA Scenium 44″ HDTV with DLP since September 2005, purchased it for $2,390.00 and we have spent $923.00 on it for lamps and color wheel. We also have been without use of the TV for about 5 monthe during this time, because of parts not being available. I have called RCA many times, and they do not care about money wasted on their product or parts not being available. The only way we will get any satisfaction is to spread the word about RCA and the poor quality of their TV’s.

I purchased this 50 inch DLP 3 years ago. The lamp went out when I replaced it, 3 months later it just died on me first TV I ever owned that only lasted 3yr 3mo. The warranty from Walmart was extended but didn’t cover any of this. I just ate $2,000.00 on this TV. DO NOT BUY THIS TV.

I’ve had my RCA Scenium HDLP50W151 DLP HDTV for over 3 years now and have gotten a great deal of enjoyment out of it. Great picture! But if you buy one I would HIGHLY recommend purchasing an extended warranty! I paid about $2,200 for mine back around 2006. The covered warranty repairs amounted to about $1,800! I’ve had to replace the color wheel once (bearing wore out and became noisy), the lamp twice and just about all the other components in the TV. My warranty expired in Feb of 2009 and I’m keeping my fingers crossed that all the replaced parts will hold up for years to come.

  7. Overall RCA experience

I would just like to thank RCA for giving me and my family the opportunity to go through the new year without a television. When making $1000 investment, I would hope that the seller would be faithful enough to stand behind what they sell. Unfortunately, this is not the case with RCA. After spending many minutes on the phone with a very disrespectful “manager”, we were basically informed that even though the lamps in the dlp televisions go out quite often, but they (rca service center) do not keep the shotty parts in stock. If it were me, like another company we recently had an experience with, i would not only make sure the customer got what was originally guaranteed, but make ever effort to do so at the customers convienience. RCA failed miserably with this. So, not only do they sale defective merchandise, they also put forth little effort to fix their problems and satisfy the customer leaving nothing but sorrow for ever even considering purchasing one of their products….dont buy RCA…thanks

Here’s my situation. I bought this TV is Sept 2006 and in Feb 2007 and it caught fire, yup there were flames shooting out the sides! It took a full month before that got fixed. Then in September 2007 the damn thing blew again and once more I had no TV for a month. And here we are in Aug 2008 and guess what – it blew again! So I am in week one of the wait and fighting to have this piece replaced instead of fixed. For anyone out there looking for a new TV DO NOT buy RCA and by all means I suggest you don’t buy from the Brick – their warranty service is an absolute JOKE!!!!

We purchased a RCA 50 inch DLP in Jan 2007 and in July 2008 it died. We had sound but picture was white with gray spots/black lines. Service center said it is the light engine which cost $1300.00 to rebuild the crappy light engine……. no way!! Made several calls to RCA but got NO assistance since one year warranty had passed. Customer care sucks!!! We will never purchase RCA again and told them this and that we were going to spread the word so here it is… Never buy RCA anything!!!!!!!

After reading the reviews I pulled out the lamp from my RCA SCENIUM only to find out that it is blown just like the reviews I just read. I guess it would be foolish to by a bulb that is most likely to blow out within a very unreasonable time. Thanks for the warning. RCA you need to take care of your customers. You have pocketed money for a product that is defective. Have fun on your vacation because I’ll never support you by buying an RCA product again.

Like another reviewer here, I’ve owned my RCA Scenium for 3 years and I have sporadic problems with this TV. It has a GREAT picture, especially with HD content, but it was in the shop on and off throughout the first year I owned it. The repair shop replaced the lamps during one of the many visits, and sometimes the TV STILL struggles to turn on… and it flashes its front panel lights telling me I need to replace the lamps again. After several minutes of the hard drive trying to turn the lamps on, the lamps and TV eventually turn on. Very frustrating. Also, I never noticed the high pitched hard drive/fan noise until I read the post here, but now I hear it all the time. I won’t by RCA again.

