Apple Patches iTunes, QuickTime

Apple has issued patches to fix security problems in both QuickTime and iTunes, the iTunes 8.2 and QuickTime 7.6.2 updates, which take care of vulnerabilities in Mac (MacOS X 10.4 and 10.5) and Windows (XP and Vista) versions of the software.

The QuickTime fix takes care of at total of 10 vulnerabilities, all of which could let a hacker remotely execute code on an infected system. Eight of the problems affect both Mac and Windows versions, while two are just for Windows.

By contrast, iTunes just has one vulnerability that affects both Windows and Mac versions.

iPhone SDK Looks to Keep Programmers

Although not everybody with an iPhone wants to jailbreak the device and explore the wild and wooly world of iPhone applications not sanctioned by Applem, the Cupertino company is apparently taking a dim view of developers who want to create programs and applications and distribute them in some way besides the officially sanction iTunes App Store. The latest version of the iPhone software development kit (SDK) forbids developers from distributing their programs in any way except via ad hoc distribution of via the App Store—which, of course, famously only offers programs that have met Apple’s still-unstated criteria for distribution.

Psystar Claims $399 Mac Clone

Florida company Psystar claims to be selling OpenMac, a Macintosh clone built using off-the-shelf PC parts and shipping with Apple’s Mac OS X 10.5 “Leopard” operating system. Prices start at just $399 for a PC with a 2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, a 250 GB hard drive, 2 GB of RAM, a DVD±R optical drive, and 4 USB ports. For additional money, Psystar says users can get FireWire connectivity and an Nvidia GeFore 8600 GT graphics card…and Leopard pre-installed.

Apple Draws Ire Pushing Safari to Windows

Apple has been shipping its own Web browser Safari with Mac OS X for several years now, and announced a version Safari for Windows a year ago. Safari represents a healthy share of the Macintosh browser market, but in terms of the overall Internet Safari is still in the single digits in terms of browser share. So no one was truly surprised that Apple would attempt to leverage the near ubiquity of its QuickTime and iTunes software as a way to introduce Windows users to other Apple applications: what surprises people is that Apple is using the updating capability to push new applications to those users by default.
