Summary

Two screens are better than one. From keeping an e-mail client at the ready for incoming messages, to creating a space to pile IM windows, a second monitor can be a godsend when it comes to accomplishing two things at once on a computer. Unfortunately, if you count yourself among the road warriors who rely on notebook computers to get things done, one screen (and usually a small one) is the best you can do. But Lenovo has changed that.

The Lenovo ThinkPad W700ds is the very first notebook computer to actually sport two displays: a 17-inch main display, plus a second 10.6-inch display that slides out the right side like a leaf in a dining room table. It even pivots forward to provide the optimum viewing angle alongside the main display. What you get is a combined 3200 x 1968 of desktop real estate – enough to dwarf even most desktop setups.

Unfortunately, the W700ds also dwarfs the competition in size, measuring a beefy 2.2 inches thick and weighing 11.1 pounds. But performance follows suit, with a choice of Intel Core 2 Extreme quad-core processors, up to 8GB of RAM, and even the option for dual hard drives in a RAID array, providing up to 960GB of total storage.

Twice the screen won’t cost you twice the price, but it will come pretty close. Pricing on the ThinkPad 700ds starts at an impressive $3,663. More information can be found in Lenovo’s press release.
