I am trying to make disc that play automaticallu when inserted. I keep getting a front end menu I don’t want. The first product created didn’t have this menu, but now they all do when finalized. Otherwise its great to work with.

Already paid for itself in one use

I read the poor reviews, but consider what the machine was specifically designed to do, and what the majority of people want from it. To put their own non-copywritten VHS tapes onto a blank DVD. I did this with a 15 year old VHS tape of my sons birth. Saving that tape to DVD is invaulable. The VHS tape had gottem mildewy over the years and had broken the tape ywice (which I was able to repair). Now that I have my tape on DVD, it’s basically forever. And I can have copies burned of the DVD now. I paid a total of $637 for my Sony RDR-VX500 from Sears. That includes a full 2 years parts and labor warrenty.
The owners manual is a bit difficult to understand if you are not familiar with electronic or computer jargon. I’ve had no problem with Finalizing discs so far but will keep aware of it. I do not know who to use all the features yet but it is operating as expected

Sound drops, Interruptions every 10

Completely dissatisfied with this product. Every time I attempt to burn a DVD from my DV Camcorder I lose the sound for about 10 seconds then recording stops all together, with a message that says, “writing information to disc” then another message that says, “failed”. It happens every time! In my opinion this product is a complete waste of $400.00. Garbage.

iLink connection is useless
By: Dan

Like the user below, every time I try burning DVDs using data from my Sony TRV-25 camcorder using the iLink connection, there are noticeable audio dropouts that usually last for a few seconds. The video seems to record fine, but there are usally at least 2 audio dropouts on every DVD I burn :( Since burning DVDs from my camcorder using the iLink connection feature was the main reason why I bought this unit, I am very disappointed. I can, however, burn DVDs using the standard composite RCA cable connector cables. This is the first Sony product I’ve ever bought that had any kind of issue at all. What a bummer. Sony’s quality assurance testing group was obviously asleep at the wheel during testing. How about ensuring that the product works before you market and sell it to the public? I will be returning the unit. If making DVDs from the data on your camcorder is important to you and you’d like to use the iLink connection, I’d stay away from this unit! There must be something out there that works.

DV - DV Sound Drops out
By: R Davis
March 30, 2005 @ 1:33 PM27ppm3>
When connecting a camcorder (e.g. Sony TRV-8) DV out to the DVD iLink input, the sound constantly drops in and out. So far NO FIX found for this malady which makes this unit unusable since this is the whole reason I bought it.

When it works it's great...

Have just talked to Sony 3rd tier support (top of the heap) and they tell me to return my third unit for repair. Luckily I bought it from Crutchfield who have been great throughout. There is a problem with all of the units when they try to finalize a disk (required so that other players can read it). 1st unit worked for about 25 disks, 2nd unit was good for about a hundred (I am dubbing VHS to DVD) and the third was DOA. The workaround is to unplug the unit for a few minutes and reboot. This does not work all the time. Eventually the 2nd unit couldn’t make disks that it could read. This is a new product for Sony and they (technical support) told me that this has not been raised as a serious issue. When it works, it works great. When it doesn’t you end up with pricy coasters. If you buy I would make sure and get it from someone like Crutchfield who give you 30 days to exchange it for a new one. If I hadn’t had the problems I would give it a 10 – I don’t know how to improve it.
