CES 2008 Sneak Peak

We are in the final countdown to this year’s Consumer Electronics Show, one of the largest trade shows in the world. Here are a few products that look to be hot at the show. We will be writing more about them as they are announced next week.

Automotive Electronics

This is where you go to see really crazy stuff. Traditionally in this part of the show they have cars that are rolling showcases of audio and video technology. In past years I’ve seen 4×4s with flat panel displays on the axils and in the wheels, cars where the engines have been removed and replaced with amplifiers, and things that looked like they once were cars but now look like some sort of mutated Transformer. While there are some truly hot cars in this part of the show, 0-60 performance isn’t what they are showcasing.

Axiotron Ships ModBook Tablet Mac

Axiotron Ships ModBook Tablet Mac

Mac fans, your tablet notebook has finally arrived. After whetting appetites at last year’s Macworld with the ModBook, Axiotron announced this week, nearly a year later, that it will begin shipping.

The ModBook is based on an ordinary Apple MacBook, but with a new shell and an input system that has been reworked from the ground up. Axiotron worked with WACOM to develop the system’s pen digitizer, which can detect 512 separate pressure levels, updates its position 133 times per second, and is 20 times more accurate than the display resolution. A etched-acid glass surface combined with the nib of the stylus is also supposed to provide a paper-like writing sensation.

IDF: Intel?s View of the Future for Windows, Linux, & Apple Users

The interesting thing about the IDF (Intel’s Developer Forum) is that it exists 2 years in the future.

The reason for this is that it is focused on software and hardware developers who need long lead times to create new hardware and get them to market on top of the new technology that Intel is developing.   Virtually all of Intel’s partners are here… but finding the Apple guys is a challenge, because of how secretive they are with regard to what portions of the Intel platform they will use in 2 years.

Online Shopping Surges During Holidays

Every year, more consumers opt for the convenience of online shopping during the holiday season, and there’s no denying the appeal: finding and selecting products from the comfort of your living room or a coffee shop (or, ahem workplace) and having those items gift wrapped, shipped, and guaranteed to arrive in time for the holidays for a not-always-small fee. No lines, no crowds, no rain, no snow, no fuss. Although online shopping isn’t perfect for all gift ideas—such as items which need to be hand-selected with care, or selections made too late to be shipped on time—there’s no denying the appeal, especially for mass-produced, readily available goods.

OWC Offers MacBook Memory Upgrades

Other World Computing, a Mac tech specialist, earlier this week announced new memory upgrade kits for Apple’s new MacBook and MacBook Pro models. Prices for these kits start at $99 and they look to be available now.

1GB and 2GB memory upgrade kits, said OWC, will allow Apple MacBook and MacBook Pro owners the ability to have enough memory to fully use the computers’ Intel Dual-Core processors. The kits are reportedly easy to install to the Macs’ user-upgradeable memory slots and Apple allows for user installation of these MacBook memory upgrades without warranty violation and instructions are provided in every MacBook and MacBook Pro user manual.
