Russia’s largest mobile phone operator MTS has announced it will offer the Apple iPhone for sale—although it offered no other details. The announcement means Russia’s three largest mobile operators—Vimpelcom, MegaFon and now MTS—all have agreements with Apple to sell the iPhone. Presumably, all three operators will be offering the iPhone 3G, although details and pricing information haven’t been announced. Sales are expected to get underway before the end of the year, and the operators aren’t expected to be subsidizing the cost of the handsets.

iPhone, iPhone, Wherefore Art Thou, iPhone?
Last week, analysts Tony Sacconagui at Bernstein Research looked at quarterly financial numbers from Apple and AT&T, looked again, and did a little bit of head-scratching. Apple claims to have sold 3.7 million iPhones to date, but AT&T claimed to have activated only 2 million iPhones. Although the figures don’t account for some inaccuracies and iPhones that had been purchased over the end-of-year holidays but not yet activated, the figures seemed to indicate that at whopping 1.4 million of the iPhone sold to date are either sitting in inventory, being used in a phone-free “iPod touch” mode until buyer’s wireless contracts expired…or that purchasers have deliberately unlocked the iPhones to re-sell or for use on networks other than AT&T.
Vodafone Sues to Block German iPhone Sales
European mobile operator Vodafone has been granted a preliminary injunction by a German court in Hamburg against the sale of Apple iPhones by rival T-Mobile. Vodafone alleges that the sale of an unsubsidized handset locked to T-Mobile service with a two-year contract violates German competition laws. However, the injunction does not actually stop T-Mobile from selling the iPhone, and T-Mobile is continuing to do so. Vodafone says the goal of the court action is not to stop German sales of the iPhone, but to make sure the terms under which it is sold are legal.
Project iChimp Will Donate iPods to Chimps
Before you consider donating to charities that support the less fortunate, clothing maker Nemesys wants you to think of the chimpanzees. Through the company’s bizarre new Project iChimp, it claims it will donate 8GB Apple iPhones and 8GB iPod Touches to “chimpanzees in need” around the United States using funds from the sale of its new 2007 Beginnings clothing collection.
“There are many firms in the world which aid people in need, but there are few firms looking to help technologically impaired chimpanzees,” said Nemesys Clothing CEO Umair Hussain, in a statement. “We believe that chimpanzees should have the opportunity to be able to swing from trees while watching fellow chimps do the same thing on YouTube.”
