Overall good phone

I’ve had the t509 for over a year now and the only problem I can think of that really bothers me is that the ear piece is really quiet. To my knowledge there is no way to adjust it. While driving or in a public area it’s almost impossible to hear what someone is saying. Even the speaker phone is pretty bad. Other than that, the phone has given me no problems.

I’ve had more than my share of phones and this one is one of the best I’ve carried in terms of form and weight. I use it with a Bluetooth device mostly so the volume doesn’t bother me and even when I don’t use it with a Bluetooth ear piece, its fine. I also carry a blackberry so it’s nice to have something very light and small in my pocket.

I overall liked the phone since I got it in February 07..now in October of 07 I manage to keep it in good shape…dropped it on all surfaces and stayed pretty good. The sound is a bit weak…and quiet…and not very strong on vibrate. Slow texting too, I could not text as fast as I used to be on my old Nokia…but after awhile you get used to it and it’s wayy faster…now my texting when I hit reply decides to say it sends and shows it but the person never gets it..so now I gotta buy a new phone…but very durable…and Samsung still makes a great phone.

This phone is completely worthless. It stopped working after a few months and then they gave me a replacement phone. It was the same phone and yet again it does not work. This phone sucks !! A waste of time and money, wouldn’t recommend this phone to anyone. And go-figure they don’t even make this phone anymore..I wonder why??

I bought a Nokia 6030 from T-Mobile and it cost me about 80 bones. The t509 on the other hand cost me only 40 bones. Since I have prepaid service all I had to do was buy it from the site and switch sim cards. In my opinion, this phone has to be one of the best on the market. The camera takes beautiful pics and the video is impeccable. Plus the effects are cool. I would recommend this phone to anyone.

I got this phone about a month ago and it works perfectly.. Would recomend anyone gettin this phone if they like the design and the slim feature. But if you want to transfer anything to your computer (pics or any file transfer) your gonna have to wait for Samsung to make a program that works with it.. What I dont understand is why are they selling the cables and programs that supposedly will work when they actually dont… Samsungs site even says they dont have a program that works with it yet, which I feel is just stupid on thier part….

This is may not be the greatest phone ever but it sure is a lot better then most of those that are out there. The product quality is perfect because it is coming from Samsung. therefor it is great quality and stylish phone. Is there any defects there maybe but i have seen people dropping their phone on a concrete floor and we all know that your battery cover will fall apart or it will come out of the phone after that kind of drop. In this phone it fell down about 2 stories and guess what ? the thing was still in operating mode. Forget the cover everyhting was intact and it was in perfect shape. There was couple of scratches , YES, because imagine you as a human falling down from the second floor in your apartment. Thank you.
I had this phone rite after it came into the market and it has been great since then.

I’ve read the site review and all the individual reviews. I wish I would have had the same experiences as all of you guys with the 8’s 9’s and 10’s! Yes the phone was less expensive for a "cool" looking phone. Yes phones are meant to be phones. But the simple Nokia I had before this one was FREE. It didn’t have all the bells and whistles but at least I could hear the people I was talking to and I could hear it ring and the battery lasted more than 1 day. I can’t hear the people I’m talking to, I can’t hear the phone ring half the time and the battery life is pitiful. Also, sometimes the phone won’t stop ringing unless you remove the battery. And the service bars have never been good (had the phone since August 2006) and recently started dropping calls every 3-4 seconds in a conversation. I like all the features of the t509 except that it doesn’t vibrate at the same time as the ringer. If you set it to vibrate, it does that first, then stops vibrating and rings about twice, which is not time to get to the phone if you don’t have it on you. That’s the only way you set the vibrate. Also, I use the phone with a hands free headset, and, since the phone won’t hold a charge, it’s plugged into the charger 80% of the time and the charger plugs into the same slot as the hands free headset, therefore, the only way to talk then is to hold the phone. But, you can’t really do that when it is plugged in because the cord is EXTREMELY coiled and the plug into the slot is not tight. As a result, when you try to hold the set in the car when it’s charging the plug comes out! I would love to love the phone the way all you guys do. I would say that maybe mine’s a lemon but we have owned 3 of these in our family at one time and one of them has already been replaced and this one will be as soon as T-mobile is willing to offer me something comparable that’s not a t509 or a lesser samsung or a nokia 6103. You say you get what you pay for. That’s all I’m asking really and so far that has happened.

