This unit *never* had any problems, not a single disc wasted and burned about 200 pieces. Updated the BIOS to write 8x and no problem…it works brilliantly.

Piece of crap
By: James
February 8, 2006 @ 9:35 PM05ppm2>
The Sony DRU-530A is a piece of crap. I purchased it back in 2003 and have nothing but trouble with it. The _first_ one I bought failed to do anything at all out of the box, so I took it back to the store for a replacement. The second one (out of the box) wasted a half dozen discs (trying to burn them) – all failed. I took it back and got another replacement. This one worked _marginally_ till now – still failing burns for no reason every once in a while (I’ve probably only burned 20 or so discs in total). Now it fails to even play DVD moview from Blockbuster (no they aren’t scratched). At first it would just think there was no disc in the drive about 1/2 the time… now it makes bad noises when spinning up the DVD… and ejects the tray with the disc still spinning at Mach 3!
I paid a premium (over cheaper brands) when I bought the drive because I used to think Sony products were quality. I know better now… I’ll NEVER buy another Sony drive again! What a complete piece of JUNK! Avoid these suckers like the plague!

I purchased my DVD Burner in Nov 2003, when it first came out. I have had no problems burning anything. It has worked fantastic for me in burning all types of media, music and copy protected movies. I would think that it’s the type of software used to burn your media/movies. I used the now taken off the market, DVD XCopy. Never any problems. I’ve been burning movies for the past 2-3 years with my burner and still working great. Plus, I paid the original price of $249.99 because it was just put on the market. I even used Nero and the software provided with it, no problems at all. Thumbs up. I am a total Sony Fany.

I have Only been able to burn 1 DVD and it didn’t work right. It just says not enough room on disc. On a Pentium 4 2.0 Ghz running Nero Enterprise addition Windows XP. Don’t waist the money. I am taking this waste of space out of the way and getting a DVD burner that works.

Great Drive
By: Carlos
April 3, 2005 @ 3:25 PM53ppm4>
Had this drive for over 1 year, NO problems ripping, burning DVD’s +/- and CD-R’s. I have not even done the firmware update. Will do that soon.
It appears from the reviews that this drive either DOES SUPER WELL…or it is a complete BOMB….. I think the difference is the system/software people are using… I use NERO SUITE 6.6 (World’s best DVD-/+R-CD-R software PERIOD) on a Pentium 4-1.8Ghz.
**Warning** Roxio Burning software performs “RAPE” procedures on certain systems and drives… it OVERwrites new ATAPI drivers over the winXP/NT/2000 native drivers..and conflics with other burning software EVEN WHEN UNINSTALLED. Like I said roxio software may work, and if it works for you, then great, but it may interefere with the drive or other burning software/tools.
.. this is a great drive…particularly for the price.. I paid twice as much a year ago for what you can get it now.

Sony, no longer the one and only...
By: MojoDog
July 2, 2004 @ 4:30 PM12ppm7>
I used to be a Sony diehard, but when I purchased this drive I was nothing but disappointed. First it failed to burn DVDs (any), and would lock up. Returned it for another, which worked somewhat better, but I never got particularly great speeds. Then one day, while trying to burn a CD-R, the drive craps out and won’t read anything, any format! I will never buy a Sony drive again!

I have benchmarked this drive, put it through a rigorous regime of different media. Different extractions encoding/decoding, playback and speed comparisons. WIth the firmware 2.1a this is the best one for your money. I paid $ 124.
All this while in SLAVE setting.

I’ve had the Sony DRU-530A for three months now. It has consistently performed well with not a problem to report. The firmware upgrade was a bonus and went smoothly. Quite fast and reliable, I have had no reason to regret the purchase. The included PowerDVD5 software is really appreciated and has made watching DVD’s an even better treat.

Fails drivetest, yet sony says OK
By: ted.saylor
April 12, 2004 @ 2:58 PM39ppm4>
Couldn’t read a CD-R that I’ve used in many many computers (utility disk). Ran sony drivetest util. Burns DVD’s, but fails on CD-R’s (locks up drive). Put in SONY ticket #1357721. Girl says drivetest utility not accuracte and drive OK! Says SONY not guaranteeing ability to read CD-R’s (especially if writed by Adaptec software).
Sorry I bought drive at this time.

Idiot Go Buy One
By: flipman
March 13, 2004 @ 4:49 AM59pam3>
First of all who said this was a forum? It burns CD-R’s @ 40X it say’s so on the box and it actually does… Thought that was pretty clear? Under his specs he even has it written down as only burning CD-R’s @ 24X. Learn how to read fool…. When he mentioned faster speed with lower media he was talking about burning DVD+R @8X on 4X media. I’m talking about CD-R burn speeds is where he is wrong. Didn’t you understand the part where I said “even before firmware upgrades it burns @40X….Who’s the moron?

Idiot
By: Techgeek
March 8, 2004 @ 9:40 AM43pam3>
Dude just because it says it can write at a certain speed doesn’t mean it will. He said it wrote fast on the proper media but it would not write at the faster speed on the slower rated media.
You sound like a moron.

Fast!!!
By: FlipMan
March 8, 2004 @ 3:16 AM00pam3>
Just wanted to add some corrections this reviewer made. After upgrading the firmware to 2.0A this drive now also supports DVD-R writing at 8X speed not just DVD+R. Also the reviewer said that it burns CD-R’s @ 24X… Wrong!! It burns CD-R’s at 40X right out of the box. It even say’s so right on the cover of the box. Even before any firmware upgrades. Now a burner that burns all DVD media + or – @ 8X and CD-R’s @ 40X. Now is there anything out there more well rounded? Don’t think so…..

Won't fit my Vaio
By: Dutchboy
February 28, 2004 @ 3:54 AM42pam2>
Right out of the box I noticed that this unit looked too wide. Sure enough it is 1/4″ too wide to fit the space available on my Sony Vaio. I was going to replace the DVD-ROM that came with the Vaio. It’s drive door is 5 1/4″ wide. The drive door on the DRU-530A is 5 1/2″ wide. So much for compatability within the same brand.
