I had this set for 4 years. Broke down 5 times. I just put it out to the curb for free. Toshiba should have given everyone that bought this set their money back.

Great picture! Other than that it is a piece of junk. Bought the TV in Aug 2005 and paid $2,000 and the extended warranty for appx. $500. First thing to go was the lamp ballast in Aug or Sept 2007, followed by the bulb shortly after (late ‘07 or early ‘08). Just had it serviced again and they replaced the lamp and lamp ballast(again). These were installed on July 30, 2009. now I’ll be watching TV and it will just shut off by itself, randomly. Service techs were just here on Aug 11, 2009, yet again. This time they are going to replace the power supply and the light engine. I’m now waiting for parts, yet again, and hoping they will replace or buy back my TV as to the cost of these repairs are high. Talking to Toshiba is like talking to a wall. They know about all of these issues but yet do NOTHING!!! Don’t you just love a company that stands behind its product. Luckily all of this was covered under my extended warranty which expires tomorrow Aug. 13. Now I will be responsible for this maintenance disaster. These are some prices of parts found online if I install them myself. LAMP- $160.00-$220.00 Lamp Ballast $128-$160 Power Supply $133-$150 Light Engine $753.00 So far my $2,000 TV has had $1,462-$1,773 worth of parts put in it. So you can figure appx. $50 a month added to your cable bill to watch TV on this set. I find it funny that Best Buy, Wal-Mart, and other similar stores do not carry any brand of DLP TV’s anymore. If you do find one it is probably because they are still stuck with it and HEED MY WARNING……… DON’T BUY IT.

Agree with most of reviews from great picture to bulb gobbler. Have replaced two bulbs in 30 months but we are heavy users so…. However screen is now completely dead and seems to reject connection with dish when trying to turn on. Is this lamp machine or ballast? trying not to get to bent over when tech comes out. ty

I posted the April 9, 2008 comment. It is now December 7, 2008 and the lamp went again. We watch tv on the low bright option and we truly do not watch that much television. Thank goodness my Best Buy warranty is still in effect. My TV will now be on its sixth bulb since the purchase in 5/05. My warranty will run out in 5/09. I may be getting rid of it once I have to pay for the expensive replacement bulbs.

I bought this TV in Jan 05 with a 4 year warranty from Best Buy. The lamp went out in August of 06… Best Buy came and fixed it. All was well until May 08 when the lamp went out again… Best buy came and fixed it. Two days later the lamp and ballast went out, Best Buy came and fixed it… I’m afraid when my extended warranty runs out in January 2009 I will have to take this TV to the landfill.

We purchased our 52HM84 in August of 2005 – replaced 1st bulb in December 2006 – then replaced again in April 2008 – now it just went bad again ! When the TV works it has a great picture, but then just all of a sudden it goes black and you know the bulb went again. So, we have spent $600 on bulbs so far for our $2,000 TV – surely there is a better way !

Love the TV but hate the lamps. Purchased in 5/2005; replaced the lamp in 11/2005 which Toshiba covered. Replaced the lamp again in 11/06 under the extended warranty. Lamp just went out again 4/08. Luckily I found out my warranty covers unlimited bulb replacements until 2009. Don’t need to pay for the lamps, but have to stare at a black screen until it gets here!

I purchased this television on April 6, 2005. Ever since I first bought it I have run the television on “lamp high bright” for a brighter and sharper picture quality. The user’s manual says the lamp life is considerably shorter on high; although, my lamp burned out two days ago on February 30th, 2008. I’d say that’s pretty good lamp life. Now let’s see how long the replacement lasts that Best Buy is installing on Tuesday….

We purchased this TV in 08/2005 and exactly 3-months later the lamp went out and had to be replaced. They insisted it was normal, but under warranty and should last a lot longer. Not 2 years after being replaced it is out AGAIN. Toshiba will do nothing, not even exchange for another TV. Thankfully I bought extended warranty, but am now being told it only covers one lamp under mfg warranty and one under my extended warranty. The extended warranty we purchased was for an additional 4 yrs. Toshiba says they cannot guarantee how long the lamps will lasts it could be months or years, but with this technology you just have to replace it. The store we purchased it from states it is approx $450 to replace each time, besides being without a TV for 2-3 weeks. DO NOT BUY. Toshiba obviously does not back their products for even such a short period of time considering you pay over $2,000 for the TV.

