Apple To Cut Computer Prices?

Apple To Cut Computer Prices?

According to the site Apple Insider, “extremely reliable” sources are saying that Apple is considering price cuts on its desktop machines and on the 13” MacBook.

It might prove to be a good time for the move, with sales slowing on Macs, and the company laying off staff in its retail outlets.

Apple’s pricing has always been on the high side, and that’s recently made it a target for competition, such as Microsoft, in ads.

Those who do go Apple, however, tend to become brand evangelists. The company has scored highly on customer satisfaction for its computers, as well as for the iPhone.

Apple Settlement Shutters Think Secret

Back in 2005, one particular action by Apple—then called Apple Computer—set the blogosphere and the online journalism community into a snit-fit: the famously secretive company sued three online sites—O’Grady’s PowerPage,Apple Insider, and Think Secret—for publishing stolen trade secrets related to an unreleased audio interface codenamed “Asteroid.”

Apple sued the three sites (and their ISPs) in an effort to get information on who leaked insider information to the sites. Apple won the suits, but the non-profit Electronic Frontier Foundation defended the sites on appeal, arguing they were entitled to the same protection afforded to journalists’s sources under so-called “shield laws.”

Apple Sued Over ‘Tiger’ Name

“Tiger Direct, which sells computers and related products on the Internet, said Apple’s Tiger OS threatens to dilute its trademarked name, according to Bloomberg, which has obtained a copy of the lawsuit.

The online retailer also accused Apple of deceptive and unfair trade practices in the lawsuit, filed today in federal court in Miami, Florida, Bloomberg said.

“Apple Computer has created and launched a nationwide media blitz led by Steven Jobs, overwhelming the computer world with a sea of Tiger references,” Tiger Direct’s attorneys wrote in the lawsuit.”

Verizon, Sprint Pass on iTunes Phone

“According to an international cover story in the April 25th edition of Business Week, the cell phone carriers, along with Cingular/ATT, have very different perspectives on how digital music stores should work and are expected to charge between $2 and $3 for wireless music downloads when they introduce their services.

“They figure they can charge a premium for the convenience of getting songs anytime, even though customers most likely won’t be able to listen to those songs anywhere but on their phones, at least initially,” wrote Business Week’s Roger Crockett. He cites a source close to Apple who says wireless operators are “simply being unrealistic” if they expect customers to pay $2 or $3 for a song, especially with restrictions.”

Apple Could Be Developing Two Button Mouse

“According to sources who have so far filed accurate reports on Apple’s future hardware plans, the company is feverishly working on a two-button wireless optical mouse that it intends to release.

Apple enthusiasts have longed for an Apple-branded two-button mouse for over a decade, but their requests have gone unanswered. So what has changed? According to sources, ‘it’s the company.”"

Apple Wins Suit Against Fan Sites

“Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge James Kleinberg refused to extend to the Web sites a protection that shields journalists from revealing the names of unidentified sources or turning over unpublished material.

The case raises issues about whether those who write for online publications are entitled to the same constitutional protections as their counterparts in more traditional print and broadcast news organizations.”

The three sites which Apple went after include PowerPage  and Apple Insider. The company filed a separate suit against Think Secret on Jan. 4.

This outcome should raise flags in the blogging community since many of these publications rely on company trade secrets and rumors.

Apple Could Add Bluetooth To iPod

“In an interview with Radio France, Nedelcou let it slip that consumers will soon be able to broadcast music wirelessly from their iPod through their car speakers. Similarly, he said that users will be able to answer incoming phone calls without having to operate their mobile phone handset.

Both tips apparently reference an upcoming device for automobiles, which will include a dock or ‘pod’ that will allow both an iPod with Bluetooth and a mobile phone device to communicate with car stereos. It’s unclear if the device is Apple or Motorola-based. “

Could Sony And Apple Be Future Partners?

“Why did Steve Jobs say that Apple and Sony could possibly work together on computers and music? We think Apple could introduce products based on the IBM/Sony/Toshiba Cell processor,” the analyst said.

“Merrill Lynch believes that an Apple/Sony partnership could form around an iTunes-like iMovies store online using the H.264 codec and streaming Sony and Pixar content; a high-performance Apple workstation using Cell for video editing; or a network-centric TV with computing for handling the next-generation of entertainment feeds.”

Target Pulls Mac mini From Online Store

Apple Insider is reporting that while Target is citing availability concerns, but there may be more going on. A 10% off coupon is apparently floating around the net allowing customers to purchase the Mac mini at below Target’s assumed cost. Of course this is only speculation.

Target had the following to say to its customers:

“We appreciate your interest in purchasing the Mac Mini. We can’t offer a definite date when it will be on hand again, and because of this, we’re not able to make it available for ordering at this time,” the retailer said.

4th Generation iPod Video Rumors

According to the source, who has reportedly toyed with a 4th generation prototype, the player may not sport a video output jack per say, but rather a greatly advanced dock connector. The feature is said to greatly utilize a much improved “Home on iPod” Mac OS X software technology, which is still under development by the iPod maker.

“It works a bit like the … voice recording feature,” the source said. “When a user connects one end of the video-cable into the iPod’s new dock connector and the other end into the TV, it will switch the iPod into video mode.”
