AOL Switches AIM Express to Flash

AOL Switches AIM Express to Flash

Nomadic IM addicts rejoice: AOL just released a new version of AIM Express, its instant messaging client that doesn’t need to be installed on a computer. The new Flash-based version adds many features that were formerly exclusive to the clunky downloadable AIM.

By switching to Flash, developers were able to enable tabbed conversations, status messages that stick whether or not the user is online, a mode that allows users to send outgoing text messages instead of IMs, and even a “buddy rollover” that shows a user’s buddy icon and status message when moused over.

AOL Brings IM to Hearing Impaired

AOL has released a beta version 6.8 of its AIM instant messaging program that includes a Real-Time IM feature that lets users see each letter IM users type in real time, rather than waiting for a friend or buddy to press the Enter or Return key and send a whole phrase or sentence. Developed with guidance from Gallaudet University and the Trace Research and Development Center at the University of Wisconsin, the new capability lets instant messaging function in a way immediately familiar to users of TTY devices, commonly used by the deaf or hearing-impaired in place of telephones.

AOL Intros New Mobile Search Services

AOL Intros New Mobile Search Services

At the CTIA wireless trade show this week in San Francisco, AOL is introducing a raft of new mobile services designed to get savvy mobile users relying on AOL for their mobile information and communications needs—and that, in turn, will help draw traffic to AOL’s content and digital advertising businesses. AOL’s new mobile offerings build off some of AOL’s strongest online properties, including AIM, AOL Email, AOL CityGuide, MapQuest, AOL Search, Moviefone, and Winamp—plus a WAP-enabled version of the AOL.com portal.

AOL Rolls Out AIM 6.5

AOL has released the latest version of its instant messaging application, AIM 6.5 for Windows. The new version doesn’t offer any new compatibility with other instant messaging services (e.g., Windows Live Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, Jabber, etc.) but does add features that let users stream their buddies’ non-DRM-protected music, more easily message cell phones, and tap into multiplayer casual games.

AOL Delivers New VoIP Enhancement

AOL yesterday launched a new VoIP communications enhancement to their AIM service which gives users a free, local number and voicemail. The new AIM Phoneline offering is available as an updated version of the AIM Triton service now in beta testing.

AIM Phoneline, said AOL, provides a dedicated local phone number for each AIM screen name. The offering, which integrates with the AIM service and buddy list feature, offers a variety of functionality to users for free, including always-on voicemail delivered to the user’s AIM Mail inbox; mobile alerts via cell phone to notify users whenever they have new voicemail; unlimited inbound calling from friends on landlines, mobile phones and other PCs; and, when signed in to the AIM service, screening incoming calls with Caller ID, answering calls and talking as long as they’d like.

AOL Announces Open AIM Platform

AOL yesterday announced a new initiative which invites developers, online communities and sites and services to develop tools based upon the AIM platform. Enrollment in the Open AIM program and use of the AIM Software Development Kit for developing non-enterprise instant messaging solutions with up to 250,000 log-ins per day or two million log-ins per month is free.

The Open AIM program, said AOL, will allow developers the ability to make use of the AIM platform so they can build customized plug-ins, stand-alone communications clients and popular application ‘mash-ups’ that access AOL’s global instant messaging network. These tools will

WebEx Makes AOL’s Business Buddy List

American Online and WebEx have teamed up to create AIM Pro, a version of AOL’s Instant Messenger specially geared towards business users.

“We are extremely pleased to be working with WebEx to offer at-work users a customized AIM experience that works in a professional environment and addresses today’s business communications needs,” said Brian Curry, AOL’s VP of Premium and Subscription Services, AOL, Inc. “Co-created with the recognized business collaboration leader, the new service will bring business-class IM, online conferencing, collaboration, desktop sharing and advanced multimedia services to the global workplace.”

AOL Readies AIM Triton Service

AOL today announced they would be releasing a preview edition of their new AIM Triton service later this week. Under beta testing since April, this new AOL feature is designed to replace the online service’s current Windows instant messaging clients.   The new AIM Triton service, AOL said, would offer a wide variety of features. These include a Plaxo-enabled address book, VoIP, an expanded buddy list which supports up to 500 contacts, a redesigned AIM Today screen, an improved file transfer service and audio streaming of over 150 AOL radio channels as well as 20 XM Satellite Radio music stations.   The beta of the AIM Triton service will be available later this week here and here.   "We have rebuilt the AIM service from the ground up to make it a powerful communications tool that offers unprecedented versatility. Our goal is to let people focus on who they want to talk to and what they want to say, instead of worrying about which software application they need to open," said Chamath Palihapitiya, vice president and general manager, AIM and ICQ, America Online, Inc. "And our new AIM Address Book enables users to quickly bring contact information for everyone they know directly into the AIM Buddy List feature – where it will always be up to date and at their finger tips."

AOL Finally Arrives at Free Web Mail Party

Ever wanted your own free email account to match your AIM instant messaging id? Starting today, you can. America Online, trying to keep up with the other free web mail Joneses, announced they would begin offering AIM Mail. This service, which will offer spam and anti-virus protection, gives users two gigabytes of storage. It is part of a larger roll out of the AIM 5.9 software.

Users wanting to sign up can visit www.aim.com and enter their AIM id and password. They will then be prompted to verify their basic information, after which a x@aim.com address will be assigned. Those wanting to access their AIM Mail later can do so by directly visiting the website or one-clicking the email link in the AIM 5.9 software.

AOL Announces AIM Mail Beta Release

AIM Mail will be available to Internet users first through the AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) service and will be available on the new AOL.com Web site in the coming months.

The new Web Mail service introduces the AIM.com e-mail domain, which is based upon one of the most popular Internet communication brands available today. AIM Mail provides industry leading spam and e-mail virus protection, giving Internet users the protection they need for a safer online experience, and additional features including AIM presence and instant messaging integration as well as 2 GB of online e-mail storage. The beta version of AIM Mail is available now as part of the ongoing beta test of the updated AIM 5.9 software.
