hassles

Bought this Xmas of 2008. When it works it is great. Firmware updates are a hassle. Biggest disappointment is that new movies often do not play, or seem to freeze. When renting Blu ray and paying 6+ bucks it would be nice to be able to watch the darn things. I have had to take many back to the store and exchange for regular DVD. Would be helpful if they published their “will not play list”–if it is available I can’t find it.
I suggest trying another brand.

I bought this player in early February 2009. For the first few weeks it worked fine, although it was very slow (2-3 minutes) to load a DVD. Then it wouldn’t play anything. I’d put a disc in and it would whir around for a few minutes and then say “cannot operate” and spit it out. I called the company (BTW punch in 1132 to skip all the phone tree BS to talk to a live person) and they said to try a firmware upgrade. The firmware doesn’t open on a mac so I had to borrow a PC to do this and it is a bit complicated. The player then worked for a few days until it stopped working again. I called the company again and insisted that the player was defective. They reluctantly agreed to take a look at it and sent mailing labels. The turnaround was pretty quick and the tech report that came back with the player said “REPLACED DVD MECH AND INSTALLED LATEST FIRMWARE VERSION PN9022700″. Guess what? I plugged in and still doesn’t play either BluRays or standard DVDs. I’m at my wit’s end and will next try to get a refund.
Do yourself a big favor and DO NOT BUY THIS PIECE OF CRAP!

Just like all products, keep things current. If you purchase a new one check to see the version of firmware before you try any movies. This allows you to view all your movies hassle free, as some newer movies have newer features. This product looks great, setting features are easy to understand and operate. It also allows for using alternate sound equipment via HDMI, composite or component. Makes for a nice touch so you don’t have to upgrade your current surround sound unit. I’d recommend this product to anyone. I’ve seen all the latest movies from ‘Quantum of Solace’ to ‘The Day the Earth stood Still’ without any problems and with excellent picture and sound.