I have a 62HM95 and the bulb blew just after a year. I talked to a representative from Toshiba and they said there was nothing they could do. Got a replacement off of Ebay and then found out about the unadvertised year extension of the bulb warranty while searching to see if anyone else was having the same problem. I called Toshiba back and they said, “oh sure we’ll send a new one out immediately!!!” That would have been nice to know when I first called. If I hadn’t found the post about the extended warrenty they would have never given me a bulb. Now I am just over two years of ownership and the light engine goes out. Once again, Toshiba is unwilling to do anything, say this is a rare occurance… B.S. That the same thing they said about the bulb. Do I spend another $800 on a already $3000+ television? I will never recommend or buy a Toshiba again!!! This is the reason Best Buy doesn’t carry their DLP TVs anymore!!!

This TV is a piece of you know what. I spent $2500.00 on this TV less than 3 years ago and I’ve already spent another $500 on lamps, I’ve had two go out now, and now they say I need a new color wheel. And that will be $800.00 – $1000.00. I would recommend you avoid this TV like the plague.

I really like this set. I did not run my lamp on high bright until it started to dim slightly (after 32 months). It finally went. I still have extended warranty, so I’ll see how it performs with a new lamp. I expect another 34 months… But I plan on buying a spare lamp in case they become hard to find in another 3 yrs.

What a dissapointment. I won’t be buying Toshiba again.

Toshiba service centers says the color wheel is bad and I have to replace the color wheel and light engine assembly, over $850. Im throwing this piece of junk in the trash and buying a new LCD tv, NOT Toshiba

The TV has excellent picture qulaity in HD , DVD, and regular SD. I bought my TV in February of 2005 and my first bulb just blew (Sept. 2007). I figure I have somewhere betweem 6000-7000 hour of bulb life on the TV. I puirchased the extended warranty for Leons and they covered the bulb. So far excellent purchase. It’s important to avoid turning the TV on and off while the bulb is cooling down. I also have my lamp set to low power (brightness).

You can also purchase the Bulbs on Ebay from Toshiba authorized sellers for $155.00 US – CDN. So the average cost of running this TV is reasonable.

I’ve had my set for 2 years now and I love it. Picture is great, just like i got it yesterday. I never had problem with the bulb. I really don’t expect it to last to much longer but at least I can renew my TV’s brightness. With a [lasma once it starts fading after 2 years there’s no getting that brightness back (same for LCDs) . After 6-7 years its garbage time. I’ll take changing a bulb over throwing my TV in the garbage anytime. So all you babies complaining about the light bulb stop crying, at least you don’t have to throw out your TV.

I also believe they are coming out with a bulb made out of LEDs that should last over 20,000 hrs.

Now have a tech out who says that there are some major internal problems on this TV and that the ballast and wiring was bad from the get go, so I probably now have to deal with Toshiba’s attorneys.

have this TV (62HMX84) for 15 months, first lamp went out in 7 months, got a free replacement from Toshiba because of 12 month warranty, 7 months later lamp went out again, called Toshiba about it, they don’t cover warranty no more, so it will cost $200 bucks for a new lamp, if you can afford spending $200 bucks every 6-7 months for the lamp, go ahead and buy this TV, definitely not worth it.

The TV was doing great until it went blank last night and found out the lamp is busted. TV was purchased in March 2005 (20 months) I guess I was still it last for almost two years. I ordered the lamp in Vancouver as there is no direct Toshiba parts store in Calgary. It will take them another week to deliver. No TV for a whole week and hopefully the new lamp will fix the problem. The cost of the lamp is $342.00 including shipping. I was told that the new lamp is only carries a warranty for 6 months. This probably the most expensive TV to operate everytime the lamp get busted. Lessons learn, never buy a projection TV as the lamp do not last long than a ordinary TV CRT/LCD and Plasma.

    September 7, 2006 @ 9:08 AM

We’ve had our Toshiba 52HM84 for exactly one year now. We got it after purchasing a JVC, which went out in 5 weeks – bad lamp. That replacement set then went out in 3 days – bad lamp. This Toshiba has a great picture but here I am again with a very expensive lamp burned out in one year. We are gone most of the day at work – so not that many hours that the TV is being used. Then I have to wait 3 days to get service under the extended warranty. If I buy a lamp and do it myself, I void the warranty. What a crock! We are rethinking the whole issue now.

