Libraries Draw in Young People

Libraries Draw in Young People

Even in an age of widely available Wi-Fi, ultracompact laptops, and constantly plummeting tech prices, it appears that libraries continue to be a major source of information for young Americans. A new survey by the the Pew Internet & American Life Project showed that Generation Y, Americans aged 18 to 30, are actually the biggest users of libraries, despite popular conceptions of young people shirking libraries for the Internet.

The study attempted to find exactly where people turn with problems and questions, and ended up revealing that 40 percent of Gen Yers choose the library. Of Americans 30 and older, only 20 percent would use library resources to solve a problem, making Gen Yers twice as likely to use them.

MySpace Plans to Add Parental Notification

We realize that keeping an eye on today’s techno-savvy kids can be difficult for many of today’s over-tired, overburdened, sleep-deprived parents…so the next best thing might be to have computers keep an eye on the kids automatically, right?

To that end, the popular social networking Web site MySpace is planning to offer free parental notification software in a bid to appease parents concerned that their children may be engaging in risky or provocative behavior online. The move might also serve to fend off government critics who say MySpace should verify the ages of its users and raise the site’s age limit from 14 to 16.

MySpace is Getting SO Old!

If anything’s gonna make MySpace uncool among today’s youth, this might be it: according to new market research from comScore Media Metrix, leading social networking sites can attract users of very different age demographics—and over half the visitors to social networking juggernaut MySpace.com are now over 35 years of age!

“While the top social networking sites are typically viewed as directly competing with one another, our analysis demonstrates that each site occupies a slightly different niche,” commented Jack Flanagan, executive vice president of comScore Media Metrix, in a release. “There is a misconception that social networking is the exclusive domain of teenagers, but this analysis confirms that the appeal of social networking sites is far broader.”

Google’s Gmail Faces Trademark Claim

London-based The Market Age said it had at its peak a year ago 1,000 customers representing 300 banks signed up for its core “Pronet” Web-based research application service, of which “Gmail” is a primary research product.

“When the news came out about Google’s Gmail last week, I went to the U.S. patent and trademark authorities. I thought maybe we were in trouble. But they hadn’t (registered),” Shane Smith, group chief executive of Market Age, told Reuters on Wednesday.

Dlink DI-624+ Wireless Router Review

Quote from the review at PyroPort:

“In this day and age I would expect most of you to have a broadband connection of some flavour. Most of us here in the UK have either an ADSL modem or a cable modem but with the ‘always on’ aspect of broadband comes the age old problem of security, firewalls being the most common defence be it a software solution or a hardware device such as the DLink unit we have here today.”
