We own two of these phones. First my daughters quit charging and the phone talk only works on speaker. I gave her a hard time based on it being “over-used”. Three months later mine did the same. I’d been charging her battery for her daily. We found a universal battery charger and always have a good battery to use our phone. Now one won’t work at all and the other is constantly freezing up or powering itself on/off. Would buy it again but only at a lower price.

I have had my eyes on this phone for a long time. I did have an LGVX8300. It was a good phone…but honestly I like this one better. It is a great phone…I would recommend it to anyone. It is honestly not that hard to type on the keyboard. Just takes time and practice…but hey what doesn’t? Peace Out Ya’ll. And thank you Samsung for my black Alias:)

I work with phones all day, and this one is a problem phone. Freezing up, battery dying, you want it, it’s got it. It’s a one stop shop for typical phone reliability issues. My advice to anyone who has this phone: If you have problems with it, DO NOT go through Samsung. Go through Verizon itself, skip the manufacturer bullshit. They’ll send you out a refurbished model that will usually work better than the brand new model. But honestly, don’t buy it in the first place if you can. Verizon has a hell of a lot of better phones by better companies than Samsung.

I have had this phone for five months and I love it. I love the dual keyboard flip version. It is great and easy to operate it. I purchased the extended battery and it is well worth the money for this phone. No problems with it.

I have owned my phone for 3 and half months, but I have only had it for 1 month. It was constantly freezing up. So I sent it to get fixed. They did not fix it. So I sent it back, they did the same thing as the first time, they reflashed the software and did not test it. They claimed they held the phone for 3 days prior to fixing. But I did my own test and within 4 phone calls of walking around the mall, I was pissed right off. Samsung has not replied to my emails. And is all around poor customer service. I AM PISSED! The phone is great WHEN IT WORKS!!

After one week, no problems! Battery life great and texting is not as hard as these reviews make it to be! I have big fingers and I can do it. Sure I might type the wrong letter every once in awhile but I just back up and do it again. Not that big a deal. Get over it, the phone is worth the money!

I just picked my Samsung SCH-U740, and it was just what I needed. I’m big on texting so this was a simple choice. I’ve heard people complaining about the keyboard being a bit of a problem. This has never been not a problem for me, and I have big fingers. I got use the keyboard in a day. I get stopped whenever I have out in public people always have questions on it. In my opinion this is the best cell and money if you text a lot and don’t need a PDA, or Smart Phone.

I have lived with this phone for approximately one year now and have no problems with it. The phone has never locked up and has good battery life. It’s a breeze to send quick text and picture messages. I am very picky when it comes to cell phones, but Samsung answered the call to the phone I was thinking of, a dual flip with a keypad, it’s great. Although I don’t use the music function, I do use just about every other function to its limit on a daily basis. I would definitely recommend this phone to anyone. I have put it to the test and it gets an A+ every time.

  17. Average Battery Life and Small Keys
    Kemp Freund

    By: Kemp Freund
    July 25, 2007 @ 10:39 PM

I was looking for a slim phone to replace the thick but reliable one I had been carrying. Thin doesn’t work too well if you need good battery life. After two different variations of the Motorola Razor, I was told to try the SCH-u740. At first I was more impressed with the battery life over the other thin phones. The more I use it lately, the less I am impressed with the life of the standard battery. If you buy this one get a 1300 mAH spare battery and cover as an option. It makes it thicker but I needed the additional time between charges. Oh, the keys are tiny and the letters are microscopic. If you wear reading glasses keep them handy when using this. I’m getting used to it.

  20. Really? Already?!

    July 8, 2007 @ 4:02 PM

I got this phone two weeks ago and I absolutely LOVED it. I still really like the design and the who concept behind it. It worked great for a while. Now, when I get a call and flip open my phone it brings me to the "Quite" and "Ignore" page. I press send to answer it… and… nothing. I know there’s not a tower down, we’ve called… and I’ve had other Verizon customers call me and their phones are working just fine. My phone has also been just shutting off as it pleases. It hasn’t gotten wet, dropped, or anything else.