Since we bought this TV it has been nothing but trouble. We have had it for 2 years now and the bulb has gone twice. $681.00 to replace. I don’t think so. RCA told us there was only one year warranty on bulbs. What a crock! When we bought the TV, we were told it was $30.00 to replace bulb. yeah right! I don’t recommend this TV to anyone and will never buy an RCA product again.

  18. Best bang for my buck I've ever spent
    Future_Shark

    By: Future_Shark
    May 2, 2007 @ 1:01 PM

Well, my situation is a little different than most. I bought this TV a little under a year ago (August 06) and am probably the very last person to buy this TV from an actual retail store (Future Shop in Ontario, Canada). This TV had just come back from repair, and physically wasn’t perfect. My understanding of the repair was that some sparks flew and they replaced the circuit boards. I came into the store at the right time, because when I approached the sales staff they were all scratching their heads wondering what to do with it. It turns out, the bulbs for this TV, now that it’s out of production, can cost anywhere from 700-900 dollars Canadian (I don’t know that to be true, never looked it up) and since it’s back from repair it’s a tough sell. I offered them 400 dollars taxes (in Canadian, mind you) to take it off their hands, and after some discussion they decided to let this nightmare walk away from them on the grounds that outside their regular 30 day return policy I can’t come back to them (no extender warranty). Fair enough, I suppose. So I take it home and I call RCA. For whatever reason RCA offered me a free 2 year warranty, INCLUDING THE BULB, and that basically tells me that no matter what this 4 thousand dollar TV that I got for 400 dollars I’m going to get to keep for the 2 years at least. Sounds like a great deal to me!

Now I have to say this the best 400 dollars I’ve ever spent IN MY LIFE ON ANYTHING. I’m doing component video switching from an LG HD DVR, a Bell Expressvu box, and an XBox 360. The progressive scan DVDs look pretty good, but compared with how far rear projection has come since then with LCoS, higher end LCD projectors like the XBR, SXRD, and others, it is not amazing. The XBox looks phenomenal (which I also recently purchased the XBox HD DVD player, which so far is the BEST thing I’ve had on it. Rent The Hulk, whether you like the movie or not, and the Nine Inch Nails DVD is incredible!) The color is fantastic, but I do agree with earlier reviewers that the blacks could be a little better, but to be fair, there’s a lot of DLP TVs available now whose blacks are no better and it’s now like 4 years later.

Now time for the bad. It is INCREDIBLY loud while running. But in my case, not the speaker like earlier reviewers said because I don’t use the TVs speakers but a separate Harman Kardon/Polk Audio surround sound system. My guess is that it’s the fan making all the noise, but it’s possible that it’s something separate altogether. I think I’ll wait till something REALLY goes wrong before I bother with a service call just in case it ends up costing me something (keep in mind, I paid 400 dollars, there’s no point in putting any extra into it unless it REALLY makes sense to do so.) Today I am getting a new video card put into my crappy computer to finally hook it up through DVI and I’m pretty excited to do so. However I don’t really do any gaming, just regular web usage and a little poker.

All in all, I must reiterate, that despite the fact that this TV has been repaired once for a prior owner (who by the way because of FS’s 60 day guarantee got a new TV… good for me :)) and it runs a little noisy, I to this day would have gladly spent 1,500 to 2,000 dollars including taxes and an extended warranty (which by previous reviewers seems like a good idea) for my 400 dollar TV because it looks so good. I wouldn’t pay anymore than that just because I would rather go high end Plasma for the slimness and better blacks, but I honestly doubt they could beat the color. All in all, 10 out of 10 because you just can’t beat a deal like that.

  19. Excessive noise

    March 11, 2007 @ 11:52 AM

I bought my tv HDTV50w151 November of 2004. I purchased it from a reliable dealer and paid 3000 usd. Six months ago the bulb burned out. I purchased a new one from RCA and installed it my self. Some time after that a loud squeaky noise started and thought it was the fan. Trouble shooting, I find it is not the fan. With the bulb removed and TV on fan is not running but the noise is there. Put it on mute and noise still there.