I have this phone and i’m on it right now.. one thing I must say about T-Mobie is.. that they need to upgrade somehow on signal strength because right now.. .it sucks. I lose my signal like in almost every one of my calls.. I ca’t even have a decent convo in the comfort of my bed. I have to get up and move around.. all in all its a very sexy phone for da ladies but I dropped it a couple of times and all, it has is a couple of scratches.. and something about Samsung’s is.. I don’t know why, but they always turn off.. and come right back on.. I don’t know why but it does. right after you send a text sometimes.. but g2g see ya guys!! I LOVE MY LITTLE BABY THOUGH!! How come T-Mobile isnt pairing with anyone? and cheaper fones please!! lol

This phone isn’t as good as the sliver L6 or the older v3 razor.. which both doesn’t have mp3 players ether. the v3 is by far the best phone i had out of the three. the L6 has slow menus and the v3 is about as fast as the t509 in menu. the service in the l6 is terrible but the razor and the t509 is a little better in bars of service. major dislike in the t509 is very quite ringers non customizable message tones. but i like the screen saver wall paper option. you cannot use some ring tones also as ring tones when downloaded to phone. and it doesn’t vibrate and ring at the same time like the v3 or l6 sliver has. if i had a pic of these older phones i would love to get my v3 razor back even though if you drop the older razor its damngages easy and screens and speakers break quickly. on normal ware and tare.

November 15, 2006 @ 11:08 AM57pam11>
I went from a Motorola clam shell style to this candy bar wonder. I love the size, it fits in tight jeans, small clutch purses, etc. The screen is gigantic and has magnificent colors and quality. During conversation, you can hear the other party very loud and clear, without the sound distortion. HiFi rington sound great as well. The IM’ing feature is pretty snazzy, as it displays the current time, and also makes you aware of any incoming phone calls and text messages.
With it’s size, I was assuming I would have to be pretty careful with it. However, upon handling it for the first time, and dropping it on my kitchen floor, I found out just how dense this little bugger is.
I am, however, concerned with scratching that pretty little screen. Also, the text messaging ‘beeps’ can’t keep up with the typing, so that can be a little confusing. I do wish I could turn off the shutter sound, and maybe just a tad bit more room for the keys.
Overall, I think it’s a fantastic little phone, if super compact is what you’re looking for. Just don’t stick it in your BACK pocket!

Yeah, I had a Razr, but i had screen issues. TMobile offered me an upgrade to this phone, and I took it. Within one day, the screen cracked. Sure, it has nice looks and color screen, but the stability of this phone can be improved. Same with the camera, it lags, and the color takes a few seconds to go to a true color. This phone dissapoints me with durability. Never dropped, nothing else in a pocket, and the screen cracks. Its not worth it, in my opinion.

October 14, 2006 @ 10:37 PM46ppm10>
I love this phone. Now, I know it’s personal preference, but I frequently use RAZRs, as four people in my family have them. I, however, was the picky one and chose the t509. I don’t regret it, and even my mom is jealous because she hates her phone’s setup. In short, while the camera is jumpy, I don’t take pics much, and sometimes it’s loud, but turning it on vibrate is very easy adn fast, and it performs great.

standard functionality absent
By: jason
September 22, 2006 @ 1:03 PM08ppm9>
I’ve had my T509 for about a month now and believe I have made a mistake. Granted, it looks great, and everyone compliments its appearance, but functionality that should be standard on any phone is missing. Just as any car should have windshield wipers, I believe all phones should have profiles. You know, the ability to have a quiet profile for when you’re at work, a loud profile for when you’re at a basketball game, and a standard profile for in the car, for example. It was also shipped to me with a sorry array of ringtones and message alert tones. None of the ringers are exceptionally loud. After taking a photo, the phone tries to upload ur photo to a website, which would cost money. The button on the side of the camera activates the video recorder, not the camera, and it cant be changed, nor can the soft key button functionality. I woke up today to a dead battery (my fault) so I had to swap my sim card into my previous phone, a moto v330. I didnt make a conscious effort to try and compare the two, but i was almost immediately like “aahhhhh, this is how a phone should be”. If you want a bar-style phone like i did, i recommend nokia.
Samsung should stick with making dvd players and tvs.

