Very high quality DVD performer.

If used solely as a DVD player, this machine would get top marks. I could see no difference between the DVD quality of the 777ES and the highly-regarded 999ES (single disc) player. Video performance really is top-notch.
As an SACD player, things sounded very good too, with no noticeable weaknesses.
But CD sounded weak to me, with rather harsh highs and little bloom to the sound, especially with classical music. It was inferior to the 999ES in this regard, whether using coax or optical connections. Whether the CD quality would bother others as much as me is debatable, but several discs I know very well were not presented with the richness I am used to. Female vocals seemed particularly brittle. However, improvement was possible by using the Pro Logic II circuits on my receiver which smoothed the sound and added warmth, without masking detail.
That said, as a DVD player, the quality is undeniable and the Dolby Digital sound was convincing.
This is also one of Sony’s best-looking units and the finish is excellent.
So…apart from the CD sound reservations, a very good player. It also seems to be robust, which is obviously important for a 400-disc changer.
