Partial to a bit of Facebook gifting? Facebook certainly hopes so, because they get a cut of every sale. The social networking giant is working hard to increase revenue through its Gifts service in the run up to the holiday shopping season, announcing on Thursday the inclusion of a number of new retail partners, which means a ton of new gift options for buyers.
New partners include babyGap, Fab, Brookstone, Dean & Deluca, L’Occitane, Lindt, ProFlowers, Random House, and NARS Cosmetics. Members of the social network will also be able to gift TV shows and music with subscriptions to Hulu Plus, Pandora, Rdio and more.
The range of choice will further expand in the coming weeks as more retail partners are added, Facebook said. Wine from Robert Mondavi Winery and Chandon, for example, is set to be included in the service soon.
Users of the social networking site can send gifts by visiting the Timeline of another user and clicking on the Gift tab, which takes you to a page packed with goodies from third-party product partners. From there it’s simply a case of selecting a gift and tapping out a message on a virtual card (oh, and coughing up the cash too, of course). The item will be delivered to the recipient – direct from the retail partner – in a Facebook-branded gift box.
Facebook’s e-commerce model allows it to be a player in the market without having to deal with the logistical challenges that come with managing inventories and shipping goods.
Earlier this month, the company incorporated its Gifts feature into its iOS app, allowing iPhone users to send presents to friends and family right from their mobile device.