Over the years i have been through so many phones, Nokia, Motorola, Samsung and Sanyo and everytime i switch to a phone because of looks i find myself always going back to Samsungs!! As a dedicated Samsung user from this point on I will say this that when you use the Motorolas with MP3 Players it slows down your texting and programs, any Samsung phone i have ever had i would choose over a motorola any day! I dont like the Slvr’s buttons and i Dont like the Razors small screen on the sub lcd!

This phone is sick. The only downside to it is that it doesn’t have much storage space. If your looking for anything more quality then the pics you get with this phone then you might as well go out and by a nice Nikon digital camera. For gods sake people phones are meant to be talked on. PS> If you know what your doing you can convert your mp3 files to a different format and you CAN set these as your ringtones. I have ringtone I could have ever wished for all made bt me! E-mail me if you would like the steps on how to do this…

I dont know wat these people were talking about when they said this phone was poorly designed. It is stylish and useful. I’ve had one for 2 days and i love it, bitches go crazy for stuff like this. The only bad thing is that u cant put your mp3s as ringtones but other than that this phone kicks the shyt out of any slvr. It is new and less overated than the razr or slvr. So when you pull it out in public and your friends say “oh is that like the slvr?” you have the right to say “no muthafuker its better than that!”

T509- Lord of the Candy Bar Phones
By: Russ
August 14, 2006 @ 10:57 AM50pam8>
Samsung t509– I’m thoroughly impressed by this gem of a phone. I normally only buy clamshells (last phone was a Razr), and this phone whoops the Razr’s ass on almost all accounts: More space, better camera functionality, the menus are a bajillion times faster (I think I spent a total of three days of my life waiting for the Razr’s menus to come up), every button is right where it should be, the screen has more pixels, it has a better T9 text input system, clean interface, EDGE support (high speed connections), and it’s thinner. That’s right, thinner than both the Razr and the Slvr.
Some people have said that they’ve accidentally sat on their t509 and it cracked the screen, but from what I could tell, you’d really have to land on it with a sharpened ass bone for that to happen. You should be taking care of your gadgets anyway. There’s two things I have noticed while trying to come up with negative things to say about the phone: 1) Can’t customize the menus. This kinda bugged me because it’s the first thing I do– make sure my common tasks are bound to soft keys and such. 2) Can’t set mp3’s as ringtones. This seems to be a T-mobile thing, because you can play mp3s fine, but the option to set them as your ringtone is grayed out.
From there, you have three options– I heard that if you’re downloading mp3 ringtones, you can set it as your ringtone right after you download it, but not long after the download is complete. You can also get a mp3 -> 3gp converter, as you are free to set 3gp ringtones. There’s free converters for Windows, but the quality kinda sucks. The last option is to hack your phone and manually change it, which I plan on doing.
All-in-all, this phone is wonderful, and you can count on Samsung to cut through the bullshit and give you a phone that does exactly what it should.

Awesome value for $49.99!

August 14, 2006 @ 5:40 AM21pam8>
this phone is ideal for technically challenged people like me. for a few bucks, I downloaded some mozart and rush megatones from t-zones and use them as incoming call phone rings. they sound great and no probs hearing them. I’m not a fan of flip or tiny phones either so this phone is perfect. The screen is awesome. its thinness more than makes up for its supposed lengthiness. as for the camera, i took a picture of a picture to use as a wallpaper and it came out great. the only draw back is no voice activation for my bluetooth headset. I still use a planner (old habits die hard!) so calendar type functions are not a big deal. I think it’s a great mobile phone for people who just want a phone and all the other bells and whistles are a neat plus but not a requirement.

