Major Microsoft Announcement on the Way

Major Microsoft Announcement on the Way

In a surprise move on Thursday, Microsoft sent out word to the press to prepare for a “significant” morning announcement via teleconference. Although the release did not include details on what the surprise announcement would address, it did rule out the possibility that it would be related to Microsoft’s recent failed bid to acquire Yahoo.

Attendees will include Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, chief software architect Ray Ozzie, senior vice president of the server and tools business Bob Muglia, and the company’s general counsel for legal and corporate affairs, Brad Smith.

A Bad Year For British Data

A Bad Year For British Data2007 hasn’t been a good year for British data. In the last two months there has been announcement after announcement of lost data, some of which could be gold if it ends up in the hands ofcriminals.   The latest breach, reported the week before Christmas, was the nine separate health trusts run by the National Health Service (NHS) has managed tolose the data of patients (although one later found the records).   That came after a government announcement the week before that a US contractor had managed to lose the data of three millionlearner drivers. There was no reason given for using a US contractor.   Prior to that was the biggie, when Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC)lost the data of 25 million UK residents – a figure that represents nearly half the population. That data has yet to be found, although so far there has been no evidence it was stolen.  The government has come under fire for the breaches, and the head of HMRC resigned after the incident. No other heads have rolled – yet. But the National AuditOffice has criticized the data systems, saying 35% of them need strengthening.

China Shuts Down 1,600 Internet Cafes

“The announcement came amid a campaign launched in March to reduce or eliminate sex and violence in Web sites, video games and other material that Communist leaders consider harmful to public morality.

Investigators have inspected 1.8 million Internet cafes looking for unlicensed operations or those that let children play violent games meant for adults, the Ministry of Culture said.”

It is nice to see someone try to take a stance towards violent video games. But what do you think your children were doing at these places mom? Studying for school?

DOOM 3 Gets August Release Date

The announcement is similar in style and prominence to the recent announcement of ESPN NFL 2K5’s $19.99 price point, which also happened to beat the publisher’s official announcement to release.

Activision, however, adamantly states that id Software’s long-anticipated first-person shooter will simply be available “when it’s done.” The publisher has of course been burnt a few times before by releasing tentative release dates for the game — its E3 2003 promotional materials promised a release within the year, while a subsequent financial report claimed it would hit shelves some time in this recent spring.

Sony Japan Temporarily Halts DSC-T11 Sales

Quote from the imaging resource:

“The story comes to us from good friend Yamada Kumio of the digitalcamera.jp website. Yamada-san links to a Sony announcement (available in Japanese only) detailing the reason for the announcement, which will see the camera shipping once more at the end of the month. According to the Sony announcement, initial users have reported problems with the finish of the camera flaking off when the camera is bumped or scraped against a hard object.”

Intel Unveils 64-Bit Processor Features

The most widely discussed announcement by Intel at a technology conference it sponsored was the company’s plan to boost the data-crunching power of lower-end business computers and, eventually, home computers by introducing so-called 64-bit technology for processors for those machines.
