The worst piece of software you ever tried to use. SLOW on a Dual Xeon computer. I had given this as a gift, it was given back to me. Now I see why.

ATRAC - Get Real...

My past experiences with Sony digital music products are filled with keyboard thumping moments of pure frustration. Using their unbelivably bloated and damn right over complicated software I remember vowing to steer clear. So the case is shiny, so the device is tiny, so it is probably the world’s smallest 20GB HDD AT THE MOMENT; Nice, but why the hell doesn’t this thing play Mp3 and wma files?? That beggars belief. theres no way I would consider re-encoding my entire music collection to ATRAC, even if the sony software does do it for you, whats the point of converting from one lossy format to another? Transfer times are severely hampered as the music is converted during transfer…etc etc etc I could go on and on and on. Get an Ipod instead or a Creative or an Iriver…

Worth getting

The player is fantastic. Its small, light and has a large memory and battery life, and just feels well made.
But the software that comes with the unit is not the most well designed out there. Firstly it took me hours getting the software to even play a music files that I already had on my pc. To fix the problem I had to remove a windows update, but after that it worked fine.
The second problem is that the player dose not play mp3âs which is strange seeing as itâs a mp3 player, but it uses sonyâs own format. Converting is a slow process. For example last night I left it running for just over 6h and it only went through 129 cdâs, the really annoying problems is that I have labels all the tracks but the software only carried 1/2 the names across.
Now ok it takes a lot of time to convert the tracks but once converted they fly across, also they sound exactly the same as mp3âs as far as I can tell (and Iâm still using the basic headphones that came with the unit). The good things is that as I said I transferred 129 cdâs across but it only used about 3.5gig of the 20 (well 18.5), which is good as I also used the mid range of 64kbps.
The player may not be the most complicated around with the most modes/settings, but it can hold around 13,000 tracks using its format (I have heard from many sites), also the battery life or 30h (charges in 3hâs) canât be sniffed at especially seeing its size and weight.
My advice is that this is a fantastic gadget and well worth looking into, even though its expensive it well worth the money if you donât mind playing a little with the software and leaving it running overnight converting your mp3âs.