Ive had this phone for 4 weeks now and no problems have arisen. The phone is in no way too long, and is comftorable too handle ( and im only 5′8). THe ring and call volume is fine and the keybad is quick and responsive as well as a good size. The camera may not be megapixel, but a phone isn’t supossed to be a camera in the first place. It fits in your pocket easily, and you won’t even know its in their sometimes.

July 27, 2006 @ 11:27 AM12pam7>
The t509 is basically the same size as the Motorola SLVR. Its a little longer but the screen is larger and its not as wide as the SLVR. The samsung phones i have seen will not let you change the menu to a list instead of icons which i dont like. Some reviews talk about the ringer and vibrate mode not being loud enough or strong enough, but i am a firefighter and can hear the ringer over the siren while in a firetruck and if you need a ringer louder than that, i dont think the phone is the problem. If you can change the soft keys i havent figured it out. i also bought a sticky screen protector because im sure the screen wouldnt last without it in a pocket with keys. Overall i think its a great phone for someone that just wants a phone without pda features. The camera is an improvement over my Razr phone. Actually the entire phone is an improvement over my razr which i really liked also.

July 11, 2006 @ 10:21 AM55pam7>
I bought this phone a few days ago and returned it after two days. In summary this phone just looks very good, but when it comes to functionality, it sucks. This phone is fragile and can break very easily. Besides, if you are used to using calendar and organizer, this phone is not for you. There is no short key to the calendar. I mean come on, there are two short keys for the camera but there is no short key for the calendar??!! You have to press 5 keys to get to the calendar, and when you want to add some event to it, you have to fill out a form: start date, start time, end date, end time, etc.!! After you add something to your schedule and add alarm for it, it reminds you by just a one second ring. I could not make it ring for a while until I stop it. Compared to my older Samsung phone, its signal reception is not good either.

PHONE IS THE WORST
By: Brandon
June 30, 2006 @ 11:21 AM02pam6>
Initially, I thought the phone looked really awesome. But I was wrong about Samsung’s ability to protect the screen . The screen does not have a very strong protective peice of plastic over the lcd. In fact, if you put a little bit of pressure on it, you will crack the lcd. Mine broke while sitting in my pocket. The only downside is the poor craftsmanship.

I love the phone!

Hey, I really recommend the phone. I don’t really like flip phones so this one was ideal for me. The only downside is that it lacks MP3, esp for the expensive price. No real exciting or innovating features but the camera takes sharp pix, and the wide screen is not blurry or condensed like most phones.

Good Phone!
By: Lee
June 14, 2006 @ 12:24 PM38ppm6>
I’ve had my phone for about a week and a half now and I personally think it’s rather nice. I really do disagree with the person who posted the initial review on the site, I have no idea what they’re talking about for the most part and how can you complain that you might drop a phone into a street crack, that’s really ignorant. I think the phone is great for it’s price and has features you can’t beat, my only problems are that the ring tones that it comes with are not good, at all. And the phone won’t let you set mp3s as ring tones like the razor does, I believe they HAVE to be in the 3gp format for them to be set as a ring tone, I’m sure tmobile did this simply to make more money, becase the mp3s will play, it just blocks them from being set as a ring or message tone. Not too cool in my opinion, but I’ve heard if you have the usb cable, you can covert songs on your computer and upload them, so I am going to try that. All in all however, great phone for the price, and it fits nicely into a pocket.

Found the perfect case!

June 13, 2006 @ 8:04 PM21ppm6>
I went searching online for a bluetooth headset for my samsung t509 and found that and more at yourwirelesssource.com and for very cheap! You might not find the case under the samsung accessories but if you look for the cases that fit the motorola slvr you’ll find quite a few choices, and since they have pretty much the same demensions it works great! I spent very little and got both the headset and case and overnight shipping.

