California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and state attorney general Jerry Brown have announced they have asked the U.S. Supreme Court to review a decision that overturned a California law barring the sale or rental of violent video games to minors. The law was passed in 2005 over concerns that violent content in video games could lead to increased violence among game-playing youth, incite aggressive behavior, or do long-term psychological harm. The law received strong support Governor Schwarzenegger, but was quickly challenged by trade groups like the Entertainment Software Association, and a preliminary injunction was issued preventing the law from going into effect. In August 2007, Federal Judge Roland Whyte issued a permanent ban on the law, who found there was not sufficient evidence that violent content in games led to real-world violence, and thus the state did not have a compelling need to restrict the free speech of game developers and publishers.

Survey Finds Young Germans Would Rather Ditch Cars or Spouses Than the Internet
The results of a new survey conducted by German market analysis firm Bitkom might not surprise folks who’ve grown up in the Intenret age, but may surprise people who still remember licking stamps or tuning into short wave radio broadcasts. Bitkom finds that young Germans would sooner do without their cars or their partners than live without the Internet. Bitkom interviewed 1,000 Germans about their attitudes towards the Internet and technology (German), and found that a whopping 84 percent of respondents between the ages of 19 and 29 would give up their wheels or their partner rather than the Internet; similarly, some 97 percent of respondents age 19 to 29 said living without a mobile phone was simply unthinkable.
Hands Free Only In Cali
If you’re going to California or the holiday weekend, or if you live there, better be careful with your cell phone. Today’s the day a new state law comes into effect, making it illegal to use your phone while driving unless it’s equipped with a hands-free device. Break that law and it’s $20 for the first offence and $50 for the second time.
The California Highway Patrol will be aggressively enforcing the law over the holiday weekend, and governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has announced:
Judge Blocks California Violent Games Law
In a 17-page ruling, federal judge Ronald Whyte has issued a permanent order blocking a California law which would have required labels on violent video games and prohibited their sale or rental to minors. The statute was passed in 2005, with strong support from California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, over concerns that violent content in video games would lead to increased violence among youth, spark aggressive behavior, or inflict psychological harm.
Suit Filed Against CA Violent Game Ban
The Entertainment Software Association and the Video Software Dealers Association, two video game trade groups, are suing the state of California in an effort to overturn a new law banning the sale of violent video games to minors.
The law, signed by California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger a little over a week ago, bans the sake or rental of violent video games to minors under the age of 17, and required retailers label violent games. Factors the law uses to determine whether the content of a game is violent include “infliction of gratuitous violence upon the victim beyond that necessary to commit the killing, needless mutilation of the victim’s body, and the helplessness of the victim.” Violators would be subject to a $1,000 fine.