As far as physical flaws are concerned, putting the speakers on the inside of the phone wasn’t a very bright idea. If a person wants to close his/her phone and listen to music, it is muffled. I also don’t like the fact that in order to activate the external music controls you have to flip open the phone.

Physical pros are that the single hinge is much more sturdy then I expected. Although the QWERTY keyboard seems small, I have fairly large fingers and I have no problems with it at all.

As far as the extra functions are concerned I absolutely LOVE the voice to text! Although, I don’t get to use it much because we tend to have alot of (loud) teenage kids around and in order to use it you need to be in a quiet room/area.

I hope that the next phone works well because other then the recent issues I absolutely love it. But… I want more then just something cool looking. It needs to at least work.

I just upgraded today to the Samsung SCH-u740 and have played with it all day! This phone is one of the best I have ever handled. The picture quality is mediocre but for a phone good enough Sound is amazing for the size! unless you fat finger the keys alot the qwerty keyboard is not bad at all! I like everything about it! =]

The only problems I have found with it are it shows finger prints like crazy and I would like to be able to change the volume without opening it but thats about it! Overall its one of the best from verizon! and needs to be showcased as that!

This phone is awesome – The "pro" review kept bring down how unfunctional this phone is..what?! Maybe the guy reviewing it spent half a second with it, took a look, then went to the next. Yes, the letters/numbers/buttons are small, but after 10 texts and calls I was easily used to it! Now I text a lot faster and don’t need to worry bout the T9 word crap..now I can type any word and any abbreviation. Music is awesome, I have a 1GB mem. card in it, holds about 200 songs, and the stereo speakers are loud very a small phone, even louder then my last MP3 phone. All in all, its a sweet phone and easy to get used to.

    May 18, 2007 @ 10:13 AM

I just got my phone a month ago and i have to recharge the battery every 2 hours. Thinking the battery is defective I tried to slide the battery cover and while doing this the SCREEN bled because the elevated part of the phone on the key side put pressure on the screen and made the screen bleed. It is the only way to check on the battery, to be able to slide the cover, you have to exert effort on putting pressure on both side. Bad design. Now I can’t use my phone.

When I take a picture it looks great, but when I go to view it, it has white bars on each side. I want to view the pictures in full screen. Other pictures that people sent me are great and take up the whole screen but mine leave those bars. Please help if anyone has figured this out. It’s a new phone for me and I can’t find the answer anywhere.

When my cousin said she got one I’m like, "Okay, whatever". I didn’t think it would be that great. Once I actually saw it and used it, I realized it was a lot better than what meets the eye. It’s nice looking, and of course the dou-flip is a plus. The graphics are very nice and the sound is almost perfect! It’s great for people who text because of he keyboard, but it’s also easy to make calls. Sure, with some letters and numbers being on the same key it’s kind of hard to read, but you get used to it eventually. The only thing I really don’t like is how some thing are only available in flip mode, and some things are only available is horizontal mode. Otheriwse this phone is awesome!

  28. u740 audio

    May 7, 2007 @ 1:23 PM

Love this phone, but got frustrated after purchasing a couple of accessories.

    1. The Jabra JBT8010Z Bluetooth Mono/Stereo Headset recommended for it on the Verizon Wireless website.

Don’t get me wrong, the Bluetooth voice part works very nicely, but I have a Bluetooth headset already, and told the store rep I was specifically getting this to listen to my music. Of course, they sold it to me… and even after I took it back, they were perplexed that it didn’t work as we expected.. so I don’t completely blame them.

After putzing with it for an hour, including reading the directions (which I rarely do).. I broke down and called support. Turns out the phone is not Bluetooth stereo capable, so with or without the accessory that is available for that headset, the music portion of it is useless with this phone. (the headset in question plays music wonderfully when connected to an LG Chocolate .. and does so without the accessory).

