7.100
By: 7.100
June 18, 2004 @ 6:02 PM52ppm6>
The 7.100 is good in many ways: including improved fastforwarding, faster GUI. However I couldn’t find the Navigation anymore (folders). Anyone know of this? As well for some songs after applying the lyric to it, the time count for the song goes crazy going 20 seconds/ second (of course with lyric on the lyrics go that fast too and then freeze). So 2 questions here

Check out the forum for what I posted about 7.100, I know at least 5 English speaking people who have tried it and its all good. No problems and lots of upgrades, and yes it is the latest one to date. – - – It adds better Navigation, FAT32 Format Capability, faster functions + ASF Support and Sleep and Study Modes. Great upgrade : )

Questionable Durability
By: Danny Smith
February 11, 2004 @ 12:34 PM12ppm2>
I mainly use this player for runnig and at the gym. I bought one in August 2003 and it worked fine until December. I was running and it cut off a few times and then just stopped working.
I had an extended warranty and replaced it a few days ago. My new one exhibits the same troubling characteristics. When I am running and it hits my chest or if it bumps something lightly through my sweatshirt, it cuts off abruptly with a static noise issuing through the earplugs. And it sometimes takes a while to start working again.
I use the neck strap, but not the protective case as I always have it under my sweatshirt. This is troubling. Anyone else have similar experiences? Any suggestions?

Its a great solid player

January 27, 2004 @ 7:45 PM05ppm1>
Heres the latest:
- There are new Firmware updates, just check the forum of this site man or search google for them and you’ll find them very, very quickly.
- Unless your using cheap rechargable batteries you should expect to get at least 8 hours listening time out of them of listening time at least, I can generally record about 3 hours on it and listen for about another 2-3 hours before having to change the batteries (Ni-MH batteries, WOW, 20-30 Volume – hey the Subway is loud!)
- Also, with the new version 5.700 it searches through audio files much faster, increasing the rewind / fastfoward speed the longer you have it going, like a VCR Recorder so it takes less time to find your spot or review something
- Lastly, I personally never take it out of its case for protection’s sake – unless I’m recording voice/line in that is. Its fine to hold it open in your hand or in your pocket and still have access to the volume slidebutton, as I personally always like to keep it at a constant volume
- Additionally, if you probably already figured this out, but if you have big mp3 Files you can just download a FREE program to split them up into smaller segements, say 2-5 mins to make it easier to find your spot in them – there are also FREE mp3 gain programs that can either increase or decrease the volume of your mp3s to match the rest or so you can actually hear them if they were faint to begin with, with little or no audio distortion
- But alas, the poweroff time can still NEVER be set to more than 25 seconds…. – See my previous review 1 space up for other great new features in 5.700 though – heres a link to download it from:

Uncertainties Cleared + Tip
By: Andrew Cheng
January 27, 2004 @ 10:29 AM16pam1>
Uncertainties + Some Great Tips:
1)Yes, the YP-55V’s memory is not upgradable.
2)Battery will last probably 12 hours on a Duracell AAA, 6 hours on a rechargeable AAA. (volume = 13-15, SRS WOW = ON)
3) Once turned on, it will be on the same song as when you turned it off.
4) The “small button” on the volume slider is annoying at first, but it will become second nature in a few days.
5) Songs are generally in alphabetical order. Although I constantly see some that are not in order.
6) Yeah, you can pause the song.
7) You CAN change the time for auto-power off. (MAX = 25 seconds)
8) Currently there are NO NEW Firmware upgrades available.
9) Software IS NECESSARY to format the player. Do not format using WIndows Formating Tool. Please install driver + Samsung Software.
10) BIT RATES: WMA = 48 – 192 ONLY// MP3 = 64 – 320
*SEE MY PREVIOUS REVIEW ABOVE FOR MORE DETAILS ABOUT THE YP-55V*
**VERY GOOD TIP FOR ALL USERS OF YP-55V**: After placing all your songs in, it will be a VERY GOOD IDEA to DEFRAGMENT your flash player. This way the songs will be all contiguous files and the player will have a easier time retrieving it from the flash drive. This way battery life will be saved and as well changing songs will be much more efficient! Defragmentation tool comes with all WINDOWS. In Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defragmenter

