Apple Launches DRM-Free iTunes Plus

Apple today launched iTunes Plus, a new addition to its existing iTunes service which offers AAC music tracks from major label EMI at 256 Kbps encoding (twice the rate of standard iTunes purchases) at $1.29 per track—and without Apple’s FairPlay digital rights management (DRM) technology. That means users can play iTunes Plus tracks on any music player (or using any application) which supports AAC encoding, rather than the tracks being restricted to playback using iTunes or Apple iPods.

“This is a tremendous milestone for digital music,” said Eric Nicoli, CEO of EMI Group. “Consumers are going to love listening to higher quality iTunes Plus tracks from their favorite EMI artists with no usage restrictions.”

Online Shopping Surges During Holidays

Every year, more consumers opt for the convenience of online shopping during the holiday season, and there’s no denying the appeal: finding and selecting products from the comfort of your living room or a coffee shop (or, ahem workplace) and having those items gift wrapped, shipped, and guaranteed to arrive in time for the holidays for a not-always-small fee. No lines, no crowds, no rain, no snow, no fuss. Although online shopping isn’t perfect for all gift ideas—such as items which need to be hand-selected with care, or selections made too late to be shipped on time—there’s no denying the appeal, especially for mass-produced, readily available goods.

Motorola Tests Phone Vending Machines

You probably laughed a few years ago when you first heard about vending machines in airports selling things like Apple iPods. "Yeah," you thought. "Lotta good that probably does them on their next flight; an empty iPod, probably with a dead battery!"

Motorola apparently thinks the idea has some merit, though, announcing a pilot program of “robotic retail stores” to provide on-demand mobile phones and accessories.

“Continuing our effort to reinvent mobile retail culture and transform the consumer experience, this on-demand retail solution is an interesting approach to the many extensions of our retail strategy,” said Jason Few, Corporate Vice President, Global Retail, Motorola. “This pilot program is an opportunity to bring never-seen-before convenience to consumers who are looking for ways to make life easier.”

France’s Toned-Down iTunes Law Draws Ire

French lawmakers have given final approval to a proposed copyright law which could force Apple Computer and other digital media distributors to make their services interoperable with devices and technology from other developers and manufacturers. The vote was the last legislative procedure before the bill would become law, although a constitutional challenge against it was filed last week by France’s opposition Socialist party.

Although the current version of the legislation is significantly toned down from earlier versions put before the French Parliament months ago, the move is still drawing strong fire from technology groups, claiming the law will stifle innovation and possibly lead to major media distributors withdrawing from the French market altogether. Apple Computer famously described the original version of the legislation as “state-sponsored piracy.”

How to Record and Play Music from a DVD

Say you’re having a party and you want to have enough music ready for the whole night. Sure, you might have an iPod or digital audio player that you could hook to your stereo, but do you really want all of your friends’ grubby hands all over it? If you have a DVD player and a DVD burner in your computer there’s a simple solution – create an Audio DVD.

HP Gets Groovy with Apple’s iPod shuffle

HP has expanded its rebranding of Apple’s popular iPod digital music players by adding the iPod shuffle to its lineup. The iPod shuffle is a USB flash-based music player which can play back MP3, WAV, and Apple’s proprietary AAC audio format as well as audio books from Audible.com. (Like other iPods, the iPod shuffle does not support Windows Media or Real Media formats). The unit also offers its now-famous “shuffle mode” which randomly selects tracks for playback, and is managed using Apple’s iTunes jukebox software, which is available for Mac OS X as well as Windows 2000 and XP, and which also provides access to Apple’s iTunes Music Store, still the dominant player in digital music sales. The device also doubles as a USB flash drive for storing documents or other files, and boasts 12 hours of playback on a single charge.

HP Refreshes Product Lines

“HP is expanding its desktop PC family with two new Pavilion desktop series, the d4000 and a1000, as well as the HP Media Center m7000 Series Photosmart PC. Customizable features include a Personal Media Drive with up to 400GB of storage, and a removable docking station for HP’s R-series digital cameras and Apple iPods from HP. The new PCs will also come with Norton Internet Security 2005 and Intermute’s SpySubtract Pro pre-installed with free updates for two months.

Pre-configured desktop systems will be available later this month, with custom configurations available in May. Pricing starts at $379 direct, after rebates.”

SendStation Releases Two New PocketDocks

The original PocketDock is a tiny adapter for the iPod’s proprietary Dock connector. By carrying a PocketDock, users can connect their iPods with industry-standard FireWire cables instead of thespecial Apple docking cable.

The new PocketDock Combo, announced today, offers USB and FireWire ports in a package hardly larger than the original PocketDock. It accepts industry-standard USB cables and 6-pin FireWire cables, allowing the user to connect to Macintosh and Windows systems at will using one convenient adapter.

Sony Announces New Music Service

The company says that the new service has been named “Connect” and will offer “a large catalogue of more than 300,000 songs, including albums and singlesfrom both major and independent record labels.”

There may be more audio format wars ahead, however. Sony says that audio tracks on the new service will be available in the ATRAC3 format, originally implemented in the company’s own MiniDisc and portable digital players. As a result, Connect songs will not be compatible with Apple iPods, downloading exclusively to “a wide range of Sony portable devices,” including the Hi-MD Walkman, Net MD Walkman, Network Walkman, and ATRAC CD Walkman. Sony claims that there are now more than two million portable Sony devices in Europe that will be compatible with the new service.