I have a set of Radio Shack head sets and using this method, I do not hear the sound. This all tells me it is something in the speaker system.

I feel very cheated by Rca on this purchase. I bought this for my wife after she suffered a stroke and is disabled and the noise drives her crazy.

We bought the RCA Scenium 3yrs ago. We were impressed by the picture, high def, and because we were told there was little that could go wrong with the set. We were told the only two things that could happen were the light bulb, which lasts 10yrs to a lifetime or the motor. Last year the light bulb had to be replaced and now the color wheel needs replaced. The noise this set makes causes you to have to turn the volume up to drown it out which does not make for enjoyable tv watching. I feel deceived by our purchase of this t.v. Great pic…but not worth the 3thousand I spent.

I bought one of these when it first came out, and it is still going strong. The colors are very radiant, better than the plasma i own. If it ever seems to fail after a storm, just unplug wait a few minutes and plug back in. I was taken for about 600 dollars from a repair that i don’t think was necessary. I can;t wait to hook up the HD reciever to it now.

this television is the PITS. I have owned it for 18 months and it has been a nightmare for 18 months. the fan is so loud that you cant even enjoy watching the beautiful picture. I bought the extended warranty from warrantech and couldnot even use it for the fourth repair that I just needed. The bulb went on the set which costs $588.00 and I refuse to pay that much for the repair. RCA was wonderful about the situation.

I came across this User review section recently, and was surprised by the negative comments. I purchased the floor model from hhgregg for $2K. I was leary, because this unit was on every day 7 days a week for months, so I bought the extended warranty (24month). Well its been over 13 months and not a problem (yet). It has a great picture, and I use the DVI input for watching DVD’s. This set has many control menus to get lost in. I think that the SD pictures are quite impressive (fed from Component input from my Comcast PVR). So this set may have over 20 months of operation and still no problems. The picture quality is as good as the Samsung’s I have seen and the DVI input works at 480i, 480p and 1080i (it will not sync at 720p). The fan noise is prevalent only when you are near the set, but at distances of 4 feet or more, you can barely hear it.

    November 21, 2005 @ 1:32 PM

We’ve owned ours for just under one year now. We also had the random switching on and off as well as a louder than comfortable fan noise. Recently it just quit working. The power light would flash a half a dozen or so times then it sound as if it were attempting to power on. Called RCA and they said it was the lamp assembly. Local TV shop came and picked it up but RCA said it would be in-home service. When dumb and dumber from the local TV repair shop showed up they backed their truck up right over the lawn to our front door…nice. A week later we were told that after conducting a “global search” for the replacement part (they won’t tell us which replacement part it is) RCA has indicated that they will replace the TV….hopefully by Christmas. Now we are wondering how long the new one will last. I would say we might have put about 20-25 hours per week on the TV so that works out to about 1200 hours total…anyone know how many hours these things are designed to last?

My recommendation is that if you are going to purchase this unit, purchase the extended warranty on the unit in case it goes kaput after the manufacturer’s one year warranty…$3,000 – $3,500 is a lot to spend on a lemon.

I’ve had my RCA Scenium for about 6 months and love it. HD programs look absolutely amazing (especially sports, CSI, and Discovery HD). It is very easy to use and has a well planned menu. My only complaint is the fan tends to be a bit on the loud side. But, turn up the theater sound and it drowns out the fan noise.

    September 15, 2005 @ 10:35 AM

Have had my HDLP50W151 now for more than a year. Just recently the TV started acting suspiciously? It began by turning itself on in the middle of the night then turning itself off? After a few days it subsided then began again only more feverent now changing channels and not allowing me to use the controls at all neither remote or console? We called the TV repair person which promptly came and made the determination it must go to the shop.
One week later I called and the next day it was repaired. The delivery guys were very nice and connected all components into the wrong outlets but that was OK since I originally connected them anyway. For three days the set worked very well. About 2:30 in the AM I heard voices in my house and awakened to find that the set had again turned itself back on? Upon my approach to turn it back off it suddenly turned itself off! Later in the Am it repeated the process as if someone where inside and daring me to turn it on or off?