Only problem is the PowerOff Time
By: Peter
January 19, 2004 @ 10:58 AM16pam1>
(Actual Score of about 9.7)
I’ve had this player since Mid-November, and its worked great all the time, except for one unexplained lock up last night for about 5 minutes after transfering a few files over. It works fine now though, and the new firmware upgrade I got 5.700 allows for everything I could possible want – except for the PowerOff Time still only being a max of 25 seconds instead of a minute or so. This new firmware upgrade has: 1) Navigational Directories, 2) Playlist functionality, 3) No # of File Limits (original Firmware was limited to 253 MP3 Files after which it would just stop playing, and would not allow you to record anything and would delete anything you had already recorded, but thats fixed) 4) IT SAVES YOUR SPOT IN A TRACK (Even if you go to another option, shut off the player twice and go back its still saved your spot!) 5) It can play at ANY bitrate 6) More Menus, allowing you to get to FM Encoded Files/Line Encoded Files as easily as Voice files.
So except for the power off function and the occasional lockup, this is the ultimate MP3 Player, especially for me who uses it for AudioBooks.

I agree for the most part about all the pro’s of this product. I am having slight problems though. The ending of many mp3’s are clipped slightly upon copying. Also, for some reason I can only copy 111mb of content to the device… i can’t figure out why?

January 13, 2004 @ 10:45 AM18pam1>
I have bought the idol JP-200MG and it has some of the capabilities that the samsung doesn´t seem to have:
1)navigation through directories
2)high bit rate recording (256)
3)great quality voice recording ( it is posible at high bit rate mp3 format) ( incredible fidelity)
4) long cable for ear buds
5) multilined screen
6) restarts playing at last position when turned off
7)light and small
disadvantages:
1) no carrying case
2) lcd is easy to scratch
3) not so many options to configure sound ( no surround, etc)

Great, except for buttons and no folders

January 7, 2004 @ 1:31 PM49ppm1>
I got this player for christmas and am almost completely satisfied with it. It holds plenty of music (60 songs on average for me) and the transfer time via USB is fast, much faster than burning CDs or MDs. For all you Linux users out there, it is completely compatible. Just do a mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /yourmountpoint and your set, no drivers required. My only problems with this player are switching tracks by twisting the top of it and the inability to organize tracks. If your on song 5 and want to go to song 25, you have to twist the top 20 times. The only way I have been able to organize the tracks on the player is by creating directories (which are sorted alphabetically) when I’m uploading to it (the directories aren’t seen on the player and the songs in each directory seem to have no order, not alphabetical anyway, maybe chronolgical). So if you want to control the order of all your songs would have to create a seperate directory for each song. Other than that I thinks its great. Those of you that are complaing that the max bit rate is 128kbps I think are crazy. It sounds good and I really like the button head phones that come with it.

slick design, acceptable sound quality

January 7, 2004 @ 4:35 AM39pam1>
I bought this yp-55 on New Year’s day after I had done some research. The player is heavier and bigger that it looks in picture. The sound quality is definitely not of top class, but reasonable enough if you use it outdoors with a lot of noise going on. Voice recording performance is not as good as some people described in their reviews. Line-in recording works almost perfectly when I hooped it up with my dvd player. Menu navigation is annoying and buttons are difficult to use. Battery life is decent but noting extraordinary. In short, a good mp3 player like this still has a long a way to go if it wants to catch up with some other portable audio devices like MD player in terms of sound quality.

December 24, 2003 @ 8:02 PM47ppm12>
the yepp55v works for me just fine. but i need some comment on this: i was trying to maximize the number of songs that i can put in the player by encoding the mp3’s to 64kps rather than 128kbps and expecting to load more than a hundred songs. the thing is, the player won’t load more than 65 songs. am i missing something, or is there really a limit on the number of songs that you can put on the 55v?

