Sony Intros iPod Clock Radio and Boombox

Sony has apparently stopped worrying that producing peipherals and accessory’s for Apple’s ubiquitous iPod portable media players will cannibalize sales of its own portable digital media products—instead, the company seems to be happy selling iPod-enabled products, today taking the wraps off new boombox and clock radio units aimed at the already-crowded iPod add-on market.

"Consumers are treating the iPod as a format, like the compact disc, which is why Sony is now delivering audio products to support it," said Andrew Sivori, director of personal audio products in the Digital Imaging and Audio Division at Sony Electronics, in a release. "High-quality sound, unique features, and exceptional design set our new boombox and clock radio apart."

New Sony In-Car CD Receiver Stores MP3s

Sony today introduced a new AM/FM CD/MP3 receiver capable of storing up to 500 songs in its flash memory. The Xplod MEX-1GP (Giga Panel) model is priced at around $350 and will be available in February.

The MEX-1GP CD receiver, said Sony, has 1GB of flash memory and a USB port built into the faceplate. When the removable faceplate is connected to a Windows based PC, users can transfer MP3 and WMA music files to it.

Other features of the MEX-1GP include playback of CD-R/RW discs, a high gloss black finish, a 13 segment LCD display for navigation of track and title information, a supplied remote control, a built-in 208 watt power amplifier and a three band equalizer.

Sony Unveils New Xplod In-Dash CD Receivers

Sony today added two new in-dash CD receivers to their line of Xplod car audio products. The CDX-GT100, priced at $99.99, and the $129.99 CDX-GT200 should both be available shortly.

Both in-dash CD receivers feature an auxiliary input on the detachable faceplate which allows them to connect to any portable audio device, such as a MP3 player, which uses a standard 1/8

Sony Electronics Shows Off Pimped Garage

Sony Electronics last night showed off every techie’s dream garage as they invited folks to their San Diego digs to check out the revamped Mobile Electronics Technology Center. This new 2,700 square foot facility is part of their corporate headquarters campus.

The METC, according to a Sony Electronics press release, is the company’s installation facility used to test Sony’s in-car entertainment products, conduct installations for Sony’s tripped out custom rides and support its dealers. It contains two installation bays and two lifts that allow storage of four vehicles, among other garage like features.
