  1. Great Camera

I have had my Sony DSC-S600 for over 2 years and I’ve shot over 5000 pictures and videos.I’m very pleased with it. I had the same problem with it as the others with it shutting off or not coming on. Fortunately for me electronics was a hobby of mine and my first thought when it stopped working was to change batteries. I took a few pictures and the problem started again. I then ‘cleaned’ by rubbing the battery contact surfaces in the camera with my finger.

The camera worked again for twenty or so more pictures and started doing the same thing again. When I got home I cleaned all of the electrical contact surfaces including the Ni-Cad batteries with a Q-tip DAMP (NOT WET) with alcohol.

I also used a needle to VERY gently pry up the contacts on the battery compartment cover as it looked like one of them was recessed slightly thereby preventing good contact. That was 4 months ago and it has worked perfect since.

I’ve found that using my camera in anything less than fairly bright sunshine with the AF light off produced blurry pictures.

I am very happy with this camera for its clear pictures and video that is much better than my old JVC VHS-C video camera.

  2. Absolute Garbage

Same problem here – it seems to be a design problem. I bought it brand new and it was stored in a safe very protective case at all times. Used only a couple of times a year. It then developed an intermittent problem with the ON button not operating or only operating erratically when switching between the different picture/movie/view modes. Then it would turn off when the lens was still projecting from the camera body or would come up regularly with a message saying switch the camera off and on again. Then after a while, it just refused to switch on at all. Chews through batteries and is power hungry. Absolute garbage and has a manufacturing flaw with the ON switch. Avoid buying this rubbish – very disappointed.

  3. Worked for about 2.5 years

I only used this camera sparingly. Usually I just took pictures of items I wanted to sell on eBay (not a lot of things). After 2.5 years it no longer works. The camera was never abused, dropped, or otherwise mishandled; one day it just refused to turn on.

Worked great for a time, but I guess all things end up dying. It was my first digital camera, so I have no idea how long they’re supposed to last. Sony’s warranty is for one year, so I guess anything longer than that is a bonus.

My wife bought this Sony DSC-S600 about two years ago. I started using it about a year ago when my old kodak quit, and noticed that it seemed to eat batteries. I found that often I could just remove and replace the same batteries and it would work fine…otherwise it would radomly not turn on or not turn off. It now turns on and off at will…IT’S WILL not mine even with new batteries.

Hello Sony buyers. Its a very good camera but its works good only for 12 months.I bought this camera for US200$. First i had the shutter problem after 12 months I got it repaired for US 65$ , now its not letting me to take snaps. I use original Sony rechargable batteries ,its eats lots of power from the barrery i guess. When i turn on the camera immediatly the camera shuts down and the lens shutter remains open.Very frustrating model I came across in life.

Got the same message as my comrade in woes (above) and feel just as disappointed. Nothing makes it turn on any more. How Sony can get away with such a fatal, irksome glitch, I wonder! The worst is I bought in NY and live in Rio…Guess I’ll have to TURN OFF Sony from my consumer life for good…

More of the same, had this camera about a year or so and now it won’t turn on. Kept getting the message “turn off and turn on again”…repeating this exercise a few times would get it to work but now not at all. Also one of the hinges for the cover for the batteries broke off and now it’s pretty much useless. Very Disappointed! Junk!

Excellent quality pictures. After about a year battery consumption increased greatly and now will not function at all. Very disappointing. No more SONY equipment for me.

At first it rectified itself after being turned on several times, but went through batteries fast. Now it attempts to start, it shows the ‘access’ message’ then shuts off. It’s a big surprise because the other Sony products we have are excellent.

  10. Starting acting wierd after about a year

I loved this camera at first, it takes great pictures. However after about a year, it started shutting off after not being on very long and I would have to turn it on several times for it to stay on. It also started going through batteries extremely fast. Now, when I turn it on I can view pictures off of the memory card but I cant take pictures. The camera shuts off as soon as I switch it into that mode. Now that I’m researching, I’m finding this to be common. Do not waste your money!

If you use lithium batteries (which could last a lot longer) you would find this camera to be of higher performance. I would recommend it to people who loves taking photos outdoors because it requires strong flash to get good quality pictures in dark places.

Overall comment: good value for money, portable and easy to use.