Now I have called the Service Reps again which again came back out and have removed the control unit “Channel Changer”. He informed me that someone from the factory had rebuilt the unit? This I cannot understand since it has never been to the factory since I have had it?

After he removed it though it is working properly but I can only control it with the remote. Hopefully they will replace this part soon.

By the way the first repair was made at the tune of $737.91. I was told that they cleaned the unit, replaced the lamp for whatever reason? The lamp worked fine when they removed the TV from my home?

    What do you think?

  29. Scenium one problem after another.

    By: Jackie
    July 5, 2005 @ 3:25 PM

Best way to sum it up is the term LEMON! We purchased our unit 2/23/04 and have had multiple problems. After only a few months a corner of the picture went black. The cost paid for the receiver had to be refunded to us because they couldn’t (wouldn’t?) repair it. Now the warantee has expired and again we have an issue. The screen goes black for several minutes at a time then reboots. FRENCH owned Thompson has the worst possible customer service department period. It’s like beating your head against a wall…but more frusterating.

Even when the Scenium is working it strains your eyes to view the picture because of reflection. You must be directly in front of it in a dark room. It takes an unreasonable amount of time to come on. And If you buy this set, you really are nuts.

However our Hitachi bought at the same time has been a dream.

Well I just thought I’d put my 2 cents in about this TV. I’ve been reading a lot of negative comments about it,and they couldn’t be farther from the truth. This is truly an awsome unit. The resolution is uncomparable and the colors are deep and saturated. There is real sense of depth bordering on three dimensional. The only explanation I can derive from the “Naysayers is that they are probably Samsung Sales Reps. They always seem to say they should have bought the Samsung. Not the Toshiba or the Sony or the Hitachi. When I called RCA’s customer service , I got through immediately. I informed them what I had been reading about the TV and they were quite suprised. They informed me that they have had very few calls that were complaints, but more for info on the remote , or the internet. I love this tv and I highly recommend it. I’ve had mine for just over a year.

    March 14, 2005 @ 2:10 PM

I bought this TV in Jan. 2003. Soon after, we heard a tinny sound to the voice and a strange ringing. In August of ‘03 it caught on fire. Not a blaze, but sparks flew, smoke came out and it smelled aweful. We called RCA and they sent out an authorized repair company. They took a look at it, said it was a ‘known’ issue and ordered a part. 45 days later the part came in and they “fixed it”. Since then, the TV hasn’t worked right. The volume cuts in and out, a weak signal sign pops up every time you touch the channel or the volume, and last week …you guessed it! It caught fire again! A different repair shop came out and took the TV this weekend ~ We just received a call today that RCA corporate is authorizing the repairs at no cost to us even though we are out of warranty (why thank you) but that is all they will do. Not sure if I want a $3000 fire hazard in my home! After doing some research, we have found other people that have encountered the same fire issue. I would steer clear of this one!

Bought my Scenium Sept 04..it developed a hissing sound and I checked and rechecked all my connections. Unfortunately the technician from the store is totally useless…he doesn’t understand this television! We’re thinking that when they sold me the TV they also sold me a JVC Home Ent. Center and that the two are not compatable. I cannot for the life of me get the Home Theater remote programmed and I’ve never heard sound come from the two rear speakers or the center speaker. Am going to instal S video cables and reconnect everything and see if it helps to get the sound I want……if your going to buy this TV talk to the tech and get serious assistance and make sure they know what they are talking about! Oh, if you can buy this TV from Tweeters and get the installation from a techie DO THAT!…

