Nokia N810 Internet Tablet Gets WiMax

Nokia N810 Internet Tablet Gets WiMax

Finland’s Nokia has taken the wraps off its Nokia N810 Internet Tablet WiMax Edition, the company’s first device to integrate high-speed, wide-area WiMax connectivity. Although WiMax isn’t widely available in the United States, mobile operator Sprint is building out its Xohm network, with high-speed service already deployed in Chicago and the Washington D.C./Baltimore area. Nokia plans to make the WiMax-enabled edition of its N810 available in the United States in June, potentially getting a jump on a WiMax-enabled market as Sprint builds out its network.

Nokia N800 Gets Skype

Nokia has announced that is has launched Skype VoIP calling on its N800 Internet Tablet, enabling users to place VoIP calls anywhere in the world they can access the Internet via Wi-Fi. And, of course, Skype users can access their Skype address books, and even place video calls using the service.

“Skype is the recognized leader in internet calling, with more than 196 million registered users worldwide,” said Ari Virtanen, Nokia’s VP of Convergence Products, in a statement. “The Nokia N800 gives people easy access to the Internet and it’s a natural step that they will want to make Skype calls away from their desktop.”

Nokia Debuts New Internet Tablet, Camcorder

It might not be Apple’s new iPhone, but Nokia wants people to know its been in the mobile Internet game for a long while now, and it actually has products available now, as opposed to maybe coming down the line in six months. Nokia’s new N800 Internet tablet, being shown off this week at the CES show in Las Vegas, is an update to its earlier N770 mobile surfing device. The idea behind the Internet Tablet is to let users keep up with their news, email, instant messaging, and Web services while also serving as a personal entertainment device with music and video. And although the N800 does support VoIP calling, the device is not, itself, a phone. Instead, it connects to the Internet using Wi-Fi or via a separate Bluetooth-capable phone that can talk to mobile data services.

Intel introduces new Pentium M processor

Intel Corporation  introduced the Intel Pentium M processor for communications applications, providing an optimal combination of higher compute performance, power management and overall lowerpower for use in ultra-dense modular communications equipment. The architectural features in the processor are well suited for communications, helping to speed the processing and routing of datawithin modular, high density networking equipment. As the convergence of communications and computing continues, future Intel architecture processors are expected to increasingly include featuresthat benefit networking equipment as well as PCs and servers.

Today’s announcement is part of a broader effort by Intel to bring the benefits of modular components to the networking market segment. High performance and widely available hardware and software components, including a range of Intel chips and a rich set of software development tools and re-useable application code, can help equipment manufacturers reduce development costs, speed time-to-market and enable new services.