    2. The media package

.. maybe I’m expecting too much, but when I asked if there was a USB cable charger available for this phone (like the one I use for my PPC 6600), I was told only available in the media package .. I thought, what the heck, I’ll take it. Get it home to find out you have to plug that USB cable into your friggin wall outlet for it to work as a charger. This is right up there with having a proprietary media connector in the first place. Talk about “Dee Dee Dee” !

    Aaargh

(Sad, I still love this phone because it looks really cool, the camera is amazingly good for what it is, and regular audio is pretty nice .. oh, and the qwerty, for us textually challenged, makes a big difference)

I got this phone two weeks ago and I love it. Everything, is awesome like the way you can customize all the small things and you can have caller id on the outside, with picture and everything. The video’s not that bad, and the camera…

My friends send the pictures off their camera phones to mine so I can upload it because it’s so nice. The background also changes from one way you flip it to the other from a wider and farther away view in landscape to a closeup in regular which I think is the bomb. love this phone, although I haven’t figured out how to use the music feature yet.

    Only thing(s) I don’t like,

You can’t get a cover besides a pouch for it and I keep messing up the voice thing, and i’ve never used it besides trying it out. You can’t get on the web besides landscape mode, which I understand but i don’t see why I’m not allow it to also be in regular mode. Also, i’m so worried about breaking it, I don’t wanna mess it up or anything. Nothing that bad though, just minor irritations.

I’ve had this phone for three weeks and love it! I bought the music kit and a 2GB SD card online, it’s much cheaper than going to a Verizon retailer. I can now listen to all my CDs and I’m loving it!

The voice recognition feature is not all that great, but you don’t need to use it if you don’t want to. Aside from that I haven’t found anything I don’t like about this phone except the color, but from what I understand they now have a new color (black), too late for me

So i got this phone a little over 2 weeks ago. I have to say it is pretty awesome. I changed over from the enV. I really like how slim and sleek the phone is. The only thing is the front wiggles from side to side a bit and I’m worried the hinge won’t last. The buttons are easy to get used to and I don’t see why everyone is whining about them being too hard to use. It’s as small as the RAZR but has a full keyboard. It’s a two ways street. Geez! My beef is that most of the features that make this phone excellent are only available in landscape mode. Also my girlfriend has the vx8600 and can CHOOSE to view texts and pix messages on the outside display. The only way for me to see texts on the outside is to have it on autoview. If anyone knows how to view them a different way please email me.

Basically the phone is awesome. I’m just afraid the hinge will give.

  32. So Far...So VERY Good!
    John M.

    By: John M.
    April 13, 2007 @ 1:39 AM

Two weeks with my sexy new sidekick, the Samsung u740. This has been a very smooth and interesting transition from my “pre-cool”, no camera, Kyocera SoHo KX1.

I love the slim profile, sweet looks and smooth feel of this phone. The reception is excellent and sound is perfect in handset and speaker mode. The “Qwerty” keyboard feature available in “side-flip” or “landscape” mode has made text, picture and video messaging fun and easy. I like the voice recognition/dictation software feature that allows performance of MANY features by voice recognition alone…including…entering text!

Too many way-cool features to list here…but that is a big part of the fun in exploration and discovery of a new, high tech, high dollar communications tool. The keypads are well lit and fairly easy to read. The camera and video resolution is great. Overall the u740 is a fantastic cellular phone!

Now for the few… less than perfect notations. The flip cover can be difficult to open quickly in landscape mode…unless you have a thumbnail. I dropped it once already trying to open the flip cover sideways. There seems to be no caller ID on the outside LCD, so you must open the flip cover to see who is calling. I deactivated the “answer on open” setting because of this. I was dissapointed that the MP3 software and USB cable was NOT included with the phone…$30.00 extra…so I have not used the MP3 player feature with touch controls on the outside cover.. yet.

In “landscape” or “side-flip” text mode you must read the dialing keypad numbers sideways…I am getting use to this. Just a few minor annoyances…no big deal.

Awesome Phone! Extremely High “WOW” Factor!
