Archos 2 16GB Review

Summary

The diminutive and inexpensive Archos 2 16GB music player comes to the U.S. at a price that puts the screen-less Apple iPod Shuffle 3G to shame. The Archos 2 features 16 GB of built-in storage, plus sports a microSD/microSDHS card slot for additional storage. The unit supports MP3 and WMA music, but sadly not AAC tunes, such as might be purchased from the iTunes store. The unit can display JPEG photos, can display text and lyrics (.lrc) files, and sports a voice recorder for taking notes and memos. The device transfers tunes and charges via USB 2.0, and can handle up to 10 hours of music playback on a single charge.

Archos 2 MP3 Player Finally Coming to U.S.

Archos 2 MP3 Player Finally Coming to U.S.

Although it’s been available in other markets for a while, media player maker Archos is finally bringing its diminutive Archos 2 digital music player to the United States market. And when we say “diminutive” we don’t mean so-small-you-could-lose-it like the Apple iPod shuffle, but we do mean the unit maked to be sleek and portable without doing away with a display to help users manage their songs and playlists. And did we mention that it offers two to four times the storage capacity as the iPod shuffle? At similar prices? Plus a voice recorder?

Choosing a Subwoofer

Imagine Die Hard without explosions, Bond without the bullets, or The Matrix without kung-fu. Translation: Speakers are nice. However, if you’re serious about sound, you may want to include a subwoofer in your home setup.

To put it simply, the subwoofer is the heart of the system when it comes to low-frequency sounds. While the sub may not look as cool as the other speakers in your home theater readout (although certain models can!), this is the unit that can put you in the middle of the concert or the action, all from your living room couch. It makes music and movies (especially action scenes) seem that much more arresting and lifelike.

Archos Lays Out Netbook Plans

Archos Lays Out Netbook Plans

Archos might be best-known for its line of well-specced media players, but the company is not standing idly by while the computing industry sinks its teeth into netbooks. Earlier this year, Archos introduced the Archos 10, a slim Atom-powered netbook. Today, the company not only took the wraps off its followup, the Archos 10s, but announced (PDF) it plans to roll out a 9-inch MiniPC Tablet in 2010 based on Intel’s forthcoming “Moorestown” platform.

Blockbuster, Sonic Team on Internet Movies

Blockbuster, Sonic Team on Internet Movies

Video rental outfit Blockbuster is looking to amp up its competition with upstart rival Netflix, announcing today it is partnering with Sonic Solutions (now part of CinemaNow) to provide Internet-based, streaming access to movies and other video content to computers, mobile devices, set-top boxes, and Web-connected TVs. Financial terms of the arrangement were not disclosed, but the companies say this is a multi-year, preferred-provider arrangement. Under the deal, Blockbuster will supply the “branded consumer interfaces” while Sonic will power the back end and content delivery.
