Electronics maker LG, in conjunction with th Consumer Product Safety Commission, has issued a recall for 30,000 LG 830 Spyder mobile phones due to poor voice quality on calls to 911 emergency services and difficulties maintaining phone connections. The recalled phones have software versions T83LGV03 and T83LGV04; users can check the software version on their phone by selecting “Phone Information” from the handset’s Settings menu.

IBM Backs Broadband over Power Lines

Rural Internet users left out of the loop by mainsteam Internet solutions like cable and DSL may soon have a new option thanks to a deal IBM has hammered out to begin providing broadband over power lines. On Wednesday, the company announced it had signed a $9.6 million deal with IBEC, a broadband-over-power-line (BPL) provider, to begin equipping several rural test markets with BPL technology.

Under the agreement, IBM will supply project management, oversight and training, and IBEC will supply the actual equipment, and serve as the ISP for customers. According to the Wall Street Journal, the companies will work with 13 electricity cooperatives to deliver BPL connectivity for customers across seven states: Alabama, Indiana, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, and Wisconsin.

GTA Sales Halted In Thailand After Murder

GTA Sales Halted In Thailand After Murder

Thai video game distributor New Era Interactive Media has announced it is suspending sales of Take Two Interactive’s controversial Grand Theft Auto games after a teenager confessed to committing a robbery and murder in an attempt to recreate a scene from the game.

According to Reuters, the teenager said he wanted to see if it was as easy to rob a taxi in real life as it was in the game. Although the teenager said he did not intend to kill the driver, he was arrested trying to steer the cab backwards out of a street after stabbing the 54 year-old driver with a knife. The mortally-wounded driver was in the back seat; the suspect stabbed the driver when he fought back.

Boost Lands the Motorola KRZR

Motorola might have rolled out the MOTOKRZR way back in mid-2006 when it was trying to capitalize on the starting-to-wane popularity of its RAZR phones. But Boost Mobile thinks now is the “perfect time” to add the flip phone to its lineup—specifically, its Unlimited by Boost offering available at wireless retailers as well as locations like Radio Shack, Wal-Mart, and Sprint retail stores (Boost is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sprint.)

“Now is the perfect time for us to introduce the popular MOTOKRZR to our Unlimited by Boost handset lineup,” said Boost’s VP of product development Neil Lindsay, in a statement. “We doubled our base from 224,000 to 500,000 Unlimited by Boost customers in Q4 alone, and introducing this feature-rich handset will help us keep the momentum going.”

The Web Cam As Exam Invigilator

If you’re a student at an online university, watch out. New webcam technology is going to make online exam invigilation much easier.   There’s already software available that locks a user’s computer, making it impossible to search stored files or the Internet. But something fresh from Software Secure, goes a couple of steps further.   Not only does it include fingerprint identification to stop you allowing a ringer to sit your exam, it also has a tiny webcam and microphone that are set up close to the computer. By the webcam is a reflective ball, giving a 360-degree view of the room.   Once the exam begins, both camera and microphone begin recording. Any major movement or noise is highlighted on the recording, allowing the examiner to review them afterwards, and determine whether there was any surge in writing afterwards. Leaving the room for a bathroom break followed by a fast paragraph would raise a lot of red flags, for instance.   Although it’s not foolproof, Software Secure president and CEO Douglas Winneg said that using the camera “ensures that those people that are taking classes at a distance are on a level playing field.”   One of the first to use it will be Troy University in Alabama. They have about 11,000 online students, a good percentage of whom are in the U.S. military and spread around the globe. Initially they’ll try the technology with graduate students, then undergraduates. The camera and microphone will cost students $125.   Currently, online institutions tend to do little testing, relying more on written course work. But with at least three million students enroled online, assessment and credibility have become issues.   Where exams have been carried out, they’ve tended to rely on trust, allowing students to sit exams at home unsupervised, or proctored centers, which can mean several hours of driving for some students.