For the big handed
By: Nathan
June 13, 2006 @ 8:16 AM20pam6>
Contrary to the comments in this article the phone in my opinion is not to big and the keypad is just the right size. If you are a tall person or someone with rather large hands and want a small phone then this is the right phone for you. At times I think that it isn’t long enough. The camera takes great pictures compared to most of the phones in my area. My area consists of Alltell so there in lies the bad phones. But with this t-mobile phone I get great pictures and the picture messaging is fun. True that the author points out the text messaging is rather slow but with a little patients and practice it is easy to handle.
The slim desing is great but I am still waiting for a hard shell case to put around it similarly like the ones for the slivr. This would offer better protection for my investment since t-mobile has gone to two year contracts. I recommend this phone.

i like this phone its sleek and lots of people drool over it. i was skeptical at first but i like it. the one thing i hate about this phone is, even at the poorest quality, the vid recorder records about 10-15 seconds and at best quality records 5-10 seconds. its really thin and has great features, aim yim icq & msn messengers fun games etc.

I hate mine
By: Cooper
June 8, 2006 @ 8:09 PM26ppm6>
I’ve had my T509 for 2 weeks now, enough to know that I hate this phone. The sound quality sucks, the ringer is too low when set at the highest volume, the camera is terrible, text messaging is a chore due to predictive being slow, the games are lame (would it have killed them to put at least a few good “classic” casino games on it???), and battery life is far too short- mine won’t even last 3 days- 2 days maybe (talk and play maybe 1 hr on it per day).
I had a Motorola V60 about 3-4 years ago, now THAT was a great phone for its day.
I will probably exchange this for the Motorola RAZR.

Review is Skewed
By: billy
June 1, 2006 @ 7:11 AM53pam6>
Haven’t owned the phone long enough to rate it properly, (so the 5 is bogus) but right off the bat I can tell you that the review is skewed… the phone doesn’t feel cheap, and the sound quality is better than my Motorola L6… also the statement that the L6 is a superior phone is nuts… the L6 has terrible sound quality/coverage when used with T-Mobile, plus the screen isn’t even comparable to the t509… the t509 is meant to compete with the L6 but it’s just a much nicer and higher-end phone… and as for low on features- I just don’t understand that… it has more features than an L6, and short of a larger camera, it has just as many features as any phone available, until you start getting into the PDA/Smartphone realm of devices…

Set the phone book entry to a mobile number, seems most of the new cell phones have an “idiot proof” feature that will cause it to not send a text message to a number unless it is marked as a mobile/cell number.

By: kdewitt
May 31, 2006 @ 7:37 PM06ppm5>
this phone sucks! i have tried unsuccssfully many many times to get this thing to text a simple message to an email address. i created a single phone address entry in the phone book w/ only the name of the entry and 1 email address. but, when i tried to send a text msg to this phone book entry, i keep getting an error msg “no address”…however, when i reply to an email address, it does reply correctly.
this is definately a software bug that needs to be fixed.

Sound Issues
By: Eric
May 29, 2006 @ 6:57 AM49pam5>
My wife and I just got this great phone a few days ago, and my only complaint (which may lead us to return them) is the fact we can not hear our callers. In louder settings, you might give up on the call. In quiet setting, the sound is not very clear. This is from the normal speaker and also the speakerphone. Is there some setting I am missing to make this phone louder/clearer? As for mp3 ringtones I have used quicktime pro on my mac to convert 30 second clips to .3gp format which this phone will play as a ringer to get around having to pay 1.99 for tmobile’s hifi ringtones. You can than transfer them over bluetooth to the sounds directory.
I upgraded from a Sony t610 that I used for over 3 years with no problems at all. That phone was not as feature rich as some of todays models however i dont think I ever had a clearer phone. Im going to give the Samsung t509 a few more days because the style of it is so great. However a phone is a means of communication, it can have all the bells and whistles in the world, but and if you cant hear out of it what good is it.

and it’s a $50 phone. wtf where you expecting?? actually, this is the best low cost phoe i’ve seen in a while, just got mine today, and it’s great for the cost.
and btw, pointing out the possibility of this phone falling thru a crack in the street as a drawback has got to be the most ass backward thing i have ever heard a reviewer say about an “ultraslim” phone.
first and last review i’ll ever read on this site, let me tell ya.