I’ve had this TV for 7 months now and it’s not living up. The internet browser is too basic for use and occasionally locks up the TV computer requiring a power off (unplug) reboot. No big deal, but that feature is useless. Love the 5 hookups in back, but only 2 are component instead of 4. For a HDTV, you’d think they would have all component plus the DVI input. Again, no real big deal. There was a small piece of lint on the inside of the screen during manufacture and the shadow was visible on the screen. After Kent (the RCA) tech came to the house, we dismantled the TV and pulled the lint off. Okay, bigger deal, but done. Later, a small hair got on the internal lense, magnified a hundred times it looked huge on the screen. It also wiggled as it was close enough to the fan to get air across it. Called Kent and made an appointment. Fortunately, after a night of use the fan finally blew it off. Otherwise it’s nice, but damn, should I have to know my service man personally? His name’s Kent! It doesn’t matter now because it’s broken again. Now it won’t turn on at all. RCA techs thought a bad bulb, so I took out the lamp, did the computer reboot code (channel dn while holding the power button for 10 seconds) and nothing! Kent will call me back tomorrow but thinks the computer is totally dead. This is not what I bargained for. It was nice while it worked.

The DLP Picture is nearly as good if not better than Plasma. The set is attractive and the operation has been flawless for over 14 months. Only problem is the noisy fan. Wish RCA would come out with a suggestion on how to correct this. It’s not a big thing but can be annoying. Most people never notice but I know it’s there and it bothers me, even it sometimes I can’t even hear it..*L*

I researched for years before buying the RCA. This thing rocks. It is everything I expected. (brighthouse w/explorer3000 hd cable box, using component interface) The RCA offers everything the others do with a few exceptions. Most notably is the split screen function offered by the Samsung. However, the RCA has a built in HD tuner.

  39. EXTREMELY disappointed

If you check back, you’ll see that I’m the same person who submitted a review on September 14, 2004. That particular TV lasted less than one week after its return from the repair shop. I experienced the same problem with the picture and in time I could get no picture at all. After complaining and expressing my total disappointment, I was provided with a brand new, fresh out-of-the-box, TV. Well, guess what? In less than a month I started to experience similar problems with the picture. It finally reached a point where I could not get a picture at all. The TV is presently at the repair shop and the latest information is that the technicians, who have been in constant contact with RCA, are unable to pinpoint the problem. So much for RCA. If the TV does not operate properly next time, you know what will hit the fan if the set is not replaced with a similar model, but a different name. I WILL NOT accept another Scenium RCA.

  40. Grt Picture, Electronics so so

Had this TV about 11 months. Usually runs good. Occasionally it gets a bit confused. It will lose picture and won’t respond to remote or set top controls and requires an unplug to reset everything. This is a bit annoying as you have to re-do some setups and typically lose your GuidePlus until an overnight refresh, plus it takes several minutes. This is kind of bush league for a sophisticated device like this. On the plus side, the picture is great, especially for sports. Heck any HD program.

The picture is great in HD mode has worked wonderfully since day one. The built in Guide to me is useless but that is not why I bought the TV.
PRICE, TECHNOLOGY, LOOKS, PICTURE and SOUND is why I bought it. Good one.

A few months ago I purchased a RCA Scenium HDLP50W151YX1. I used it for less than two weeks when I experienced trouble. The “set” was taking an inconsistent amount of time (from seconds to 10 minutes, or more) to bring up the picture. For the past two weeks, the TV has been at a local repair shop and just today I was informed that it will take 10 or more days just to receive a replacement part. In this day of high speed internet for placing orders and same-day courier services – go figure. I am NOT impressed with the performance of my new TV at all. I wish now I had spent my $4,000 plus tax (which is what I payed here in Newfoundland) for a reliable product such as a Sony or Samsung.

I’ve had mine for 2 months now. Great Picture, but the DVI connection will not output 720p. I can only get my home theater PC to output 960×540p. and play games at 800×600. Kinda annoying. Some reviews said TV sounded noisy, but I haven’t noticed any noise. Other than that great TV. Don’t buy one to set on the floor, only stands about 3′ setting on the floor.