Terrible product! Mine gave out just 5 weeks after purchase!!!!

Tech told me it was a faulty lamp. Called Toshiba & ordered a new lamp, which had to be installed by us. The TV still did not work. Called and had a tech come back to our house, who then informed us the old and new lamps were good. Something wrong with TV. I called Future Shop and demanded a full refund or new TV, but not a Toshiba. We now have a Hitachi 50V525…so far so good. I would not recommend Toshiba to anyone!

Mine broke down twice within 13 months. That’s what I call junk. Lots of people have the same problem. Don’t beleive these poeople who setup their tv and the next day give a perfect score to this TV. The technician told me they have serious light bulbs problems and they cost 270$ to 350$. Who wants to pay that every year?

I’ve had this TV for about 6-8 months now and am loving it! Excellent picture quality! Although I mostly watch DVD’s, even on non-HD broadcasts (Bell ExpressVu) on most channels the PQ is great! I wish it had a DVI connector though, for a home PC, but I may just get a DVI-HDMI adapter. After reading some of the reviews pertaining to bulb replacement, I’m glad I bought the extended warranty through Leon’s, but so far so good! I would (and have) recommend this product.

TOSHIBA WARRANTY STINKS – I have a 52HM84 the bulb is bust after 8 months about 600 hours instead of the estimated 8,000 and Toshiba has no bulb for the last 25 days and still waiting a bit extreme for $3000 TV and warranty repair – I wonder if Toshiba has some defect that the bulbs are going after about 6 months and they are running short on them.

Want to buy a TV that it needs a new bulb ($275) every 600 hours instead of every 8,000 say every 6 months rather than 6 years and Oh you don’t have a TV for a month while Toshiba finds a lamp.

AFTER MY EXPERIENCE I WOULD NOT BUY THIS TV EVEN THOUGH THE PICTURE IS GOOD – I BOUGHT DLP FOR RELIABILITY HELL I COULD GET A PLASMA IF I WANTED A HEADACHE

Picture quality is terrible with DirecTV . I hear picture is good with HD but if you use any other source, forget it. Shop around people this is a bad one. Don’t expect Toshiba to help you. Bought mine at Bestbuy and so far it looks like I’m stuck with a lemon. You have been warned!

  46. ASTONISHED PQ!!! 62HM84

it’s the best RPTV I have reviewed in last 2 years(Optoma, Sony, LG, Sammy, Delta) here in Taipei, Taiwan. thou it isn’t always the winner in every test, it’s definitely be #1 in most tests! I check its PQ by cable, DVE (1080i/720p), HD from JP sat DBS, all give stunning vivid PQ!
but 2 issues: 1 is ghosting, 2 is gray bars in 4:3/POP modes. hope Tosh can release FW to correct both minor drawbacks soon.
if you have any comments/tips, welcome to share.

  47. replacement Lamp

The lamp on my set burned out in less than 6 months. No replacement lamp available. The company does not have any. I would not buy this product. I paid $3,499.95 for this set and I am sorry I did. My advise is do not buy this set. I called the company and nobody cares if your set does not have a workable lamp. Good picture, (when it has a picture) but what good is the set without a picture.

After looking at Mits, Sammys and a couple of others, I ran onto the Toshiba and my jaw dropped. The picture clarity was head and shoulders above the others. I was told the picture would not be very much less clear if just plugged in to cable. They were right! I am very happy with this set. Only negative is the replacement lamp – found one on-line for $300+ and ordered it. It is backordered for 10-15 days. Figured I’d get one in before I needed it and I was right. You will need one sooner or later. Better get one or order one now or prepare to be without your set for an indefinite period while you come up with one.

Great quality. Make sure you get the stand with it. Finishes the whole look.

DVD’s are amazing to watch. Watched Shrek2 and clarity is unbeatable.
    HDTV is great too.
Regular digital tv channels are good also.

I looked at all the other DLP s on the market and waited for Toshiba to come out before I made a decision. I sure glad I did !!!! My family and friends can not believe what a nice picture.