Inferior usability
By: Marty Backe
December 7, 2003 @ 8:40 PM58ppm12>
I purchased this as an upgrade to my YP-30SH. Stop the player anywhere mid MP3 file and when you resume, it resets to the beginning of the file. When you listen to 1 hour recordings like I do, this is a killer. I wouldn’t like it much even if I just listened to music. Their older players handled this fine. Why not the 55V?
Also, less of a concern but still kind of a pain, when fast forwarding through a file you can’t hear it. Of course on their older models you could.
I just threw away $200!!!

Amazing Product

November 16, 2003 @ 2:02 PM14ppm11>
Just have to say that this is one of the best MP3 plyers that I have ever had. I just bought this device to reccord my lectures and later found that it did an amazing job at it . I couldn’t believe that it had over 15 hours of reccording time. Before I bought it I tried the olympus reccorder and the quality was terrible and only offered 3 hours of reccoding time without any mp3 playing ability.
Over all I would have to say that this is an excellent little device and so far I hadn’t had any problems with it. I infact use this device dring my exercise period and it works great.
I also love that I can listen to the radio and reccord when ever I like.

Fix for Track Order
By: Susie
November 6, 2003 @ 8:17 AM52pam11>
I liked everything about my Yepp except the order in which the tracks copied to it, BUT I asked Samsung tech support about it and they solved the problem. If you rename the tracks in Windows Explorer by putting a letter or number before the name of the mp3 file, it will put them in alpha or numeric order. I changed mine after they were already loaded and it works like a charm. Since I use my Yepp mostly for audio books, track order was very important. Now I LOVE it!!

Korean Swiss Audio Knife

November 3, 2003 @ 4:51 PM03ppm11>
I originally wanted an mp3 player primarily for listening to music while running, but when I started to see what features could be had for similar prices, I started to look into the YP-55V and eventually bought it.
Most importantly, the sound quality is pretty good. This review wouldn’t go much further if it wasn’t. I use mine with a pair of Sony ear buds. The buttons are slightly loose, but work fine. The player is extremely light and the size is almost exactly the same as two Bic lighters stuck together. The display, while small, has good clarity and produces enough information. The FM reception is certainly not that of a device with a full antenna, but it’s pretty good for my location. Functionaly is pretty easy to get used to. Just be sure to read the manual to fill in what you can’t figure out. Voice recording quality from a TV about 4 ft. away is pretty good. FM encoding to mp3 is not the quality of a CD rip; it sounds like a microphone placed in front of a radio speaker, although slightly better quality than that. USB installation to Windows Advanced Server 2000 was a multi-hour process of trial and error before it worked to the point of plug n play. I believe I have one bad USB port tho, but I eventually sorted it out and it runs fine through my USB port hub. I just leave the cable plugged into the hub and when I want to, I then just plug the player to the cable. The carrying case that comes with the 55V is pretty lame as it’s supposed to fit in the palm of your hand — bad for bicycling or those of us that sometimes trip and use our hands to break our fall. For people who want something they will use primarily for exercising, a Rio looks to be a better option, but for those who want it all like I do, I suggest looking into armband alternatives sold separately. Try the Body Glove armband at :
http://shop.store.yahoo.com/sepharus-store/fel75547.html
or the Tune Belt brand, which I got:
http://www.tunebelt.com
Lastly, the player does not need special software for transfer of files. Just use Windows Explorer and go to town.
Overall, a very good mp3 player that’s full of options and has great sound quality.

I returned my RCA Lyra 128 because it broke, this one is great quality, the sound is much better, love the graphic for when I turn it off with the guy sleeping little things like that really improve and make this one stand out, the turnning cap on the end that most people are ratting about is my favorite part about the player in my pocket I was always changing tracks because the push buttons got pressed in my pocket the turn dial eleminates this problem, The blue back lit display, the easy to read info packed display, the srs, tru bass, and 5 eq settings one of which you can change not to mention the ease of loading songs by copy and paste makes this player a winner, Id give it 10 if it was expandable, but at 256 your doing fine even if its encoded at a high bit rate.

