Verizon Wireless Buys Alltel for $28.1 Bln

Verizon Wireless has announced it plans to acquire U.S. regional mobile operator Alltel in a transaction valued at $28.1 billion. In geographic terms, Alltel’s service area is one of the largest in the United States, encompassing areas of 34 states in the southeast, midwest, and northern plains regions of the country, including many rural areas not currently served by Verizon. Although Alltel only handles about 13 million subscribers, the addition of Alltel should be enough for Verizon to wrest AT&T from its perch as the largest mobile operator in the United States.

Plaxo Makes Contacts with Verizon

Although contact management compnay Plaxo isn’t naming any names in its press release, the company has, in conjunction with Zingy, rolled out its new Plaxo Mobile Plus to Verizon Wireless customers, with more additional carriers like Alltel and U.S. Cellular schedules to come online by the end of the year. The idea is that users will be able to synchronize their mobile phone’s contact list with their email address book, eliminating the need to manually re-enter contact data, or painstakingly re-create contact lists when switching to a new phone.

AllTel Offers XM Radio to Mobile Users

Mobile phone operators are increasingly trying to diversify their service offerings away from voce-only service to bring in more revenue, and today Alltel took an interesting step in that direction, announcing it will offer channels from XM satellite radio to its mobile phone users for $7.99 a month.

According to AllTel, users will be able to select between 20 commercial-free XM music channels, including “decades” channels for music from the 70s, 80s, and 90s, Top 20 hits, as well as channels featuring alternative rock, country, blues, Hip Hop, indie rock, and Latin pop. Users with compatible handsets will be able to select channels by genre, and view title, artist, and album information on their phones while listening.