I bought this camera in the middle of 2006 and about eight months later it started turning off after being on for only a few minutes. I sent it away for a few weeks and it returned with a “clean bill of health” from the Sony company, saying they couldn’t find a problem. When I tried to turn the camera back on, it rufused.

Had the camera for about a year and have always had trouble with it. The lens protector doesn’t close, and now it won’t even allow me to take pictures because there is a malfunction with the lens itself. Definitely get rechargeable batteries.

I am very disappointed with this camera.

  14. Died about a 14 months after purchase

Until the camera started acting weird, I was really happy with it. I HAD always loved Sony and no offense to anybody but they really suck nowadays. The camera started acting weird, at first it wouldn’t turn on, then when I managed to turn it on after a couple of minutes, I found out that the lens didn’t show anything, but I could view the pictures inside the memory card. And guess what, I had wasted $150 only to find out that ProDuo was only compatible with Sony products. So that made me really mad. I now got a Samsung and I hope it won’t quit like Sony did. Yea and I had to buy a SD card for it but if it dies at least I don’t have to worry about the card. Don’t buy Sony anymore, at least not without a 10 year warranty.

  15. OK camera

Had it a year and a half, taken well over 3,000 pictures and videos. Press the power button and take a picture in seconds, a great feature for sudden photo-ops. Video is good quality with decent sound. Overall an entry-level camera, it doesn’t take bad pictures, but not going to ‘wow’ anyone either. After about 2,000 pics, it started wearing out and is slowly dying to which I am looking to replace it. Doesn’t like direct sunlight. Kinda bulky. Eats batteries, buy rechargeable ones! Sony is a great company, save some money, and buy one of their better cameras, you’ll be happier!

I’ve had my camera for a few years now. I have noticed if you are in direct sunlight, it will not turn on. Now I am seeing that it won’t turn on even in the house. If you tilt it a little it will come on or if you turn it to see your pics or to camcorder mode. Then it will stay on. I am not so happy with that. But it takes awesome pics.

Had this camera for not even 3 weeks and I used it yesterday and I couldn’t take pictures. It allowed me to view pictures but when I switched to camera or video mode to take pictures or film it’ll shut itself off and the lens protector won’t even shut off and protect it….

Got this camera for my son for Christmas. I have a Nikon L4 and now I want a DSC600. One of the things I like the best is the camera response time. No shutter lag with this one. It takes beautiful clear photos. We also burn pictures to cd so the lack of AV outlet is no problem. My Nikon also takes movie clips with no AV outlet. I like that it has a viewfinder because you get more zoom with the viewfinder, plus if your LCD goes bad you can use the viewfinder. All in all I think it is a wonderful camera and I paid less than $150.

I bought this camera for under $200 for my son. He took good care of it but the LCD screen stopped working after 3 months. I contacted Sony and they said return it for warranty service. Upon receipt they claimed it was impactr damage. After several calls to Sony customer services they say there’s nothing they can do. I have many cameras in this price range at work that have held up under consistant use much better. Buy a Canon or Nikon.

  22. Good point & shoot if subject still
    N. J. Wojc

    By: N. J. Wojc
    February 10, 2006 @ 10:26 AM

PROS: Easy to use. Menus and manuals are clear. Powerful flash. Don’t need Sony memory cards.

CONS: Camera does not come with AC adapter, NiMH batteries, charger or have an A/V outlet.

If subjects are still, photos are crystal clear up to 11 by 14 inches and colors are realistic indoors or outdoors. Outdoor photos were bright with natural colors and no noise was noted. However, I noted some blurring in pictures of my dog running in 2 of 5 photos. The LCD washes out in bright sunlight. Indoor photos of my grandson were a little blurred in 3 of 6 photos. When flash used in low light conditions, skin tones had a slight orange tint. The AF illuminator works well but unnerves some people as it is very bright. I liked the ability to review all camera settings of photos but you are limited on the settings that you can change. You can’t change aperture settings.

The camera never selected an ISO higher than 320 regardless of lighting conditions. It did select apertures of 5.1 and 6.3 outdoors. You can change ISO settings but noise appears at ISO 400 and increases a lot with each ISO increase. The zoom lens worked well and quietly. It only projects out from the camera about ¼ inch which I liked. Movie mode is great. I “burn” photos from my PC to a CD, and show the CD on my TV via my DVD player, so the lack of an A/V outlet did not affect me. Note: older DVD players can’t play R/W CDs.