October 31, 2003 @ 7:11 AM10pam10>
This works as advertised. Playback is good, radio is good, USB drive is good. Not having to use jukebox software is really good. The Hold button is good. Haven’t tried the on-board rip to mp3.
I wish you could manage ALL the settings from the PC (radio presets; playing order (just as you can arrange the sequence in a PC Favorites folder; the order of the menus; equalizer; loops etc etc)
I wish it had a built in lithium battery that recarged form the USB port or other charger
I wish next track jog/search was on a proper button or slider. The twist cap is cute but a pain, and cheaply done
I wish you could easily delete songs from the player (hint give us a delete button that works while song is playing)

I’ve only had the device for a few days, but I can’t find a wma file that I downloaded from my computer to the device. Great, but needs folder navigation
By: Daniel Pope
October 27, 2003 @ 5:10 PM48ppm10>
I love this thing. Between MP3/WMA playback, removable storage, line encoding, and dictaphone… I have a ton of uses for this.
My only criticism is what other people have said here. There needs to be a ‘browse by folder’ option, as trying to find a particular song can take a very long time. Hopefully that can be in a firmware update?
it only RECORDS at a maximum of 128kbps. It will play back up to 320.
It’s my new best friend. I’m a musician, and I use it to store session files, listen to rough mixes, and capture lyrics/samples/vocal melodies, take voice notes and more. And it’s tiny.
Give it ‘browse by folder’ and I’ll give it a 10.

Bought it when it first came out at future shop, for around 500Canadian, and, it has been my best portable audio device I have ever had. The only complaints I have, is
my headphones did break, after 6 months… last week for me…
and going through the songs is really a pain, with 70 songs, takes you a while to flip around
But other than that, its an aamzing device, and I would recomend it to anyone

Good
By: Andrew Cheng
October 14, 2003 @ 5:41 PM16ppm10>
As Samsung is a respected electronics brand, it must continue to manufacture good quality products to maintain this reputation. I recently bought the YP-55V from Best Buy, and it was great. I didn’t find any errors or bugs of any sort. The little button the volume control is hard to use if you have extremely large fingers, which i don’t. Now i will name some disadvantages:
1) small button on volume button
2) no folder option (make folders inside player to organize files)
3) LCD is 1 lined
4) battery AAA, which is less capicity than a AA and is also more expensive… The battery that came with the player lasted i would estimate 5 hours… i would guess this happened because i formatted the player 3 times and pasted files many times (maybe that sucked the juice from the battery , or the battery just sucks)
5)if you want one song say the 56th song and ur currently playing the 27nd song u would have to twish the cap of the player 29 times! so changed between songs can be bothersome
6)note that the ear phones the right ear phone line goes BEHIND ur neck…
thats basically it.. i would recommend this player to everyone just because it has great features… I dont think the saved presets of the FM mode work very efficiently..
the voice record is great i used it to record school lectures and meetings etc.
great freedom of options eg. auto turn off time… backlight time.. scroll speed… random, repeat, repeat all… etc … great player overall surround sound is good too

Drive Format?
By: Nick S
September 4, 2003 @ 7:26 AM52pam9>
I’m attempting to use it in Linux, and solely Linux. It seems to be formatted FAT16, not a huge problem, but additionally, you can’t simply format it FAT16, it has to be formatted with its own proprietary software. In other words, Windows READS it ok using no drivers, but formatting it requires installing the drivers. I’m debating whether to return it or not.

This thing is pretty handy to carry around so I’m using it more often than I thought. Battery life seems good, esp. since I just got rechargable batteries ;^)
Only complaint I have is that to switch songs you have to go linear through the list. No way to skip from “album” to “album” (directory to directory). Being that this can hold a *lot* of MP3s it can be a pain to navigate.

September 3, 2003 @ 6:14 PM51ppm9>
The reviewer doesn’t mention if the memory is user upgradeable, is it safe to assume it’s a fixed 256 Mb? Why not use compact flash, and what explains Samsung’s allergy to it?
The maximum bit rate is 128Kbs, why not 256Kbs?
Just these two points make me prefer a Nex II.
