Altec Lansing iM414 Spreads Zune Love

Altec Lansing made its contribution to the market for third-party Zune accessories on Monday with the announcement of its inMotion 414 Zune dock. Much like docks for the more-popular iPod, Altec’s Zune dock allows users to drop in their players and crank up the tunes without headphones.

Shaped like an extruded L, the iM414 accepts a Zune directly into its base, with a neodymium-driven speaker to either side of it. A small display on its face shows the time or lets users scroll through their favorite radio stations with the built-in FM tuner. It can be powered by either AC power or 3AA batteries, which Altec claims should offer 24 hours of play time. A full-function remote allows control of all of its functions from afar.

Altec Lansing Offers Wireless Home Theater

Altec Lansing Offers Wireless Home Theater

Although Altec Lansing is best known today for its ubiquitous line of PC speakers, the company started out making home theater speakers, and still maintains a portfolio of higher-end offerings. It added onto that line Thursday with the announcement of the Powered Theater Series, a wireless surround sound system for flat panel TVs.

The PT8051 system features only a front speaker and a rear speaker, but delivers five separate audio channels like a traditional setup. The units accomplish this with NXT Digital drivers, which use a 8” by 1.5” flat radiating surface that Altec claims covers more room area than traditional cone speakers. If two separate units is still too much bulk, the PT7031 packs five-channel surround into just one box using the same drivers.

Altec Lansing Ships New 2.1 Speaker Set

Altec Lansing today put out details on a newly released speaker set for PC users. The new VS2321 is priced at $49.95 and available now.

The VS2321, said Altec Lansing, is the successor to the company’s top selling system in this category. The set consists of three pieces – two satellite speakers and a subwoofer. This 2.1 system sports a contemporary design which is geared towards complimenting today’s flat panel monitors and locates controls and jacks at the front of one of the satellites for easier access. These jacks include headphone and an auxiliary jack for connecting a music source such as an iPod.

CES 2006 Profile: Altec Lansing

Speaker manufacturer Altec Lansing brought several new interesting products to CES 2006 which they expect will bring another positive year to their bottom line. These new products are focused mainly on speaker systems for portable audio devices, with a headphone announcement thrown in as well for good measure.

Standing at the front of the line for Altec Lansing’s 2006 line up is the inMotion iM9 ($199.95). Made to be taken into the outdoors, this portable speaker system for dockable iPods is made with shock resistant, rubberized elements. Features include built-in splash resistance, a rugged backpack style carry bag, an advanced Class D amplifier with MaxxBass technology and a recharging option for your iPod.

Altec Lansing Launches inMotion iM5

Sized smaller than the Bose SoundDock, Altec Lansing is branding the iM5 as more of a portable solution. The iM5 can run off of either battery or AC power and comes with a carrying bag that allows you to take the unit on the road with you. The iM5 also has a shock-resistant frame that is supposed to withstand bumps for on-the-go use.   According to Altec Lansing, the iM5 features four full-range micro drivers powered by an efficient Class D amplifier that is supposed to give off a full-bodied sound and rich bass.   Other features include video connectivity for your iPod photo that lets you show off your pictures on a television by directly connecting the iM5. The inMotion iM5 Mobile Audio Dock is available now at retailers and www.alteclansing.com  and will have an MSRP of $149.95.

As part of its growing line of inMotion portable audio products, Altec Lansing today announced two new earphones which they say provides high-definition sound. The inMotion iM616 ($149.95) and iM716 ($199.95) are expected to be available later this month.   Both headphones, Altec Lansing said, are both in-ear listening system which combine the company’s audio reproduction background with Etymotic Research technology which provides 35db of noise isolation. The inMotion iM616 features enhanced bass, while the inMotion iM716 features that as well as high definition audio modes, enabling users to choose one or the other with an in-line controller located on the cable.   Both units weigh less than an ounce and come with multiple ear tips to best fit the user’s ear for comfort.   "We launched our inMotion brand of portable audio speakers in 2003 and quickly captured 80% market share. These new earphones extend our portable franchise into the wearable audio arena, and they address the same demand for upscale personal audio as our mobile docks for the iPod and other consumer electronics," said Robert Heiblim, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Altec Lansing.

Plantronics Acquires Altec Lansing

Altec Lansing is calling it quits as a stand alone company. The maker of portable and powered audio systems today announced in a joint press release today that they were being acquired by headset manufacturer Plantronics in a $166 million deal.

Once the acquisition is complete, Altec Lansing will become a wholly-owned subsidiary of Plantronics. They will remain headquartered in Milford, Pennsylvania. Bob Garthwaite, who has served as senior vice president of marketing and sales for Altec Lansing, will become president and CEO of Altec Lansing after closing of the agreement.

iM7 Adds Big Sound to Your iPod

Compatible with the Apple iPod, iPod mini and iPod Photo, the new Altec Lansing inMotion iM7 Portable Speaker System reminds us of the older Bazooka Tube subwoofers that car audio retailers sell. That’s not a bad thing though, because the iM7 looks pretty powerful. Packed into the iM7 are two 1″ tweeters, two 3″ mid-range drivers, a 4″ side-firing subwoofer and a 4″ passive radiator. More power than most home mini-systems.
