Nokia celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Nokia Research Center by unveiling their newest concept smart phone, the Nokia Gem.
The Gem really is an interesting concept in that the entire phone is a touchscreen, including the sides. The Finnish handset maker calls it the gem “because polished precious stones have several sides.”
Interestingly, the phone’s touchscreen changes depending on what function you choose. For example, if you choose the map function, the front display is a detailed close-up map of your location. The back side displays a broader, more zoomed out view.
It’s a pretty cool idea but the video from Nokia doesn’t really explain how to avoid accidentally activating functions or butt-dialing someone when the phone is in a pocket or purse. However, if they have a lock function this could be a cool dev-kit in the future.
