LG Packs Vudu Streaming Movie Service into NetCast Televisions

LG Electronics has announced it will be rolling access to Vudu’s high-definition streaming movie service into its NetCast line of high-definition LCD and plasma televisions beginning next month—and existing LG Broadband TV owners will also be able to add the Vudu service to their existing sets. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, but adding Vudu service provides customers purchase and rental access to a significant catalog of high-definition titles in Vudu’s HDX format, supporting 1080p resolution and Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 surround sound.

China Blocking Internet Services as Tiananmen Anniversary Nears

In 1989, pro-democracy students, intellectuals, and activists began staging protests in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square, culminating on June when the Chinese government sent in tanks to break up the protests…an action which led to photographer Jeff Widener’s world-famous "Tank Man" image of an unknown, unarmed man halting a column of four tanks simply by standing in front of them and refusing to move. The number of civilians and protesters killed or injured in the crackdown is still unknown, but some estimates rise into the thousands.

Insider Attacks To Rise, Microsoft Warns

Insider Attacks To Rise, Microsoft Warns

One of the biggest threats facing companies, especially in this economy where so many are being laid off, is the “insider attack,” and it’s going to rise in the future, according to Microsoft.

Doug Leland, head of the new Identity and Security unit at the company, told the BBC:

"The malicious insider is classed as the greatest security concern because they have access, and relatively easy access, to corporate assets."

How bad is it now? Last year a study by Verizon showed that insider breaches were behind 18% of all attacks – a staggering figure. And just last week, another study, this one by the Ponemon Institute, discovered that 88% of data breaches arose from staff negligence.

Broadband For All Europeans?

Broadband For All Europeans?

Should everyone have the right to broadband Internet access? That’s the issue before the European Commission at the moment, and they’re leaning toward yes. They’re bringing forward reviewing what basic telecoms services Europeans can expect, according to the BBC.

Under EC rules, when the majority of people in the European Union enjoy a telecom service, it becomes one all Europeans should have access to. But at the moment, figures indicate that only 36% of EU citizens have broadband access.

However, when announcing the review, EU Telecoms Commissioner Viviane Reding said:

HTC S740’s Got Your Numbers And Your QWERTY

HTC S740

As long as we’re talking about 3.5G HSDPA smartphones that aren’t likely to make it to North America (ahem), we might as well mention the HTC S740, a follow-up to the HTC Touch Diamond that packs 7.2 Mbps HSDPA/WCDMA 900/2100 MHz access for use in Europe, along with quad-band GSM/EDGE and a standalone GPS receiver. The S740 runs Windows MObile 6.1—and so offers access to Outlook, mobile versions of Office applications, Mobile IE, Exchange capability, Windows Media Player, etc., etc.—what might really set the S740 is its form factor. All put together, it’s just a phone with a keypad. Slide it open, the S740 packs a complete QWERTY keyboard for all your messaging needs.

IOC Surprised at Olympics Net Censorship

It’s well-known that “The Great Firewall of China” is the world’s largest Internet access control and censorship system on the planet, regularly blocking Chinese Internet users’ access to sites and information the Chinese government believes to be in some way harmful to its citizenry. Although Beijing’s host contract for the 2008 summer Olympic Games stipulates media covering the games would be allowed unfettered Internet access, China in May indicated it would not be offering unrestricted Internet access to anyone at the games, including foreign media. And sure enough: now that forieng media are turning up to cover the games, they’re finding their Internet access is locked down.

AT&T Opens Starbucks Wi-Fi to iPhones

There hasn’t been an official announcement from any of the companies involved, but now that AT&T has officially taken over operation of Starbucks’ in-store Wi-Fi hotspots, a raft of iPhone users are reporting that they can access Starbucks Wi-Fi access points free of charge. The system just requires users enter their phone number at a login screen in order to connect to the Starbucks access points.

China Warned About Olympics Internet Access

China Warned About Olympics Internet Access

Inspectors for the International Olympic Committee have told Chinese authorities that they expect China to offer unrestricted Internet access for the duration of the Olympic games—as stipulated in the host city contract Beijing committed to when it was selected as host for the 2008 Summer Olympics.

China runs the most extensive Internet surveillance and censorship operation on the planet, routinely restricting Chinese citizens’ access to information and media sources around the world. The Chinese government is usually the first cited in reports decrying net censorship and online speech restrictions: China has imprisoned online journalists and bloggers critical of the Beijing government or who speak out in favor of democracy; more recently, China has shut down access to sites carrying information on unrest in Tibet.

Digi Offers to Bridge Cellular and Wi-Fi

Minnesota’s Digi International has introduced its Wi-Point 3G, a three-in-one network router that combined Wi-Fi and Ethernet capabilities with a PC card-based, 3G cellular router. With the Wi-Point 3G, users can set up secure, high-speed ad-hoc networks with Internet access from a wide range of locations.

“The Digi Wi-Point 3G allows remote sites and devices to wirelessly connect to the Internet or securely integrate into a corporate network—even if that remote device happens to be driving down the highway,” said Digi’s senior VP of global sales and marketing Larry Kraft, in a statement. “It is ideal for applications such as temporary networks, remote Wi-Fi hotspots, mobile/transportation deployments, disaster recovery, security and more.”

AT&T has announced it is throwing open the doors of its nationwide Wi-Fi network to its more than 10 million subscribers to currently subscribe to 1.5 Mbps DSL or greater broadband service. The unlimited access will be available at no additional charge for users who sign up through the AT&T Web site, and will provide unlimited Wi-Fi access at more than 9,000 McDonald’s restaurants and more than 1,000 other Wi-Fi hotspots operated by Wayport.