May 18, 2006 @ 1:16 PM07ppm5>
I think any bad points about this phone like all the above mentioned are mitigated by the fact that it’s only $50 and it’s very thin. All I need and want from a phone (like many people) is that i can put it in my pocket without it bulging, and that it actually works as a phone and I can text and surf the web and check my e-mail. This phone has all these things and it looks fantastic.
If you want a great camera or a boombox full of ringtones, don’t get this phone. But this thing has great battery life and slimness. I actually like that it’s long as the reviewer comments because anything shorter, I find, is awkward to hold. I love it.

As what other people have said, this is a great phone. The razr has a VGA camera, and so does the SLVR L6, THE PHONE ITS MEANT TO COMPETE WITH, and it outperforms that phone by a lot. First of all the screen is WAAAY better than the L6’s which just looks washed out. For me, I CANNOT use a phone with a crappy screen, I just dont want it and it makes me think of it as cheap and outdated, low-end product. Sure the SLVR L7 beats it, but THATS NOT THE PHONE IT WAS MEANT TO COMPETE WITH. This stupid reviewer should look at which phone’s this certain phone was meant to go up against. Because it doesn’t outrank the SLVR L7, but it DEFINATELY beats the L6, the phone it was MEANT to compete with.

A great phone for the price
By: Ed
May 13, 2006 @ 4:49 AM21pam5>
I completely agree with the above two reviewers. The t-509 serves all my purposes. It’s slim, light, easy to use and priced right with bluethooth. If there is a possibility of loosing the phone through any cracks, that simply tells me that the phone is truely slim. Could that be a design fault by making it TOO THIN? I give 9/10, just because nothing is perfect!

Simply put: A Great Phone!

May 12, 2006 @ 11:45 PM55ppm5>
What a strange review. Warning us about walking over grates in the city for fear of falling in? Are you crazy? The form factor of this phone is terrific. I like the length of this phone. If fits perfectly in hand.
I couldn’t care less about the camera. The phonebook is excellent. The screen is sharp and clear. I tried the SDA for two weeks, and even though it has more colors, the T509’s screen is much more vibrant.
Sound quality is excellent, as is RF reception. Very comfortable keys. Outside of a qwerty keyboard, this is a great texting phone. It is worlds better than the SLVR’s keyboard.
I want a phone to make phone calls. I have an IPOD with 30gb of storage. Who cares about having it on a phone?
I do however like having access to the web. This is no wi-fi wonder, but it has EDGE, which I can use with my T-Zones for $5.99 a month. T-Zones isn’t available on the SDA, so you have to opt for the $29.99 internet package. With tax, that’s over $40.00, just to get some ball scores and movie times. No thanks!
This is a great cellphone. It does what it should, in a magnificant form factor.

Thin and full of features for the $
By: Marc
May 12, 2006 @ 3:13 PM40ppm5>
I do not agree with the review of this phone, the T509 on this site. It has many great features, plus when buying with a new contract or upgrading, it only cost $50. With bluetooth, the sleek stylistic design and weight. A camera, thats good, not great, but it’s a phone first and formost. Great sound quality, and not to mention a beautiful display and great interface. It’s one of the best phones i’ve seen, and that’s comparing it to the RAZR, V330, Nokia 3650, and V600. I like gadgets and features on phones, plus style. You get that in this phone, plus at a price, it’s really a steal. If you want an mp3 player, go buy a nice one. Want a nice digital camera, get a Canon. Want a great phone thats stylish and has many great and fun features, get the Samsung T509! Also, I love the text messaging and IM’s on this phone! I’m 6′0 fairly average build for a male, and have no problems using the keypad for typing. I give this phone an 8. The length could be alittle shorter, but it really is a good length, especailly for my hands. All the buttons are located where they’re supposed to be also. One thing to note, it doesn’t support mp3 ringtones through the bluetooth, you have to download them through the carrier. Not a big grip, but hey, nothings perfect, though this phones comes close :) Try it out for the 14 day period, if you don’t like it, return it. I kept mine happily. Also, one fun thing is downloading animated gifs for the wallpaper, lol.. I’m a geek.
